Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured Ghanaians that the Ghana Police Service will intensify its crackdown on criminal syndicates and pursue suspected criminals regardless of where they hide.
According to the IGP, sustained intelligence-led operations conducted across the country have resulted in the arrest of several suspects, the recovery of firearms and ammunition and the disruption of organised robbery networks.
Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, Mr Yohuno said the Police Administration remained determined to make the country increasingly difficult for criminals to operate.
“Let me once again make it clear to all criminals out there, the Ghana Police Service under my leadership will sustain this; and no matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” he stated.
He said the Police Service had been monitoring the activities of suspected criminal gangs in the Western, Northern, Savannah and Greater Accra regions, leading to the deployment of special intelligence teams to undertake targeted operations.
The IGP said the operations, conducted over several weeks, had produced “significant gains” and resulted in the arrest of suspects and recovery of weapons and other exhibits.
He highlighted seven major breakthroughs recorded by the Police.
Suspect arrested over murder of missing couple
According to him, his outfit has arrested a 32-year-old man, Abraham Awundok, in connection with the alleged murder of Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.The IGP said investigations had led the Police to suspect that the couple had been murdered.
Following searches at their residence and other locations they were believed to have visited, as well as information provided by family members, the mortal remains of the couple were recovered and deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Investigations subsequently identified Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, as the alleged perpetrator.
According to the IGP, Awundok allegedly murdered the couple before taking their mobile phones, money and private vehicle and fleeing Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.
He was subsequently declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30, 2026 by Investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
The suspect, Mr Yohuno said, admitted to the murders during interrogation and remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
Police foil planned bank robbery in Accra
The Police also announced the arrest of a suspect linked to a robbery syndicate accused of targeting banks and their customers in parts of Greater Accra.
The IGP said the syndicate had been under surveillance following complaints received in April 2026 about criminals monitoring bank customers after they withdrew money.
The suspects allegedly used master keys to open vehicles belonging to their victims and, in some cases, broke into the vehicles.
Police intelligence also indicated that the group was planning attacks on some banks.
The Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP subsequently mounted surveillance on the suspected gang.
According to the IGP, the gang was linked to several incidents, including the robbery of GH¢50,000 from a woman at Agbamaame in Tema Community 2, on May 17, 2026 after she had withdrawn the money from a bank.
On June 11, 2026 another victim was allegedly attacked at gunpoint at Achimota after withdrawing money from a bank.
On August 13, 2026 the surveillance team received information that members of the gang had been spotted at a bank along Spintex Road and were heading towards Labone and Cantonments.
The suspects were allegedly travelling in a black Hyundai Tucson and a Toyota Highlander.
The Police later spotted them positioned between banks at Labone, where they were allegedly monitoring the facilities in preparation for an attack.
A swift Police intervention foiled the planned operation. Two suspects were shot, one escaped, while another was arrested.
A search of the Toyota Highlander resulted in the recovery of 13 different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 pistol.
Investigations, according to the IGP, established that the suspects allegedly brought vehicles into Ghana and changed the Nigerian registration plates to Ghanaian plates for use in their criminal activities.
One of the accused persons, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, 49, has been remanded in custody.
Five-member robbery gang dismantled
The Police have also dismantled a suspected robbery gang operating in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.
The operations, conducted between August and September 4, 2026, targeted a gang allegedly responsible for attacks on gold dealers’ shops, mining sites and communities.
Five suspects were arrested, while another suspect, identified as Seidu Salifu, 40, died during the operation.
Police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles.
The suspects arrested include Clinton Mawuli, 33; Richmond Mensah, alias “Master Abey”; Daniel Sarfo, alias “Abedi”; Prince Duker and another suspect.
Salifu was said to be linked to other robbery incidents at Sakam near Offinso and was standing trial at the Nsuta Circuit Court over the alleged robbery of gold bullion at Offinso Abofour in July 2025.
The IGP further disclosed that on August 21, the Western Regional Police Command arrested four suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near AgonaNkwanta.
They were identified as Amponsah, Christopher Seyiri, alias “Cross and Die”, 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; Thomas Odoom, alias “Wale”, 30 and Isaac Quayeson, alias “Last Burial”, who was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region.
Police recovered two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses. Special teams, the IGP said, had been deployed to affected communities to strengthen security.
Three suspects arrested over Northern Region robberies
The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate has also arrested three suspects over a series of armed robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.
The suspects – Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna, alias “Saaga” – are allegedly part of a robbery gang operating with two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun.
The gang is also accused of operating along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road and selling stolen motorbikes to contacts in Tamale and Savelugu.
The suspects are further alleged to be responsible for the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso, near the Damango junction, earlier this year.
They remain in Police custody as efforts continue to arrest other alleged accomplices and retrieve the weapons.
Buipe Cattle Market robbery mastermind killed
The Police also announced the death of a 60-year-old man, identified as Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu. He was allegedly the mastermind behind the robbery and murder at the Buipe Cattle Market.
The IGP said Beliko, who was also a trader at the market, allegedly contracted robbers and provided them with weapons to attack people carrying large sums of money to the market.
On June 29, 2026 two mobile money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market were attacked by armed robbers who allegedly made away with GH¢430,000.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of Yacouba Oumar, 28 and the recovery of a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun.
The Police Intelligence Directorate later received information on September 5 about Beliko’s whereabouts.
A team proceeded to the cattle market and placed him under surveillance. The IGP said the suspect attempted to escape during the operation and was shot. He later died from his injuries.
Gang leader arrested over Accra-Kumasi highway robbery
The Police have also arrested a suspected gang leader and other persons in connection with a highway robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway on August 18, 2026.
The suspects include Obotan, identified as the alleged gang leader; his biological mother, who is accused of concealing the weapon used in the robbery; Issaka Napson, alleged to be the gang’s weapons supplier; Issaka Majeed and Majeed Huzeifa.
A 14-year-old juvenile, who allegedly served as a lookout, was also arrested.A search of the suspects’ residences led to the recovery of an ADLER pump-action gun, a double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition, cutlasses, handcuffs, jack knives, pepper spray, a pinch bar, ammunition pouch, tactical vest and an unregistered Royal 125 motorbike.
The suspects are in custody assisting investigations, while the Police continue efforts to arrest another alleged accomplice identified as Tanko.
Eight AK-47 rifles recovered
The Police further disclosed that five suspects had been arrested for allegedly trading in firearms following intelligence-led operations conducted between June and July 2026.
The operations, led by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP, resulted in the recovery of eight AK-47 assault rifles, one SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.
The suspects are Munkaila Yusif, alias “Karyima”, 34; Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, 32; Abdallah Imrana Gomda, 43; Sualesu Sheriffa, 20 and Ibrahim Adams, alias “Ibru”, 35.
They have been remanded into lawful custody by the Accra Circuit Court, with the case adjourned to Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Other suspects believed to be involved in the weapons trade and currently at large are being pursued.
IGP thanks public and government
Mr Yohuno commended Police officers who participated in the operations, saying their dedication and professionalism had contributed significantly to the successes recorded.
He assured personnel that the Police Administration would continue to recognise and reward hard work.
The IGP also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the government for providing logistical support to the Police.
He said the provision of armoured vehicles, particularly pick-ups, had been instrumental in the success of recent operations.
Mr Yohuno also thanked members of the public for providing timely intelligence and urged them to report information on suspects still at large to the nearest Police station, or through the Police emergency line, 191.
He assured the public that such information would be treated with strict confidentiality. Reiterating his warning to criminals, the IGP said the Police would sustain their operations until criminal networks were dismantled.
“No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” he said.
