President Akufo-Addo has appealed to the security agencies in the country to put in their maximum sacrifice to ensure that peace and security prevail in the country.
Interacting with some of the state security personnel at Wa, as part of his tour of Upper West Region last Sunday, he explained that the role of the security personnel for peace in every nation is critical and that they should put their lives in line of danger to protect others.
According to the president, they “don’t have the luxury, even when you sleep, one eye has to be opened because of the nature of your work,” unlike the civilians who “have the luxury to be able to shut both eyes for a few hours every day.”
He commended the good works of the security personnel and urged them to continue to sacrifice for the peace and security of the country.
The president further charged the security agencies to double their efforts in safeguarding the country’s borders against the activities of the extremist groups in neighbouring countries.
He called for collaborative efforts between the security agencies and the civilian community in ensuring that peace and security prevail in the country.
President Akufo-Addo assured the security personnel of his government’s solemn commitment to providing the needed logistics and human resource for them to discharge their duties.
He said the prosperity and development of any nation depended on its peace, saying “If we don’t have security, peace and stability in our country, there is nothing that we can do meaningfully.”
According to him, it is based on this that his government had been enhancing the capacities of the country’s security systems including the Armed Forces, Police Service and Immigration services to prevent the violent extremists’ invasion into the country.
He added that government has put in measures to strengthen border security especially in the northern part of the country as the northern borders were linked to Burkina Faso – one of the country’s noted for violent extremists’ activities.
He explained that as part of the measures, the government was establishing three forward operating bases in the Upper West Region at Hamile, Jirapa and Tumu, and added that the government was considering request to extent the bases to Gwollu and Wechaiu.
The president came in the company of the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, the Information Minister, Mr Kojo Opong Nkrumah, the Minister of Local Government, Mr Daniel Botwe and the Minister of Roads and Highways, among others.
