Pro-Ukraine protests across US after Trump-Zelensky clash

Pro-Ukraine protesters

Pro-Ukraine protests have taken place across the US after Donald Trump and JD Vance’s angry exchange with Volodymr Zelensky at the White House.

Hundreds of people gathered in New York, Los Angeles and Boston to express their support for Ukraine after the furious row in the Oval Office.

Protesters holding pro-Ukraine signs also lined a road in Waitsfield, Vermont, where Vice-President Vance and his family were visiting for a ski holiday.

US media reported the family moved to an undisclosed location from their planned ski resort because of the demonstrations.

A protest in Waitsfield against the Trump-Vance administration had been organised earlier in the week – before the US president and vice-president’s clash with Zelensky – but many signs referenced the row and Russia’s war with Ukraine.

“I think [Friday’s] performance at the White House has probably galvanised even more people to come out today,” Judy Daly, from Indivisible Mad River Valley, the group which organised the protest, told Vermont Public Radio.

“[Vance] crossed the line,” protester Cori Giroux added.

Ahead of the Vance family’s trip, Vermont’s governor Phil Scott had urged people to “be respectful” to them.

Scott, the Republican governor who refused to vote for Trump, said: “I welcome the vice-president and his family to Vermont and hope they enjoy their weekend here.

“It’s no surprise they chose Vermont, we’ve had a lot of snow this winter, which has been good for our economy.”

He added: “I hope Vermonters remember the vice-president is here on a family trip with his young children and, while we may not always agree, we should be respectful.

PKK declares ceasefire in 40-year conflict with Turkey

The PKK declaration of ceasefire is a major step towards ending the conflict

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has declared it will implement a ceasefire with Turkiye, heeding a call from its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan to disarm.

The statement by the outlawed group, published by the pro-PKK Firat news agency (ANF) on Saturday, is seen as a major step towards ending a 40-year conflict with the Turkish state.

“In order to pave the way for the implementation of leader Apo’s [Ocalan’s] call for peace and democratic society, we are declaring a ceasefire effective from today,” the PKK executive committee said in the statement quoted by ANF.

“We agree with the content of the call as it is, and we say that we will follow and implement it,” the committee said.

“None of our forces will take armed action unless attacked,” it added.

On Thursday, Ocalan made a historic call from prison for the party to lay down its arms, dissolve itself and end its decades-long conflict with the Turkish state.

The PKK said it hoped Ankara would release Ocalan, held in near total isolation since 1999, so he could lead a disarmament, adding that political and democratic conditions need to be established for the process to succeed.

The statement did not specify a timeline for the group to disband.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Turkiye would “always keep our iron fist ready in case the hand we extend is left in the air or bitten”.

Speaking at a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner in Istanbul on Saturday, Erdogan added: “We will continue our ongoing [military] operations, if necessary, until we eliminate the last terrorist without leaving a single stone on top of another, without leaving a single head on his shoulder.” Credit: aljazeera.com

Europe seeks to take control of Ukraine negotiations

0
Starmer gave Zelensky a friendly welcome

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer sought to wrestle control of negotiations over the Russia-Ukraine war away from the US on Sunday, hosting dozens of European leaders and outlining a pathway towards peace on a pivotal day of diplomacy in London.

Starmer hosted a summit in London’s ornate Lancaster House, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and an ensemble of European leaders in attendance, at a moment of intense anxiety in the conflict.

In attendance were French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, Finland president Alexander Stubb, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Sweden Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Støre.

Leaders are hoping to revive the prospects of an acceptable peace deal after US President Donald Trump chastised Zelensky in the Oval Office, appalling the West and delighting Moscow in the process.

Starmer told the BBC that Britain would work with France, and “possibly one or two others,” on crafting a plan to stop the fighting in Ukraine, and then “discuss that plan with the United States.”

The process seems destined to rival the negotiation process that Trump’s administration opened with Russia last month, and suggests a tacit acceptance that bringing Trump and Zelensky to the negotiating table together could result in tensions combusting once more.

Zelensky enjoyed a heartfelt welcome from Starmer on Saturday that could not be more different than the reception he endured at the White House. King Charles has also accepted an invitation to meet Zelensky on Sunday.

Job seeker jailed for stealing from government offices

Court

A 36-year-old unemployed ex-convict, Foster Nyarko, has been sentenced to six years and one month in hard labor for stealing from two government institutions – the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Foster Nyarko pleaded guilty before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah and begged for mercy, promising that it would be his last offense. He cited his responsibility for a seven-year-old daughter as a reason for leniency.

However, the court ruled that keeping him away from his daughter was in her best interest, as children often learn from their parents’ actions.

