The cocoa beans, weighing 11,800 kilogrammes, were intercepted at Bunkpurugu on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following information received by the Police about a truck transporting a suspicious consignment towards the Togo border.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the truck, a Hyundai Rhino with registration number AS-3272-25, was loaded with plantain and cocoa when it was stopped at the Bunkpurugu Police Snap Check Point.
The four suspects arrested have been identified as Dickson Asante, 35, the driver of the truck; Gideon Tab, 19, the mate; Mohammed Mumin, 22; and Ernestina Akugre, 23, who reportedly claimed ownership of the consignment.
A subsequent search of the vehicle at the Customs Office by a joint security team comprising the Police, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, GRA Customs Division and National Security uncovered the cocoa beans.
The Police said the plantain was allegedly being used as a decoy to conceal the cocoa beans.
The interception comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to prevent the unauthorised movement of cocoa across Ghana’s borders.
The four suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before court to face charges.The Police said the suspects would face the full rigours of the law if found culpable.
