Suale, Others Back on Police Radar

The police, as a measure to resuscitate the unsolved murders and major crimes, have established the Cold Cases Unit (CCU) which will provide the needed oxygen to deal with the cases.

A case is considered unsolved until a suspect has been identified, charged and tried for the crime.

A highly placed source at the Police Headquarters, who preferred anonymity, informed The Chronicle that even though the creation is at an embryonic stage, the prospects for the service are enormous.

The source went on that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare’s dream of transforming the Ghana Police Service into a world class one, would be fully realised with some of these units coming into existence.

The elated source, who did not mince words, expressed appreciation for the move.

The unit’s presence has come to give tonic to all manner of persons who are interested in pursuing justice seeking cases, the source states.

He named some of the cold cases as that of Nene Atsure Benta, Manklalo of Prampram who was assassinated on December 13, 2018; Mrs Josephine Asante, Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority who was found dead in her Emefs Hillview Estates home near Afienya on January 13, 2019; Ahmed Suale, the investigative journalist who was shot dead by unknown gunman on January 19, 2019.

Others are Policewoman L/Cpl Agatha Nabin who on July 30, 2019 was shot dead at a snap checkpoint in Tamale; Policewoman Constable Sandra Asiedu of Damongo who was found murdered in her room on August 2, 2021.

The Chronicle’s probe further touched on the three ways to solve murder, which are physical evidence, witness testimony and confession, and that the CCU will have to operate with fluid budget to make it function as desired.
