CJ deepens relationship with the media

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has promised to deepen the knowledge and understanding of court correspondents to improve upon their work.

Her Ladyship the Chief Justice Torkornoo, during her maiden engagement and induction of new members of the Judicial Press Corps (JPC) in Accra, on Tuesday, indicated that she would arrange with the Judicial Training School to organise training for the court correspondents.

Although a timeline was not given, Her Ladyship the Chief Justice said the training was necessary as it would deepen the understanding of the court reporters on the complexities of the judicial system.

Similarly, she said the media was essential in the dispensation of justice in the country, as through these various mediums, the public would get to know what is happening in the court, stressing “you (media) are all aware that you are very, very precious part of the pillars of society.”

Notwithstanding the important role of the media in society, she warned that it would be a nightmare of any leader to have a press corps that does not report exact content of what transpires in court.

The media was also urged not to use the pen to break the peace, as the nation enters into new general elections.

The public on the other hand was urged to appreciate the complexities in the legal system, in order not to blame judges when parties lost certain suits deemed to be good cases in court.

According to her, presenting the facts is just one leg of the legal journey, but other things that come to play are the law of transaction, the law of procedure and the law of evidence.

She noted that, a good case might simply be lost on technical grounds, because these requirements were not met.

Regardless, she added that the judiciary is where dispute ends, basically making the court the registry of the rights and obligations of the entire community.

She promised to improve upon public perception about the third arm of government through effective collaboration with the media.
