Senator Godswill Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly defaming her.

The suit was filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Tuesday with Akpabio and his senior legislative aide Mfon Patrick listed as second to third defendants.

In the suit, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan through her lawyer, Victor Giwa, referred to Akpabio’s words published by his aide on his Facebook page with the title, “Is local content committee of the senate Natasha’s birthright?” where he stated that the claimant thought being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the Chambers.

Giwa alleged that the statement on Akpoti-Uduaghan was defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, and lowered her dignity in the eyes of her colleagues and right-thinking members of the public.

“A declaration that the words ‘it is a bottled anger by the Kogi Lawmaker, who knows nothing about legislative rules. She thinks being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the Chambers’ used and written by the 3rd defendant at the prompting of the 1st and 2nd defendants is defamatory and intended to cause public opprobrium and disaffection towards the claimant by members of the public,” her reliefs partly read.

Emefiele Loses Bid To Stop Trial As Judge Refuses To Recuse Self

0
Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele

The Special Offences Court in Lagos has refused to stop hearing the corruption allegations made against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Justice Rahman Oshodi in his ruling on Wednesday dismissed the request for him to recuse himself from the trial, stating that the allegations of bias against him were unsubstantiated.

Citing a range of legal authorities, the court held that judicial bias is insufficient to justify disqualification or recusal, adding that it must be personal or based on some judicial reasoning.

The judge subsequently held that the application for his recusal lacked merit and he promptly refused it.

At the last sitting of the court on Monday, Emefiele, through his lead counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), had requested that Justice Oshodi step down from the proceedings.

The counsel argued that by allowing the prosecution ask a leading question that the defence had previously objected to, the judge had made it impossible for the defence to fairly cross-examine the witness. He requested that Justice Oshodi recuse himself from further hearings.

Fuel price drop: Group backs NNPCL’s reforms

A Niger Delta anti-pipeline vandalisation group has backed the reforms championed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to stabilise the country’s oil and gas downstream sector.

The National Coordinator, Anti-Pipeline, Oil Theft & Illegal Bunkering Task Force, Pathfinder Fiawei, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, the reforms, which are the initiative of the Downstream at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, led by Isiyaku Abdullahi, have deeply impacted and galvanised that part of the oil and gas value chain.

He noted that NNPCL’s efforts have spurred competitiveness in the country’s downstream sector as Nigerians experience a gradual drop in the price of Premium Motor Spirit.

This comes amid controversies over the import of Premium Motor Spirit despite Dangote Refinery’s capacity to meet 100 percent of petroleum demand in Nigeria.

At the ongoing Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, assured Nigerians that the state-owned oil firm is committed to ensuring energy security in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.

While NNPC retail stations sell PMS at N965 per litre, Dangote petrol is sold at N945 per litre in MRS filling stations.

PMS is sold between N970 and N1000 at other filling stations across the country.

How Aging Affects Your Hearing

0

Will It Happen to Me?

The short answer is more than likely yes — at least to some extent. Most of us will gradually lose some of our hearing as we get older. In the U.S., about a third of people ages 65 to 74 have hearing loss. Almost half of people over age 75 have some trouble hearing. But there are things you can do to help preserve as much of your hearing as possible, as long as possible.

What Causes It?

Most of the time, hearing loss with age happens about the same way in both ears. It’s usually because of changes in the ear itself over time. Most often those changes are in the inner ear, but they can be in other parts. Sometimes changes in the nerves connecting the ear and brain may be involved.

It’s Not Just About Your Age

Several things influence how much hearing you’ll lose as you get older. These include:

  • Health conditions you may have, such as diabetes, ear infections that come back, high blood pressure, and diabetes
  • Medications you’ve taken, including aspirin, chemotherapy, and some antibiotics
  • Your exposure to loud sounds like music, lawn mowers, fireworks, gunfire, loud engines, and planes
  • Whether or not hearing loss runs in your family

Watch for These Signs

If your hearing is off, you may have:

  • Trouble understanding words or following a conversation, especially in noisy places like restaurants
  • Difficulty making out consonants, such as “s,” “t,” “k,” “p,” and “f”
  • Trouble hearing high-pitched sounds like doorbells or phones
  • Ringing in your ears, a condition called tinnitus

Do I Have a Hearing Problem?

If you think you might have a hearing problem but aren’t sure, consider these questions:

  • Are you embarrassed sometimes because you can’t hear?
  • Does talking with family or friends frustrate you because you can’t hear them?
  • Do you need to turn the TV or radio up louder than other people do to hear it?
  • Do you feel that your hearing restricts or limits you in any way?

