The Circuit Court 8 in Accra, presided over by His Honour Jojo Amoah Hagan, has granted bail to Benedicta Asamoah, an unemployed woman accused of stealing more than GH¢257,000 from her employer.

Asamoah was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢260,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified with landed property.

The court further ordered that the original document covering the property be deposited at the court registry.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, was directed to file all disclosures and witness statements one week before the next sitting on December 16, 2025, for the Case Management Conference (CMC).

Asamoah has been charged with stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Background

According to the facts presented in court, the complainant, a trader who owns a diaper shop at Makola, employed Asamoah as a salesgirl in August 2024.

In February 2025, the complainant travelled to the United Kingdom, leaving the shop in Asamoah’s care until her return on October 9, 2025.

Shortly after returning, the complainant asked Asamoah to assist her in taking stock of the shop. They began the exercise, but could not complete it on the first day.

The following day, the complainant discovered that Asamoah had packed her belongings and left the house without notice, leaving behind the shop keys. Several attempts to reach her were unsuccessful, prompting the complainant to report the matter to police.

Asamoah was later arrested and assisted in completing the stock-taking exercise. The final stock count allegedly revealed that GH¢257,750.90 was missing.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer said Asamoah admitted to taking the money, claiming she had invested the daily sales in an online job opportunity that required depositing funds into digital accounts with the promise of returns. After investigations, she was charged and brought before the court.

The case has been adjourned to December 16, 2025, for further proceedings.
