Transport Ministry makes massive progress in aviation sector

The Aviation sector, a subsector under the Ministry of Transport has witnessed massive infrastructural projects for the past two years.

This was announced by Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah , the Minister for Transport, at a press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information in Accra yesterday.

Outlining the major achievements in the aviation subsector, the Minister, who also has oversight responsibility for Maritime/Inland Waterways indicated that the ministry has completed the rehabilitation works on the Sunyani Airport Phase II. He indicated that the project will help improve connectivity and promote trade and tourism.

Again, the Minister said that in order to make Ghana the Aviation hub for the West African sub-region, as well as improve connectivity, trade and tourism, works on the Kumasi Airport phase two are all nearing completion. He noted that Phase II of the project is 100% complete while Phase III is 89.33% complete.

On the Tamale Airport phase two project, Mr Ofori Asiamah said studies are being carried out to ascertain the readiness of the airport.

On the establishment of an airport either in the Western or Central region, the Minister said a feasibility study to determine a suitable location to develop the airport is being finalized.

Fish landing sites and fishing harbour

Aside, the aviation sector, the Minister also spent time to talk about developments in the fishing and roads sectors.

Minister Ofori Asiamahnoted that to ensure safe launching and landing of artisanal fishing canoes, prevent and minimize post-harvest loses and maintain hygienic environment, as well as create jobs for the beneficiary communities and improve livelihoods, many inroads have been made in the area of landing sites and fishing harbours.

He indicated that all twelve landing sites at Axim, Dixcove, Moree, Mumford, Otuam, Mfantseman, Winneba, Senya Beraku, Gomoa Feteh, Teshie, Osu and Keta have reached substantial completion.

According to him, that of Elmina Fishing Port has been completed while that of Jamestown is 60% complete.

Road Sector

In the road sector, the Minister Ofori Asiamah said  in order to promote road-based mass transportation services and improve rural-urban and peri-urban linkages, the first 45 buses have been delivered and in operation and  said the remaining 55 buses would be delivered soon.
