Six basic schools in the Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region are benefitting from renovation works being embarked upon by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dorcas Affo-Toffey.
The schools are Gyegyekro Basic, Cocoa Town Basic, Alenrezule Basic, Tikobo Number 2 Basic, Anlomatuope Basic, Mpaesem Basic, and Elubo Basic.
At Mpaesem Basic School, the MP is renovating a four classroom unit block. The structure is so short that it is now being raised in order to address the problem of rainstorms ripping off the roof. 50-bags of cement for plastering and 160 roofing sheets have been provided by the Legislature for the renovation of the block, that apart, she has also presented a sum of GH¢10,000 towards the completion of the work.
At Elubo Basic School, Dorcas Affo-Toffey donated sand, roofs materials, and an undisclosed amount of money for the completion of the uncompleted school block.
The block was initiated by the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of the school, but the project had to be halted because of lack of funds.
At Tikobo Number 2 Basic School, the MP has provided emulsion paints for the painting of the school block, which, the Western File understands, had not been painted in the last 20 years.
Both the Junior High and Primary schools, made up of nine classroom blocks, are being painted by the MP. In addition, she has also erected metal poles for both volley court and a football pitch in the school.
At Alenzule Basic School, lessons were being held under trees, as a result, the community decided to put up their own school block through communal labour from Primary one to six, but due to lack of funds and absence of water, the project was halted.
But the Jomoro MP has extended water to the school and given an undisclosed sum of money for the completion of the school block.
New Ankasa M/A Primary School had two classrooms for the nursery department, office for teachers which had not been plastered, but Madam Affo-Tofey has, consequently, extended a hand of help, by purchasing a trip load of sand, roofing materials, and 50 bags of cement to start work on the project.
The Headmaster of New Ankasa M/A Primary School, Gibson Adomako Kyere, said: “We decided to house the children in this compound, because we had no KG block.”
“Two weeks ago, our canteen was razed down, so we got alarmed. We spoke to the MP and within a week we had cement, sand, etc to complete the block,” he added.
The Legislature has also extended a helping hand to Gyegyekrom Basic School, where she has purchased four packets of roofing sheets, 40 bags of cement, and given an undisclosed sum money for the completion of the project.
Madam Affo-Toffey said: “The Headmasters and assembly members told me of the challenges in the school, so I decided to move in to help them, because education is key.
“The canteen had been demolished and the building would have collapse on the children”.
“So being a mother, and also knowing the importance of education and seeing the kids, future leaders,” MP Toffey said, she decided to provide 50 bags of cement and three trips of sand to complete the project.
