Statistics from the National Road Safety Authority in Ashanti region indicates that as many as 634 persons perished in road accidents in the region, from January to November this year.
Mr. Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Authority disclosed this to the media during a road safety sensitisation exercise, dubbed “Okwanso Dwoodwoo” on the Dadwen-Kwapia stretch of the Obuasi-Kumasi road.
The exercise was initiated and sponsored by AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, in partnership with over twenty groups including; The Church of Pentecost, National Ambulance Service, Vivo Energy Ghana, The Police, Fire Service, National Road Safety Authority and Road Safety Ghana.
Mr. Agyenim Boateng said this year’s fatality figure was on the high side, as compared to last year’s figure of 564 over the same period. He stated that human errors like over speeding are contributing factors to many accidents on the roads.
The Regional Manager was of the opinion that education and safety sensitization are key in bringing the rate of road accidents down.
Mr. Emmanuel Massey, Stakeholder and Land Management Superintendent of AngloGold said it was the policy of the company to help prevent accidents from occurring hence the road safety sensitization exercise.
The Obuasi Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Prophet David Kamkam Beditor, on his part, said the Church saw the need to save lives hence the collaboration with AGA to educate drivers on the need to prioritise safety when driving.
Shirley Tony Kum, Corporate Communications Manager, Vivo Energy Ghana, said it is the wish of her outfit that nobody died in road accident this festive season, hence her involvement in the “Okwanso Dwoodwoo” programme.
