Rotary Club cuts sod to construct 34 boreholes, 286 micro flush toilet facilities

The Kumasi Rotary Club, in conjunction with its counterpart at Obuasi, has cut the sod for the commencement of the construction of 34 boreholes and 286 micro flush toilet facilities for residents of Kona in the Afigya Sekyere East District.

The projects form part of initiatives being undertaken by Governor David Osei Amankwah of District 9104.

Nana Effah Mensah, President of the Rotary Club in Kumasi, disclosed that an estimated 37,000 people in the Ashanti Region were expected to benefit from the project within the communities in Obuasi and Kumasi at the cost of US$223,000, with funding from the Foundation.

According to him, the Club was partnering the Salem Rotary Club, Virginia, USA with sponsorship by various Rotary clubs, districts, non-Rotarians and individuals in Ghana, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, United Kingdom.

Nana Effah Mensah indicated that, Rotary, as a human-centered institution, had, over the years, demonstrated its commitment to helping improve sanitation and access to potable water which was a key feature in its seven focused areas.

He noted that their primary focus, as a club, was to help the poor and vulnerable in society, a commitment, he said, they would not renege on, but continue to make society better through their projects and programmes.

The President of the Kumasi Rotary Club said the projects were expected to be completed within 12 months in fulfillment of the quest of Rotary Clubs to promote goodwill and prevent water borne diseases in communities across the country.

Mr. Godfrey Mwachande, President of the Obuasi Club also disclosed that efforts were being made to form Rotary Community Corps in its project locations whose mandate will be to sustain the interventions of Rotarians in their communities.

Nana Amponsah Agyeman III, the Queen mother of Kona who graced the sod-cutting ceremony commended Rotarians for their efforts in improving the living standards of mankind through their activities and projects.

She expressed her excitement that Kona was benefiting from the boreholes and household Micro flush toilets and assured that the community leaders will ensure that the projects are sustained to benefit generations unborn.

She said the projects would help improve access to good drinking water and resolve issues of poor sanitation which was a problem in the community.
