The Ashanti Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has re-arrested an imposter who once paraded himself as a staff of the company and thus extorted monies from unsuspecting customers for the same offence.
Christian Asare was arrested on June 11, 2022 for parading himself as staff of the company and extorted monies from customers in a bid to help them solve their electricity or meters problems.
Mr. Gideon Kwame Otto, acting Manager, Ashanti South Business Unit of the company, explained that the culprit, Christian Asare and his accomplices created their own company,different from ECG, and was arrested at Apotuogya in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti region and arraigned before court.
The suspect was granted an police enquiry bail pending his re-appearance in court on the August 11, 2022.
However, before he could reappear in court at the next adjourned date, Asare was re-arrested for a similar offence at Kronum in the Afigya Kwabre South, with two other accomplices mentioned as Wofa Yaw, aka Pensioner and I.K. Acheampong, who are both at large.
According to ECG Manager, ChristianAsare was arrested, while his two accomplices at large imposed themselves as staff of ECG to extort money from a customer, Edmund Yeboah.
The ECG, together with the police CID, who were alerted by the victim’s son, arrested Christian Asare.
The culprits went to the house of the victim, dismantled his metre and re-fixed it, after impersonating ECG officials and telling the owner that the exercise was to reduce his indebtedness to the ECG.
The SBU manager said the imposter then charged GH¢6000.00.
