The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
The suspect, Michael Mensah, was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on its official X account said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly picked up the deceased on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m. from Ayensu Plaza, located within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave.
According to the police, the suspect, who claims to be a teacher by profession but also works as a driver, subsequently transported the victim to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the student remain under investigation, as police work to establish the full facts of the case and determine the motive behind the alleged crime.
The arrest comes amid growing public concern over the safety of students, particularly within and around tertiary institutions.

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and pledged to provide updates as new information emerges.
“Investigations continue, and any further development will be duly communicated,” the statement said.
The body of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu was reportedly discovered after she had been declared missing, triggering a police investigation that culminated in the arrest of the suspect.
Michael Mensah is expected to assist investigators with their enquiries and may be put before court once investigations are completed.
The Ghana Police Service has urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work to ensure justice for the deceased and her family.
