AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has organized Safety Awards and Motivation Night for its workers as a way of motivating them to work.

The programme, which was part of weeklong activities to mark safety on the mine saw over 60 employees and 40 companies and contractors taking various prizes for excelling in their various fields of operation.

Joe Steve Annan explaining the essence of the programme to newsmen

Speaking to newsmen on the essence of the night’s programme, Mr. Joe Steve Annan, Senior Manager Health and Safety of AGA, noted that management of the company needed to motivate the entire workforce for them to work safely, so that at the end of the day they will go home to meet their families, hence the observation of the Safety Week.

He described safety as the fulcrum around which all operations and activities revolve and stated that if one privatises safety, one ensures workers safety.

Mr. Annan said safety on the mine has improved significantly, but was quick to remark, “but we are not complacent, we are still doing what we need to do.”

He described the entire safety programme as unprecedented, explaining that devoting a whole week for a safety programme has never happened in any mining company in Ghana.

The Managing Director of AGA, Mr. Samuel Pobee, on his part congratulated all awardees during the programme.

He noted that Safety was not about processes and procedures, but about human lives and that “whatever we do is about making sure that we all go back home safely to our loved ones and our families.

“We have started our journey to make Obuasi great again and Obuasi cannot be great without safety,” he stated.

The Managing Director further said “we want to deliver safe ounces and that is the aim. If by the end of the year we have achieved our plan it has to be done safely.”

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Sunday said its operatives thwarted what it described as a desperate attempt by a woman to export large consignments of cocaine to Iran at the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State.

In a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, made available to Channels Television on Sunday, the agency said the consignments were concealed in the private part, stomach, and false bottom of the handbag of the suspect, identified as Ihensekhien Miracle Obehi.

Babafemi said that the suspect, who was dressed in a hijab to beat security checks, was intercepted at the departure hall of the Port Harcourt airport on Sunday, May 3, 2025, while trying to board a Qatar Airline flight to Iran via Doha, following credible intelligence.

He disclosed that during a search on Obehi, she was found to have inserted three wraps of cocaine in her private part, and two large parcels hidden in false compartments of her handbag, while she swallowed 67 pellets of the Class A drug.

As a result, she was said to have been placed under excretion observation and after four excretions that lasted days, she expelled the 67 wraps of the substance in her stomach.

According to Babafemi, Obehi claimed she was to swallow 70 pellets of cocaine, but after ingesting 67 pieces, she could no longer swallow the remaining three and decided to insert them into her private part.

The total weight of the three consignments hidden in different parts of her body comes to 2.523 kilograms, according to the NDLEA.

Atiku Slams EFCC Over Detention Of Ex-Lawmaker

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the detention of a former member of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Kazaure.

In a tweet on his official X handle, the Peoples Democratic Party’s elder statesman described Kazaure’s detention as a disregard for due process.

He said, “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has once again plunged headlong into its well-worn pattern of lawlessness, arresting and detaining citizens with brazen disregard for due process and without offering any justification for its actions.”

He cited the case of the VeryDarkMan, which he said was released only after public outrage.

“We witnessed this same abuse in the unlawful arrest and detention of Mr. Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, whose release was only secured after massive public outrage and pressure.

“Now, the EFCC has targeted Hon. Muhammad Kazaure, a former member of the House of Representatives and an unapologetic critic of the gross misgovernance and failings of the Tinubu administration.

“Abducted in Kano and whisked away to Abuja, Kazaure is presently being held incommunicado, with no formal charge or explanation offered to his family, legal team, or the Nigerian people.

“Let it be stated without equivocation: even if there were legitimate grounds for arresting any citizen, such action must adhere strictly to the rule of law. The EFCC is duty-bound to publicly disclose the reasons for any arrest and must not detain individuals indefinitely under the guise of investigation.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is unequivocal on this matter—every detainee must be promptly charged to court or released. By once again trampling on the fundamental rights of a Nigerian citizen, the EFCC is entrenching itself deeper into the mire of impunity and constitutional delinquency.

“The Nigerian people are watching. And history will not forget.”

Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan

Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has dismissed any intention of returning to Aso Rock Villa in 2027.
She has declared her support for First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and her husband ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She made known while honouring Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu and the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, during the Women Icon Leader of the Year award ceremony hosted by Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday night.