If you answered “yes” to some of these and are concerned about your hearing, it’s time to get it checked.

Specialists Who May Help

An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor looks in your ears to see if there’s a reason why you’ve lost some hearing besides your age.  An audiologist measures hearing and tells you how much hearing you’ve lost. A hearing aid specialist also can measure your hearing and fit you for a hearing aid if you need one.

Treatments

If your hearing loss is substantial, your doctor might recommend a hearing aid. Hearing aids are electronic devices you wear in your ear. They make things sound louder. Some are so small, you can barely see them. Try out different hearing aids and make sure you get one that’s comfortable and works well for you.

What Else Helps

Assistive listening devices can make things that you need to hear louder. Ask at places like your theater, airport, and house of worship if they have portable receivers you can wear to hear better. When a person is talking, pay close attention to their mouth, lips, and gestures. This may help you to catch more of what they’re saying.

Ask for Help

Don’t hesitate to let friends, family, and others know you have some hearing loss. There are simple ways you and those around you can make hearing easier:

  • Ask people to speak up and talk clearly without shouting.
  • Ask for them to help make sure you can see their faces when they’re talking.
  • Limit background noise at home.
  • When you are out, try to pick quieter spots.

Protect Your Hearing

  • There’s no sure way to stop or slow hearing loss with age. But you can take steps to make sure you aren’t making matters worse. Do your best to avoid loud noises at work and in your free time. When you can’t avoid loud noises, wear earplugs or earmuffs to protect your ears and your hearing.

White House explains Musk’s attendance at Cabinet meeting

0
Elon Musk

President Donald Trump will convene his first official Cabinet meeting today. The White House said Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who has led the effort to remake the federal government but is not a Cabinet member, is attending as “secretaries take the advice and direction of DOGE.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt explained to White House reporters on Wednesday why Elon Musk will attend Trump’s first Cabinet meeting, despite not being a Cabinet member, and gave a preview ahead of Wednesday’s anticipated gathering.

“Well, Elon is working with the Cabinet secretaries and their staff every single day to identify waste and fraud and abuse at these respective agencies,” Leavitt answered when asked why he was attending. “All of the Cabinet secretaries take the advice and direction of DOGE,” she said.

Leavitt continued to emphasize that the secretaries “work alongside” DOGE and continued to provided a preview of the meeting.

“Cabinet members will be providing updates on their efforts,” she said. “And providing updates on what they’re doing at their agencies in terms of policy and implementing the promises that the president made on the campaign trail.”

Elon Musk’s presence at President Donald Trump’s first Cabinet meeting will solidify his power in the administration – and show how quickly he’s amassed it despite not being elected or confirmed by the Senate.

The meeting comes as Musk attempts to gut the federal workforce and reshape it in Trump’s image, including sweeping orders to employees across the government, which has begun to grate on Cabinet secretaries and members of Congress, multiple sources told CNN.

Rwanda criticises UK for suspending aid over support of rebel group

The Rwanda-backed M23 group

The UK’s decision to suspend some aid to Rwanda is “punitive”, authorities in the East African country have said. In a statement, the UK said it was against Rwanda’s support for the M23, a rebel group that has captured swathes of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in a deadly uprising.

Rwanda used to deny backing the M23, but recently it has adopted a more defensive line, saying fighting near the border between DR Congo and Rwanda is a threat to its security.

More than 7,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes since the conflict escalated in January, DR Congo’s government says.

The UK said the humanitarian situation in DR Congo was “critical” and that it would halt bilateral aid to Rwanda, “excluding support to the poorest and most vulnerable”.

Earlier this month, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said Rwanda receives about £32m ($40m) of bilateral aid from the UK every year.

Along with the suspension of aid, the UK will impose other measures, such as looking into potential sanctions and suspending “future defence training assistance”, the statement said.

These measures will last until “significant progress” is made in ceasing hostilities and withdrawing Rwandan military personnel from DR Congo, it added.

UN experts have previously estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops are in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda’s foreign ministry said the “punitive measures” announced by the UK government “in response to the conflict in eastern DRC – where the UK has now clearly chosen a side – are regrettable”.

US president Trump promotes Gaza plan in AI video

0
Screengrab from the video posted by President Trump

US President Donald Trump posted a video on his Truth Social account late on Tuesday, which appears to have been created with generative AI, promoting the transformation of Gaza into a Gulf state-like resort featuring a golden statue of himself, a hummus-eating Elon Musk, and shirtless American and Israeli leaders lounging on a beach.

“No more tunnels, no more fear,” a voice sings over a dance beat. “Trump Gaza is finally here!”

