Trader allegedly steals 114 bags of maize from farmer

Mohammed Latif Michael has allegedly suffered a fatal blow as his herdsman has connived with a trader to steal 114 bags of maize from his storeroom.

Each bag of maize weighed 50 kilogrammes, and the estimated value of the 114 bags is GH¢37,050.00.

The trader, Sarah Mensah, and the herdsman, Richmond Anane, were dragged before an Accra Circuit Court on Monday for stealing and abetment respectively.

They were put before the court, presided over by Isaac Oheneba Kuffour.

Sarah and Richmond pleaded not guilty to the offences and has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000.00 each with sureties each.

The case, presented by Chief Inspector Michael Vuvor, was that the farmer was the complainant and Richmond was taking care of his livestock and lives in his house.

He said on February 7, 2023, the complainant asked Richmond to help look for customers to buy his maize.

Richmond promised to do so and asked to see the quality of the maize and where it were stored.

On February 25, 2023, the complainant travelled and Richmond secretly opened the complainant’s storeroom for Sarah to make away with the 114 bags of maize, valued at GH¢37.050.00.

The court was told that Sarah sold all of the 114 bags of maize to unknown customers of hers.

When the complainant returned from his journey and detected the maize had been stolen, he suspected Richmond to be responsible for it.

The complainant, however, reported the case to the Baatsonaa police.

The court, at this material time, was not told how Sarah was arrested in connection with the theft case, but heard that during investigations the accused persons admitted the offence, but failed to assist the police to trace the alleged customers who bought the stolen maize.

The prosecution further added that all efforts made by the police to retrieve the money from the accused persons had also failed.

After investigation, the accused persons were charged with the offences and put before the court.
