The Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its weight behind Awentami Paul Afoko, expressing confidence in his ability to help reposition the party, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
At a high-level meeting in Kumasi, the Elders described Mr. Afoko as a well-known figure within the party whose previous role in its reorganisation contributed significantly to its growth. According to them, his strategic approach and organisational skills once helped to strengthen the NPP’s electoral performance.
Amid concerns over dwindling support in the five northern regions, the Council appealed to Mr. Afoko to step forward and work closely with the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to rebuild and expand the party’s base.
“We have experienced your leadership and we know what you are capable of doing.The challenge ahead is to help win back the northern regions when you assume the role of National Chairman bycollaborating with Dr. Bawumia to make a lasting impact on the party,” the elders said.
MrAfoko, who is currently consulting key party stakeholders across the country, ahead of a possible bid for the National Chairman position, expressed appreciation for the endorsement. He reiterated his commitment to the NPP, despite past internal difficulties.
Describing the Ashanti Region as the “heartbeat” of the party, he said he remained open to guidance from party elders and grassroots members alike.
I am concerned about the current state of the party, but this is not the time to trade blame over the 2024 defeat. We must all take responsibility.
The focus now should be on unity, drawing on our collective experience, and working together to return the NPP to power in 2028,” he stated.
He further urged party members at all levels to contribute ideas and support efforts to rebuild a stronger and more cohesive NPP.
