The Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has offered admission to a total of 10,667 new students to pursue various programmes of studies for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The freshers comprise 6,946 males representing 65.2 percent and 3,721 females (34.8 percent).

A section of the matriculants

Professor Gabriel Dwomoh, the Vice-Chancellor, who announced this last Friday at the 33rd Matriculation ceremony in Kumasi, said the number involved 10,339 undergraduates, 259 postgraduates and 69 international students for this year.

Prof Dwomoh reminded the students that the matriculation oath signified a contract between the students and the University and that breaking such commitment could jeopardize their academic progression.

He said the institution, as a leading Technical University in Ghana, maintains high academic standards and would not compromise the goals to achieve excellence.

The Vice-Chancellor advised the students to be responsible and build useful networks in positioning themselves to higher academic accomplishments.

Prof. Dwomoh admonished the students to use social media wisely, describing the space as a “hydra-headed monster” which has the tendency to shift students focus from the goal for which they were in school.

“While we concede that social media is a very useful avenue for information, it should be borne in mind that by the same token, it could also be a potent recipe for brewing misinformation and disinformation.

Reasons To Start Chewing Gum

0

Chewing gum has been used since ancient times. The Greeks took sap from the mastic tree and chewed it. But today, gum is made synthetically and packaged for mass sale.

Dental Considerations for Chewing Gum

If it has sugar, your chewing gum may raise your risk of tooth decay. The bacteria in your mouth metabolize sucralose and other carbohydrates. This can erode the enamel layer on the outside of your teeth.

But chewing gum with sugar once in a while doesn’t pose major health risks, especially if you have good oral hygiene.

Sugar-free gum has less than 0.5 grams of sugars per serving and uses alternative sweeteners. Gum labels may mention sweeteners like:

  • Acesulfame-K
  • Aspartame
  • Neotame
  • Saccharin
  • Sucralose
  • Erythritol
  • Isomalt
  • Maltitol
  • Mannitol
  • Sorbitol‌
  • Xylitol

If your gum uses certain flavorings like citric acid, it may lower plaque buildup in your mouth. But keep in mind that if the gum also has sugar, the positive effects may be canceled out.

Chewing triggers your mouth to make more saliva. This protects your mouth from decay and erosion because saliva acts as a buffer for your teeth. More saliva may carry away bacteria and acid that build up on your teeth.

Health Benefits of Chewing Gum

The benefits of chewing gum don’t stop in your mouth. More saliva may help balance acids in your esophagus, easing symptoms of acid reflux.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is when stomach acid flows back into the tube that connects your mouth and stomach. Laryngopharyngeal reflux is when stomach acid goes up your esophagus to your throat.‌

Gum may also help with dry mouth, at least for a short time. But as with reflux, it’s not a cure.‌

Other health benefits of chewing gum include:

  • Burning calories. You may burn 11 calories per hour that you chew gum. Over time, these add up.
  • Improving your memory. Chewing gum boosts blood flow to your brain, which may help improve your memory.
  • Fighting sleepiness. If you feel tired, chew some gum to stay alert.
  • Eliminating nausea. If you feel sick, the saliva production from chewing gum may help you feel better. This is especially true for motion sickness and morning sickness during pregnancy.

How to Choose Chewing Gum

Look for a seal of approval from the American Dental Association (ADA). These gums are verified by a panel of scientists who review the ingredients.‌

ADA-approved gums are sugar-free and have less of a risk to your teeth. Studies show that these gums are safe to use when you have cavities and will not make cavities worse.‌‌

But the ADA seal does not mean that chewing gum can replace regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings.‌

If you’re looking for something else to chew on, xanthan gum may be a good option. It’s a microbial polysaccharide that has a similar chewy consistency.

Xanthan gum is a common food additive to improve texture in foods. It may be flavorless, so check the label if you prefer flavorings.

Taking Care of Your Teeth

Take care to clean your teeth well after eating or chewing gum:

  • Brush twice per day.
  • Make sure to brush all around your teeth from different angles, using gentle pressure.
  • Use dental floss to reach tight spaces and get between your teeth and gums.
  • Don’t skip any spaces, no matter how small. Bacteria are more prone to build up in small spaces that aren’t easy to reach.
  • Try a water flosser if you have trouble with regular floss.
  • Avoid hard foods and things like seeds that may get stuck in your teeth.‌
  • Have regular dental cleanings.