Despite receiving multiple sentences, Foster Nyarko will serve a maximum of two years since the terms are to run concurrently.

Crimes at Government Offices

According to Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori Appiah, who led the prosecution, Foster Nyarko committed the first offense on December 4, 2024 at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment.

Posing as a job seeker interested in a cleaning position, he was directed to the Human Resource Director.

Instead, he proceeded to the second floor, where he found the office of Deputy Director Daniel Sakyi Asiedu unoccupied.

Seizing the opportunity, Nyarko stole an HP laptop worth GH¢24,745.00 and placed it in his backpack, and exited the building.

Investigations later revealed that he had sold the laptop to an unidentified buyer in Takoradi.

In a separate incident on October 22, 2024, Foster Nyarko struck at CHRAJ’s headquarters, again under false pretences.

Claiming he was following up on an application, he gained access to Room 15 of the Human Resource Department.

Finding the office empty, he stole a Samsung Galaxy A54 5G mobile phone valued at GH¢4,999.00 which belonged to Celis-Jane Nyadroh, a Principal Administrator.

The theft was captured on CCTV and Foster reported the incident to the Ministries Police Station.

After months of evading arrest, Nyarko was finally caught on January 30, 2025, while attempting another theft at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

During police interrogation, he admitted to stealing the phone. He was subsequently charged with unlawful entry and stealing, offenses contrary to Sections 152 and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Despite his plea for leniency, the court found him guilty and imposed the custodial sentence to deter future misconduct.

There are no stool lands in Dangme -Hiowe Gblaka Family

Simpim Aferdi Katamanso Yilagbeye I during a Q&A session

Simpim Aferdi Katamanso Yilagbeye I, the head of the Hiowe Gblaka Family of the Hiowe Seh in Doryumu in the Shai-Osudoku District, Greater Accra, says there are no stool lands in Dangme.

Given this, he said the Prampram and Shai Traditional Councils should not be lost in the thick of affairs and “jealous” of the Hiowe Gblaka Family.

Simpim Aferdi Katamanso Yilagbeye I, at a news conference at Doryumu on Friday, said the Hiowe Gblaka Family, legally, has truncated the erroneous views of the two Traditional Councils that some long-standing land boundary in dispute is a stool land.

“Their (Prampram and Shai Traditional Councils) hold on that boundary has legally slipped through their fingers, and their dependent and reliance on the Jackson Report for their claim has fallen flat,” Simpim Aferdi Katamanso Yilagbeye I told a section of the media.

He corrected the media that they are not called ‘Shai’ but ‘Seh’, explaining that the two are not the same.

Background

To stop the years of violent clashes, arrests and legal battles between the Prampram and Shai Traditional Areas over a long-standing boundary dispute, the heads of the two met a fortnight ago to resolve their issues.

The resolution, based on the Jackson Report, a Colonial-era document that provides historical clarity on land ownership in the area was facilitated by the Lands Commission and key elders from both sides.

The officials assured landowners affected by the demarcation process that they would not lose their lands. The parties reaffirmed the commitment of their traditional authorities to ensuring lasting peace and effective land management.

Present at the presser were Evans TN Nartey, Administrator, Prampram Customary Land Secretariat, Nene Ayiku Obleh Adebontenya IV, Divisional Chief of Kley and family heads from Olowe, Kley, Annor We and Lakpleh Divisions, demonstrating a unified front in the implementation of the agreement.

How to Listen to Your Body

0

Your body will often let you know if something suddenly goes drastically wrong. If something feels really off — like changes in being able to see, talk, walk, think clearly, or communicate, or having chest pain or shortness of breath — call 911. Don’t wait to see if you feel better. If it’s a stroke or heart attack, you need medical care right away.

Do You Need A Rest Day?

You don’t feel up to your regular workout. Should you pass? Tune in. Do you feel sore and worn out? Then you may need a lighter day. Or are you feeling tempted by your favorite show and your couch? How often you need rest depends on how hard you work out and what you do, and how you feel. If you’re not in pain, some movement is usually a good idea. A certified personal trainer can give you a training schedule that builds in recovery.

Is It Aging?

Some pain from wear and tear on your body is natural as you get older. Or you may notice that you’re not as flexible or strong as you used to be. The cushion at your joints and between the bones of your spine can start to break down. That could hurt and limit your movement. It helps to stay active, but when the pain doesn’t go away, your doctor might suggest a specialized “rehab” exercise routine to manage it.

Your Heart Rate Feels Off

You may feel lightheaded or dizzy with a racing, fluttering, or slowed pulse. If it lasts more than a few minutes or happens often, it might be from an illness or heart rhythm problem. Serious chest pain or trouble walking or speaking could mean a heart attack or stroke: Get to a hospital. An easy workout that suddenly seems hard and raises your pulse longer than usual may mean you’re overdoing it. Talk to a doctor about your symptoms.

