Akrofuom Assembly distributes oil palm seedlings to farmers

The Akrofuom District Assembly has distributed 65,000 oil palm seedlings free of charge under the government’s Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme to farmers in the district.

The oil palm seedlings were received from the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) to be given to farmers in the district.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Maurice Jonas Woode, who did the distribution, said at a short ceremony that he was optimistic that the distribution of the seedlings would serve as an alternative to the youth in the district to move away from illegal mining activities.

He said the cultivation of oil palm plantation in the district was expected to help in the reclamation of degraded mined areas.

The DCE hoped the initiative would encourage the mobilisation of raw materials for the establishment of a factory in the locality, under the One District One Factory programme of the government.
