The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is set to kick off this weekend with traditional giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, and three newly promoted clubs facing different challenges in what promises to be a highly competitive campaign.
Eighteen clubs will battle for domestic supremacy as the new season begins, with several sides entering the campaign with new coaches, revamped squads and ambitions of either winning the title or securing their place in Ghana’s top flight.
Medeama
Medeama, who captured the league title last season, will be seeking to defend their crown under coach Tanko Ibrahim. The coach guided the Tarkwa-based side to the championship last season and has retained his position as the club looks to build on its success.
The champions have also strengthened their squad with the additions of Heart of Lions midfielder Etse Dogli, Nations FC attacker Emmanuel Annor, Hohoe United captain Usman Safianu, Dreams FC right-back Ebenezer Adade, Karela United defender Abdul Rahman Yaya and Eleven Wonders midfielder Emmanuel Boateng.
However, the defending champions’ start to the new campaign will be complicated by their continental commitments. The club is representing Ghana in the CAF Champions League, where it has been drawn against five-time African champions TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Medeama are scheduled to host Mazembe in the first leg of the preliminary-round tie at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa on September 6, 2026 meaning their domestic campaign will have to wait while their attention turns to Africa.
Asante Kotoko
While Medeama seek to balance domestic and continental football, Asante Kotoko enters the new season with one of the most closely watched changes in the league.
The Porcupine Warriors have appointed South African coach Eric Tinkler and have embarked on a major squad rebuild as they attempt to return to the summit of Ghanaian football.
Among Kotoko’s new recruits are goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, Emmanuel Mamah, Ivorian Koffi Marius Ange Bini, Burkinabe midfielder Abdoul Kader Tarnagda, Cameroonian midfielder Solomon Nsor Asaah, Moroccan goalkeeper Abdel Wadie Mourad, defender Umar Ali and DR Congo centre-back Aristote Tamuzi.
Tinkler has already set his sights on challenging for honours, but his biggest task will be turning the collection of new players into a cohesive team capable of maintaining consistency throughout a long league campaign.
Kotoko’s opening assignment will add another layer to the occasion as they travel to face newly promoted Debibi United, who will be making their first appearance in the Ghana Premier League.
Hearts of Oak
At Hearts of Oak, the emphasis is similarly on rebuilding. The Phobians have appointed Bosnian coach Nebojša Kapor and have recruited heavily as the club attempts to restore itself to the top of Ghanaian football. New arrivals include Abdul Aziz, Ebenezer Amoh, Rockson Kyeremeh, Manuel OseiDjan, Caleb Koranteng, Alex Banso, goalkeeper Vicente Anane, Ivorian forward Mamadou Kader Kourouma and experienced striker John Antwi.
Kapor’s first competitive test comes against Berekum Chelsea, giving the Accra giants an immediate opportunity to demonstrate whether their extensive recruitment can translate into results.
Aduana FC
Aduana FC will also begin the campaign with a new man in charge, with experienced coach Samuel Boadu taking over the Dormaa-based club. Aduana have strengthened their squad with several additions as they pursue domestic honours.
Elsewhere, Heart of Lions have appointed Turkish coach Kasım Gökyıldız, while Vision FC have turned to Montenegrin manager Predrag Jeredić. The appointments form part of a growing trend of Ghanaian clubs looking outside the country for technical leadership.
Newcomers
The campaign will also introduce three new clubs to the top flight – Debibi United, Port City FC and FC AshantiGold ‘04 following their promotion from the Division One League.
For the newcomers, survival will be the immediate objective, but their presence could also provide an opportunity for emerging players to establish themselves on the country’s biggest domestic stage.
Among the young players attracting attention in this season’s is Medeama midfielder Etse Dogli, Hearts of Oak attacker Alex Banso, FC Samartex’s Meshack Adjetey Sowah and AshantiGold’s William Addo, who finished as the 2025/26 Division One League’s leading scorer with 23 goals.
With established giants rebuilding, new coaches arriving, promoted clubs seeking survival and Medeama attempting to defend their crown while competing in Africa, the new Ghana Premier League season presents a number of unanswered questions.
Can Medeama retain their title? Can Tinkler restore Kotoko to championship-winning form? Will Kapor’s Hearts rebuild quickly enough to challenge? And can the newly promoted clubs survive their first season among Ghana’s elite?
The answers will begin to emerge when the league gets underway this weekend.