Modric scores stunning goal to help Real Madrid beat Girona

Luka Modric

Luka Modric scored a stunning goal to help send Real Madrid end a run of three games without a win, against a battling Girona. With England midfielder Jude Bellingham watching on from the stands after receiving a red card in the draw with Osasuna, Modric opened the scoring by controlling the ball on his chest and smashing a half-volley past Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from 25 yards.

Vinicius Junior wrapped up the three points with a composed finish after being played through on goal by Kylian Mbappe in the 83rd minute.

Before Modric’s wonderful strike, former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek forced Real keeper Thibaut Courtois into a fine one-handed save after he latched on to Arnaut Danjuma’s flick.

In the second half, Lucas Vazquez had Gazzaniga desperately diving across his goal but his powerful strike drifted inches wide of the post.

Two minutes later, Vinicius collected the ball on the left, drifted into the centre and thundered a shot off the bar, before he sealed victory with his late strike.

Newcastle hold on to beat Nottingham Forest in thriller

Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak scored his 50th Premier League goal as a rampant first-half performance from Newcastle United helped them beat Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park.

Forest took an early lead through Callum Hudson-Odoi before Newcastle grabbed control of the game with four goals in 11 frantic first-half minutes to go in 4-1 up at half-time.

Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy scored in quick succession to stun Forest, before Isak struck twice in the space of two minutes.

Isak’s second – his 19th goal of the season – saw him reach the 50-goal mark in just 76 Premier League appearances, quicker than all-but six players in the competition’s history.

Nikola Milenkovic took advantage of a defensive lapse to pull a goal back for Forest, before substitute Ryan Yates set up a nervy finish with a close-range goal following a corner in the 90th minute.

But Newcastle held on for a victory that moves them up to fifth in the table, which will likely be enough to qualify for the Champions League, and puts them within three points of Forest in third.

Newcastle really needed a win to boost their hopes of a top-five finish and arrest a slide that was threatening to derail their season.

Howe’s side came into the game with three league defeats in four, and risked losing three consecutive home games in the Premier League for the first time since 2021.

Man United stage late comeback to draw with Everton

Manuel Ugarte celebrates his equaliser

Manchester United staged a late comeback before being saved by VAR as they avoided plunging deeper into crisis with a dramatic draw at Everton.

Everton’s resurgence under returning manager David Moyes was poised to continue as the hosts exerted total domination in the first 45 minutes to establish a deserved two-goal lead at Goodison Park.

They exposed every United flaw in that opening half, Beto turning in his fifth goal under Moyes in the 19th minute after a goalmouth scramble before Abdoulaye Doucoure headed them two ahead.

The second Everton goal was a desperate moment for United defender Harry Maguire, who failed to react with any urgency after Andre Onana saved Jack Harrison’s shot, allowing Doucoure to rise above him to head home.

Everton remained in control until Bruno Fernandes steered home a free-kick with 18 minutes left, and Manuel Ugarte then drove in powerfully eight minutes later to draw United level.

United then survived a late scare when referee Andrew Madley awarded a penalty as Ashley Young went down under Maguire’s challenge, with Matthijs de Ligt also tugging the Everton veteran, but the decision was reversed after a video assistant referee check.

West Ham end four-match winless run with win against Arsenal

Jarrod Bowen scores fo West Ham

Arsenal missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool as West Ham ended a four-match winless run with a stunning victory at Emirates Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen got the winner against a Gunners side who later had Myles Lewis-Skelly sent off.

Victory would have moved Arsenal to within five points of Arne Slot’s team, who visit champions Manchester City on Sunday, but they struggled badly against a Hammers side who defended magnificently and created the better openings over the 90 minutes.

Bowen started and finished the move that led to the winner late in the first half, collecting a loose ball on the edge of his own box and feeding Aaron Wan-Bissaka before stooping low to nod the full-back’s cross into the net for his 50th Premier League goal.

