Former President John Dramani Mahama has advised the public, particularly individuals feeling the pinch of the current the economic hardship, not to despair but remain steadfast, as “suicide is never the answer.”
Although Mr. Mahama said he appreciates the current economic challenge as dire and probably the worse since 1992, taking one’s life as a protest against the situation should not be contemplated.
He made the statement on his Facebook wall and other social media handles on Wednesday, following the death of a 24-year-old man, Kofi Kakra, who climbed an electricity pylon at Kasoa to commit suicide in protest against the economic hardship.
According to reports, the young man, who is a bus conductor, prior to his death, was alleged to be complaining about the general economic difficulties and other life struggles. On October 14, he decided to take his life to end it all on the electricity pylon.
However, the former President, in the social media post, stated: “I returned from a trip to hear the sad news of Kakra, who killed himself by electrocution.
“The current level of hardships in Ghana is dire, and probably the worst we have ever experienced in the last three decades, but suicide is never the answer.
“Even in the darkest night, there will come the dawn. The sun will rise again. Let’s be each other’s keeper. Let’s keep hope alive,” he urged.