The American president has proposed expelling 2.1 million Palestinians from Gaza and transforming the enclave into a “Riviera” that would be owned by the United States.

The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority has called that proposal a “serious violation of international law.” The PA foreign minister, Varsen Aghabekian Shaheen, said earlier this month: “We have tried displacement before, and it will not happen again,” referring to the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced during the Arab-Israeli war that led to the creation of Israel in 1948.

The video opens on barefoot Palestinian children walking through Gazan rubble. “What’s next?” a title card asks. They walk towards a skyline of skyscrapers lining Gaza’s coast.

“Donald’s coming to set you free,” a voice sings.

“Trump Gaza shining bright. Golden future, a brand-new light. Feast and dance. The deed is done.”

The video, incongruously, features bearded and bikini-clad belly dancers, a child holding a golden balloon in the shape of Trump’s head, and Elon Musk dancing on a beach under a shower of US dollars.

As the Truth Social video ends, the camera pushes in on Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sipping drinks on a beach.

Pro-Russia Romanian presidential candidate questioned by prosecutors

0
Calin Georgescu speaks to the media in Izvorani, Romania

Calin Georgescu, a far-right presidential candidate in Romania, has been taken in for questioning by police as part of an investigation into his campaign, which last year prompted the country’s constitutional court to cancel an election.

Georgescu was pulled over for questioning by police on Wednesday as he was about to file his new candidacy for the new presidential election, set for May, his communications team announced.

“Where is democracy, where are the partners who must defend democracy?” his team asked in a post on Facebook, in an apparent appeal to Trump administration officials who have recently voiced support for Georgescu.

Georgescu, a former soil scientist who was virtually unknown before last year’s presidential election, unexpectedly won the first round of the vote in Romania, a NATO member that shares a border with Ukraine.

During his TikTok-fueled campaign, Georgescu was critical of NATO, skeptical about Western support for Ukraine and warm towards Vladimir Putin, calling the Russian president a “patriot.”

Before the second-round vote, Romania’s constitutional court annulled the election, saying its decision was motivated by fears of foreign interference.

Mahama’s Reset Agenda Kick-Starts! … NIB Starts Probing Akufo-Addo’s Appointees

0
President John Mahama

The government of President Mahama has started probing former appointees of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration suspected to have links with alleged illegalities while in office.

It is not clear how many of the Akufo-Addo political appointees would be pursued by the investigative bodies, but at least three are already in the dragnet of National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

At the last count on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 the former minister for Railways, Joe Ghartey; the former board chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi; the former deputy director of operations, National Service Authority (NSA), Kwaku Ohene Gyan; and others have all been contacted by the National Investigation Bureau.

Joe Ghartey is reported to be assisting the NIB in investigating the Sky Train project, since he was the sector minister for railways.

Also, the Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, was arrested by the NIB and granted bail. Reports have suggested that the NIB is chasing him for alleged involvement in some million-dollar transaction.

It has been suggested that the arrests could be linked to the Sky Train project where some payments were made but the project did not see the light of day, though The Chronicle is yet to independently verify same.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and his lawyers have not stated the reason for his arrest by the NIB, after securing a bail.

However, in the case of former officials of the National Service Authority, Gifty Oware-Mensah, who was the Deputy Director,is yet to appear before the NIB,but former NSA Deputy Director, Kwaku Ohene Gyan has reported to the security outfit.

The NSA probe has come on the heels of investigative report by the Fourth Estate, a Media Foundation for West Africa project on alleged ghost names on the National Service System.

RESET

All these are happening nearly two months into the second coming of John Mahama, who has promised a reset.

Though investigating and possibly prosecuting former government appointees is not new, it is not known whether this government will be keen to pursue more of the former ministers for accountability, which is part of its resetting agenda.

ORAL

The actions being taken by the NIB appear separate from the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) operations, which has sent its report to the president, who has also handed it over to the Attorney General for further action.

The National Service allegation is part of the ORAL report, as The Fourth Estate submitted it to the committee, with the Office of the Special Prosecutor also carrying out investigations on the same issue.

ACCOUNTABILITY

In a related development, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has, since assuming office, withdrawn about five political cases involving members of the ruling party.

Some of the cases are – Republic vrs Ato Forson;Republic v. Ofosu Ampofo & Another; Case ofDr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni & Seidu Agongo and Case of Dr. Johnson Asiama, former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana,

These individuals were facing trials for alleged acts of causing financial loss to the state.

The AG, in his defence, said President Mahama should not be blamed for the nolle prosequi he had filed and that all the decisions came from him.