It was the first time Arsenal had trailed in a home Premier league game at half-time this season, but they showed no discernible improvement after the interval – despite pinning West Ham back for much of the second period.

Leandro Trossard had a low shot saved by the feet of Alphonse Areola, but the Gunners’ hopes of a route back into the contest were dealt a major blow when Lewis-Skelly was sent off for a professional foul on Mohammed Kudus near the halfway line.

Aston Villa come from behind to beat Chelsea

Aston Villa players jubilate

New signings Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford combined twice as Aston Villa came from behind to beat Chelsea, grabbing a valuable three points in their push for European qualification.

An excellent piece of play out wide from Pedro Neto fashioned a ninth-minute opener for Chelsea from Enzo Fernandez to turn it past Emiliano Martinez.

But Chelsea did not seize control and half-time introduction Rashford – who was initially ruled offside before the video assistant referee system overturned the decision – helped Aston Villa to level when he tapped a Matty Cash delivery across the six-yard box for Asensio to bundle home.

After once again being fed by fellow mid-season recruit Rashford, Asensio then netted a 90th-minute winner thanks to a huge mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who allowed a first-time strike to slide underneath him.

Chelsea’s mishaps in defence and failure to close down gaps gave Villa ample chances to find a way back into the game despite the visitors going ahead early.

The momentum was firmly in the hosts’ favour for much of the first half, producing regular good passing routines to get in behind the visitors’ back line, but they struggled for a clinical edge.

Asensio’s late winner means Villa rise to seventh in the table, a point behind Chelsea and two points off fourth-placed Manchester City.

You can’t intimidate me –Wike dares PDP NWC

0
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike on Saturday dared the National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, challenging their stance on the South-South zonal congress.

DAILY POST reports that members of the PDP, who are loyal to Wike, conducted the South-South PDP Zonal Congress on Saturday in Calabar, Cross River State, despite a court order against the exercise.

Recall that a High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, had issued an interim injunction preventing the zonal congress from taking place.

But Wike and those in his camp, including a former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Donald Duke, participated and voted at the Congress.

However, the party’s NWC distanced itself from the zonal congress, saying PDP is not in any way involved in the “said gathering in Calabar”.

The main opposition party insisted it has not conducted its South-South Zonal Congress.

However, while presenting a goodwill message at the congress, the former Rivers State Governor said there has never been a congress or convention where all delegates participated.

The FCT Minister charged delegates at the Congress to elect officials who will defend and protect the party.

He said, “The South-South Zone is the strongest zone of the PDP in Nigeria. It has always been and will always be. There is no part of the constitution that says congress should be postponed because of a wedding or travelling.

“There has never been a congress where every delegate was present. I want to assure you that this is the final zonal congress of the South-South Zone. After the election today, no other zonal congress will hold”.

Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta and APC chairman Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje

The Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta, has cautioned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje against any attempts to allow the current Chairman of the APC in Kano to continue in office for a fourth term.

The Minister was quoted to have warned that any attempt to gives the current Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas another chance, would lead to serious crises in the party.

The Minister issued the threats at a caucus meeting in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano, on Saturday.

The Minister said, “we will not take it lightly with anybody trying to return Abdullahi Abbas to office after the expiration of his tenure, because it violates the constitution of the party.

“We would not accept the Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas to be imposed on us for the fourth term, this will surely result in us decamping immediately from the party”, he threatened.

“We are saying loud and clear, I swear if Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance all of us will decamp from the party and APC will crash and lose 2027, this is my message to anybody who cares to listen”.

Yusuf Atta alleged that the arrogant and misguided disposition of Abdullahi Abbas as state Chairman is among the many negative tendencies that crippled and made the party to lost power in 2023.

“And up till today, the same person has not changed, therefore we are strongly warning that in any case and anyhow Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance everyone should consider the Party losing 2027.

“We were given good training by our parents and we know who God is, we never dare him but this man doesnt know that, therefore with him as Chairman APC is a foregone party in Kano.”

Atta said in 2023, APC won the governorship contest with Gawuna and Sule Garo as candidate and deputy but that Anti God remarks of Abdullahi Abbas truncated their victory.
