An ultramodern Divisional Police Headquarters constructed at the cost of GH¢2.8 million by Barima Osei Hwedie II, Chief of the Ejura Traditional Area, has been commissioned at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.
The facility was funded with the support of the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry, and Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Indemi, a renowned businessman from Bono State, Nigeria, chiefs and residents of Ejura.
It was formally commissioned by Ambrose Dery on Thursday, October 26, 2023, two years after the then former Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye, had cut the sod for its construction on Thursday May 6, 2021.
The new Divisional Police Command comprises 18 offices, three cells, and auxiliary facilities to facilitate effective policing in the area. Its construction was in response to recommendations made by a three-member ministerial committee that investigated the disturbances at Ejura, which recommended an expansion of the Ejura Police Station and increased personnel, among others.
The commissioning of the facility formed part of the weeklong Sekyerene (Yam) Festival by the chiefs and people of Ejura, which started on Friday, October 20, 2023, through to Sunday, October 29, 2023.
The theme for the occasion was: “Creating a Secured Environment for Economic Development of Ejura”.
Barima Osei Hwedie II used the occasion to call for peace and harmony at Ejura to accelerate development. He pledged the traditional authority’s support to the government in the provision of vital infrastructural projects in the area.
The Ejurahene expressed his profound gratitude to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for supporting the project in diverse ways, which had impacted positively on the lives of Ejura residents.
The Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, stressed the importance of effective collaboration between the state and development partners for such projects, and commended Barima Osei Hwedie II for the bold step he took to build the police command two years ago.
He called on residents of Ejura and its environs to support efforts by their prolific Chief by obeying the laws of the state.
