His Majesty, the Zug-Raan Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has expressed profound gratitude to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his exceptional mediation efforts aimed at resolving the long-standing Bawku conflict.

In a statement issued on behalf of the people of Kusaug, the Zug-Raan highlighted Otumfuo’s dedication over more than two years of dialogue between the Bawku Naba and the Nayiri, culminating in the submission of a comprehensive mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 16, 2025.
The Zug-Raan praised Otumfuo’s patience, fairness and perseverance, particularly noting that the Asantehene continued the mediation despite mourning the loss of key traditional leaders, including the Queen Mother of Asanteman and the Mamponghene.
“The acceptance and completion of this mediation process is a testament to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s extraordinary leadership and service, not only to Asanteman, but to Ghana as a whole,” the Zug-Raan said.
He further confirmed his acceptance of the mediation report in its entirety and pledged his full support for the implementation of its recommendations, emphasising his commitment to lasting peace, constitutional order and national cohesion.
The Zug-Raan also commended the Nayiri, His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, for participating in the mediation process and thanked both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President John Dramani Mahama for recognising Otumfuo’s leadership and supporting the peace initiative.
Appeal for Unity and Reconciliation
In light of the government’s acceptance of the mediation report, the Zug-Raan appealed to all citizens, ethnic communities in Bawku – and Kusaas and Mamprusis across Ghana – to embrace reconciliation and peace.
He called on the Nayiri to join him in advocating for harmony and urged all residents to commit to peaceful coexistence, ensuring that the violent conflicts of the past do not recur.
The Zug-Raan also lauded the government’s plans for socio-economic redevelopment in Bawku, including the creation of a GHS1billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund and pledged his support for initiatives aimed at the region’s social reintegration and development.
His Majesty reaffirmed his personal availability to continue dialogue with Otumfuo and government officials, stressing the importance of continuous engagement in building sustainable peace.
He called on civil society organizations, religious institutions, development partners, and all individuals of goodwill to support the reconciliation and peace-building process in Kusaug.
The Zug-Raan further expressed gratitude to the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, National House of Chiefs, Religious Groups, National Peace Council, Civil Society and Security Services for their steadfast support throughout the mediation process.
Concluding the statement, the Zug-Raan urged all parties to collaborate for unity, cohesion and reintegration of all residents in Bawku, stressing that peace, reconciliation and patriotism must guide future actions in the region.