Burned Out?

If you’re under stress that doesn’t let up, it can really get to you. You might notice that you’ve got less energy, headaches, an upset stomach, or other symptoms. Little things that you used to be able to shake off now bother you. These may be signs that you need to step up your stress management. What helps: exercise, positive relationships, meditation, smiling and laughing, and taking breaks from whatever causes you stress.

Mood Matters

Everyone has times when they feel down or anxious. But if you have depression or anxiety, those conditions can affect you physically as well as emotionally. You might notice that you cry a lot, isolate yourself, avoid doing things you normally love, have tense muscles, find it hard to concentrate, and sleep or eat more (or less) than normal. These are cues to talk to your doctor or a therapist to get help.

Appetite Changes

If you find that you eat a lot more, or a lot less, than usual, your body may be telling you that something isn’t quite right. It might be that you’re stressed out and are eating for emotional reasons. Or you might be depressed, and that’s dimmed your appetite. Some conditions, and even getting older, can also affect your appetite. It helps to be active and to favor flavorful, healthy food. If that doesn’t help, let your doctor know.

Injured or Just Sore?

A good gym session might make you mildly sore. But muscle pain that lasts several days could mean you overdid it — too much, too soon, or too hard — and have an injury. It’s best to wait until you’re back to normal to exercise again. So to stay healthy and keep to your routine, keep your intensity low and ramp up slowly.

Put on the Brakes

When you’re working out and your body screams “Stop!” listen. You may have broken a bone or torn a muscle or ligament. Try RICE:

  • Rest: Lie down and keep your weight off
  • Ice: 20 minutes at a time
  • Compression: Use a bandage for support
  • Elevation: Raise the hurt area (above your nose if you can)

Go to an ER or clinic if the pain is intense, it worsens, or you also have fever and chills. Call your doctor if it still hurts after 2 weeks.

Sleep Problems

Do you often toss and turn at night? Your body may be saying you need more sleep. First, try simple things, like going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, sleeping at least 7 hours a night. Keep your bedroom cool, and don’t watch TV or check your phone after bedtime. Being active during the day also helps. Avoid big meals and caffeine too close to bedtime. If that’s not enough, ask your doctor what the problem might be.

Pain That Doesn’t Quit

Are you noticing twinges and aches that happen over and over again? Don’t try to cover them up with medication or just “work through” them. You want to stop a minor ache from turning into a major problem that won’t go away. A doctor can help you pinpoint the source of the problem and treat it. You might need physical therapy so you start to feel it better.

A New Lump

Whether you’re a woman with a lump in their breast or a young man with a testicular lump, these are good things to get a doctor to check. You really can’t tell what they are, just based on how they feel. They aren’t always cancer, but it’s important to find out about new lumps for sure, and as soon as possible, in case you need treatment.

A Bad Reaction

Maybe you think you’re starting to get allergies to pollen, or that your gut can’t handle lactose or gluten. Or you notice that your skin is itchy and dry all of a sudden. These are things that are easy to jump to conclusions about. But it’s a good idea to see a doctor to find out if you really do have an allergy or if something else is causing your symptoms. That way, you’ll know what you need to avoid and how to treat your triggers.

Trust Yourself

You know yourself inside and out: how you feel on a good day, what feels “off,” when you’re sick, when you’re rested. It can all show up in your body, from a clenched jaw from stress, to a sore calf muscle after hiking all weekend, to something serious. Sometimes it’s hard to tell on your own, so never hesitate to ask your doctor, who’s there to help.

‘Stay focused’- Andre Ayew advises young players on how to deal with online abuse

0
Andre Ayew, Havre

Ghana and Le Havre star Andre Ayew has opened up on dealing with abuse from social media, having enjoyed a long career despite unfair criticisms online.

The 35-year-old netted his fourth goal of the season to inspire Le Havre to a thrilling victory over RC Lens on Saturday.

Andre Ayew also delivered an assists in the 4-3 win at Stade Bollaert-Delelis to lift Lens to 16th-place on the table.

“It’s all about you, focusing on your job and what you have to do. Everything has a good and bad side, so sometimes, try to understand where the criticism comes from – it can help you,” Ayew told the BBC.

“We play football for the people, especially in our country and continent, where we love the game so much. But today, if somebody is frustrated, they can just write anything (online). That’s where we need to be strong and not pay attention to that sort of thing,” he added.

“You want to make the people happy, but when it’s just nonsense talk, push it away. With my experience, I just feel that you need to stay focused and listen to what the coaches, the analysts and the staff have to tell you. That’s where the real information comes from.”
