Court jails fisherman 12 months for stealing mobile phone

The Accra Circuit Court ‘10’, presided over by Patricia Amponsah, has jailed Joshua Kortey, aged 22 years and a fisherman, to a total of 36 months for causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.

Kortey was sentenced by the court after pleading guilty simplicita to the charges. The court sentenced the accused to 12 months on each count, but the jail terms are to run concurrently.

The court considered the accused person’s remorsefulness, his age, a first time offender, and also that he did not waste the court’s time to hand down the sentence.

Chief Inspector John Gohoho, prosecuting the case, said the complainant in the case was a youth worker and lived at Teshie Tsuibleoo, whilst Joshua Kortey was a fisherman and a resident of Teshie Maami.

According to him, on August 29, 2021, at about 1.00am, the convict went to the complainant’s place of abode and caused damage to his mosquitoes netting, passed his hand through it to open the back door, which had a key in the lock to give him access to the bedroom.

He said the accused then stole the complainant’s Samsung Galaxy X21 ultra, value at $2,000, cash of GH¢1000, a purse containing assorted ID cards, sneaked out from the room, and took to his heels.

Unfortunately, the prosecuting officer added, a witness in the case saw Kortey and reported the incident to the police and he was arrested.

C/Insp Gohoho told the court that Kortey admitted the offence in his cautioned statement, and mentioned one Sheriff as the one he gave the phone to.

He said the police was able to trace the said Sheriff to his house, but he was nowhere to be found, but was able to retrieve the phone.
