A 72-year-old man, identified as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, has been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of a couple at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, in the Greater Accra Region.
The suspect, who had been on the run following the killing of Irene Atuguba, 47, and her husband, George Atuguba, 57, was arrested at his hideout at Tikrom, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, said the arrest followed intelligence gathered on the suspect’s whereabouts.
According to the police, a team of officers proceeded to the hideout and apprehended him.
During the operation, the police retrieved a Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition from the suspect. The firearm and ammunition have since been retained as exhibits.
GH¢500,000 DEBT
Preliminary police investigations have suggested that the murders were allegedly linked to a financial dispute between the suspect and the deceased, George Atuguba.
The police said the suspect had allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from George Atuguba but failed to repay the money, with the dispute believed to have preceded the killings.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged debt and its connection to the deaths are expected to form part of the ongoing investigations.
SUSPECT IN CUSTODY
The arrest comes days after the Accra Regional Police Command issued a statement on October 30, 2026, announcing investigations into the murder of the couple at NTHC Estate, Sakumono.
The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting investigators with their inquiries, while the recovered firearm and ammunition remain in police custody as exhibits.
The police have not yet disclosed whether the suspect has been formally charged or provided further details about the circumstances of the killings.
