The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has turned to one of Ghana’s leading private sector figures, Mr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong to serve as its first Chancellor, in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.

The University announced that the Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies will assume office on August 1, 2026 following his appointment by the University’s Governing Council under the provisions of the UniMAC Statutes.

The appointment comes as UniMAC continues to position itself as a leading institution for media, arts and communication education, with a renewed focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and practical industry engagement.

In a statement, the University described Mr. Ofori Sarpong as one of Ghana’s most accomplished entrepreneurs whose visionary leadership and commitment to national development have earned him widespread recognition in the business community.

According to UniMAC, his extensive experience across manufacturing, finance, construction, real estate and media will provide valuable leadership as the University seeks to build stronger partnerships with industry and prepare graduates for the evolving demands of the job market.

“As Chancellor, Mr. Ofori Sarpong will provide distinguished leadership, champion the University’s vision and strategic interests, strengthen its engagement with industry and society, and confer degrees and academic honours on behalf of the University,” the statement said.

The University expressed confidence that his appointment would enhance collaboration with corporate Ghana, expand opportunities for research and innovation, and improve graduate employability through closer ties with industry.

A Chartered Accountant, Mr. Ofori Sarpong is the founder of the Special Group of Companies and has also played key roles in several successful Ghanaian businesses, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited and U2 Salt Limited.

Beyond his business interests, he has distinguished himself through his contributions to education and public service, serving on several governing boards and supporting initiatives focused on youth empowerment and community development.

UniMAC said appointing a respected business leader as its inaugural Chancellor reflects its ambition to bridge the gap between academic excellence and industry relevance while positioning the institution to compete globally.
