Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, Dean of the UPSA Law School and an Associate professor of Comparative Constitutional and International law, has entreated students to embrace entrepreneurial aspirations because of the critical role Technical Education plays in the job market.

Prof. Abotsi acknowledged Kumasi Technical University (KsTU’s) transformation into a respected institution charting a course for technical education while delivering a speech at the Chancellor’s Public Lecture and history book launch as part of the 70th-anniversary celebration of the university last week Friday.

The theme for the Chancellor’s Public Lecture was: “Bridging the Skills Gap: Investing in Technical Education for Employment and Growth”.

According to him, previously Technical Education was often undervalued, but presently it stands as a leader inventing solutions and driving progress.

He stressed that the world today is led not by universities that propound theories, but the universities that continue to invent. He urged KsTU to learn from its past, build upon its successes while avoiding past mistakes because law is not the answer to the future, but technology.

Prof. Abotsi lauded KsTU for being on the side of the future, while the legal profession, like many others, belongs to the past.

He also emphasized that the historical book commemorating KsTU’s 70th anniversary serves as a tool for self-reflection, allowing the university to recognize its strengths and address its flaws to better navigate the future.

Vice Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University, Professor Gabriel Dwomoh, stated that the commemoration of the 70 years of excellence marks meaningful achievements from a humble beginning in 1954 to become one of Ghana’s premier technical universities.

He said the institution acknowledges the generations of leaders, educators and students who have contributed to making the university the beacon of technical and vocational education.

He stated that in an era of rapid technological advancements and evolving job market demands, technical education remains the cornerstone for national development.

Prof Dwomoh reiterated that at KsTU, they take pride in their role as a key driver of industrial and economic transformation through their innovative programmes, research initiatives and strong industry partnerships, and continue to produce highly skilled graduates who are shaping various sectors in Ghana and beyond.

The VC said as part of the 70th Anniversary Legacy Project, KsTU is embarking on construction of an ultramodern, state-of-the-art hospital. The facility, he said, will not only serve the healthcare needs of staff and students, but also the surrounding communities.

It will also serve as  a critical training centre for their students pursuing programmes in the health-related fields such as pharmaceutical science, health statistics, medical laboratory technology, and their soon-to-commence Nursing School.

He said the initiative aligns with KsTU’s broader vision of expanding their academic offerings while directly contributing to national healthcare delivery.

He noted that such an ambitious project requires the collective support of all stakeholders, including government agencies, industry players, alumni, and well-wishers, and therefore called upon all to partner them in making the vision a reality. He stated that it is not just a KsTU initiative but a national course that will positively impact countless number of lives.
