The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has intensified his bid for the party’s national chairmanship, urging delegates to prioritise competence and grassroots strength over fluency in “the Queen’s English.”
Addressing regional executives of the party in the Western Region, the three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman framed the 2028 general election as a battle that demands tested leadership rather than educational titles of interested candidates.
“This election is not for the books, it is for those who are tried and tested as grassroots working men, people who are popular and ready to work tirelessly for victory.”
Chairman Wontumi argued that the NPP’s current political circumstances require a national chairman who embodies the party’s fighting spirit and is prepared to spearhead efforts to reclaim power in 2028 following its 2024 electoral defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Don’t judge me based on my certificate, but on my competency,” he stressed, insisting that leadership of the party must be entrusted to individuals who have demonstrated political acumen and resilience over the years.
Projecting himself as battle-ready, Wontumi said the party must restore hope among its rank and file at a time when, according to him, there is growing despondency and loss of direction.
“What we can offer our members and Ghanaians now is hope and reassurance. I am built for the battle ahead,” he declared, calling on Western Region executives to rally behind his ambition.
He cited his long service record from a two-term constituency chairman to an unprecedented three-term Ashanti Regional Chairman as evidence of his preparedness for the national role.
He pledged not to compromise on strategies that would enhance the party’s electoral appeal ahead of 2028.
Reflecting on the party’s 2024 defeat, Wontumi said the setback had strengthened his resolve to work towards making Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the next President in 2028.
“As National Chairman, my work will be in the constituencies. The General Secretary will manage affairs at the headquarters, but my focus will be on the ground, mobilising every possible vote for victory in 2028,” he said.
Earlier, the Western Regional Chairman of the NPP, Nana Francis Ndede Siah, described Wontumi as a true grassroots politician deserving of strong backing.
He gave what appeared to be a tacit endorsement of the Ashanti Chairman’s ambition and pledged his personal support and resources toward his bid for the national chairmanship.
