Ghana’s Most Beautiful (GMB) 2020 winner Naa Dedei Botchwey has expressed that social media has not changed beauty standards but has instead exposed people to different perspectives of beauty.

Speaking on The Queens Lounge on TV3, she explained that social media algorithms are designed to show users more of the type of content they engage with, creating different realities for different audiences.

“I wouldn’t say that social media has changed the beauty standards. I think what social media has done is it has opened everyone up to Everything that’s available out there. The social media algorithm works such that it brings you more of what you watch. So I have found myself in situations where maybe I’m getting a particular type of content over and over and over again. Whatever you believe in or whichever side you choose to belong, that’s what you see.”

Naa Dede noted that while some corners of social media promote body enhancement procedures such as Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL) and liposuction, other communities advocate body positivity and inclusivity by encouraging women of all body types to embrace themselves.

“You go to social media and then you see all these Body alterations where people are doing the BBL the liposuction and all that But there’s also a part of social media where people are advocating for more inclusivity. There’s a part of social media where plus-size woman are Wearing bikinis.

“So when I see woman with big tummies or flappy skin in bikinis. Initially, I’d be like, okay, it’s a bit uncomfortable But then I know why it’s being done because they want society to accept them exactly.”

She added that social media provides space for different communities and perspectives to coexist, allowing especially young women to navigate various ideals as they discover their own identities.