During her speech, Jonathan took a moment to express her admiration for Tinubu-Ojo and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the First Lady.

She said, “I was supposed to call her first, but I saved her for last: the daughter of our wonderful President, the President of Nigeria, the one and only we believe in, President Bola Tinubu. Iyaloja, thank you for standing with women because these are your women. Carry them along; they are with you.”

Addressing the crowd, Jonathan added, “All the way, we are with you. No shaking. We will follow. Direct us, and we will follow. Because there is only one president at a time. We don’t have two presidents. I am outspoken, if I don’t like something, I will say it. But if I like something, I die for it.”

“I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back, so that the country can move forward.”

Jonathan also recalled how Remi Tinubu and the president supported her and her husband when they contested for the presidency in 2011.

She insisted that rather than return to Aso Rock, she would support the First Lady and her husband.

Nigeria’s livestock sector contributing over 5% to the nation’s GDP

Nigeria livestock sector

Nigeria’s livestock sector, contributing over 5% to the nation’s GDP, is central to the livelihoods of millions.

Yet, persistent challenges—ranging from inefficient grazing systems and disease outbreaks to market inaccessibility and frequent conflicts—continue to hamper its full potential. While emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT) offer powerful solutions, their adoption across the livestock value chain remains limited.
In response, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, in partnership with AI Collective has launched Hack4Livestock—a national hackathon designed to drive innovation and unlock tech-enabled transformation in Nigeria’s livestock sector.

As part of its strategic rollout, the Hack4Livestock organising team, including Willie Ignatius, Managing Director, Publica AI; Prof. Demo Kalla, Member, Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee; and Mrs. Maryam Abdullahi, Project Manager, National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), recently visited two key stakeholders to deepen sectoral collaboration.

At the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Prof. Kalla emphasized the presidential focus on livestock reform and urged the Council to promote the hackathon across its networks. “The President’s heartbeat is on livestock,” he noted, highlighting the initiative’s goal of attracting young, talented Nigerians with practical ideas for transforming the sector.

He also requested VCN’s endorsement and participation in the closing ceremony, describing the program as a government-private sector-academia collaboration—one in which VCN is the first professional body engaged.

Minister hints of intervention against mining in river bodies

0
Alhaji Yussif Sulemana, the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources

Alhaji Yussif Sulemana, the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has revealed government’s plans to initiate interventions against mining on river bodies in Ghana, especially the Black Volta River.

He said the government had planned to introduce the “Blue Water Guard” initiative to recruit and train people living along the Black Volta River to guard against illegal activities, such as illegal mining in the river.

Alhaji Sulemana, also the Member of Parliament for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency, revealed this in Wa at the weekend, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the inauguration and swearing-in of the Upper West Regional Lands Commission Board.

He said President John Dramani Mahama’s government had declared war against mining on river bodies and in the forest and had put in stringent measures to protect those resources.

“Let me announce that very soon people who are living around the boundaries of the Black Volta, we are going to employ them into what we call the Blue Water Initiative.

Their responsibility is to trigger or give us notification that there are people on the water body destroying it, and then we now get the appropriate law-enforcement agencies to go flush them out”, he explained.

Alhaji Sulemana indicated that the initiative would commence in the Upper West Region through to the Savanna Region and all communities along the Black Volta River.

Illegal miming activities on the Black Volta River along the Wa West District in the Upper West Region had raised serious concerns among well-meaning Ghanaians as the river served as a source of water for many people, including people in Wa.

Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Member of Parliament for the Wa West Constituency recently toured some communities along the river in the constituency, to ascertain the level of destruction the illegal mining had caused to the river.

The Upper West Regional Police Command also recently arrested seven individuals for mining on the Black Volta River at Kyeatanga, a community near Dorimon, in the Wa West District.

Alhaji Sulemana, however, said people who were engaged in dry land illegal mining would be organised into cooperatives, trained and supported to engage in responsible “medium scale” mining and to reclaim the lands after the mining.

“For those who are on dry land, the approach is that let’s sit with them, let’s regularise their activities, let’s support them with technology, let’s support them with the necessary funds so that they are able to identify where exactly the gold deposit is”, the Minister explained.

Bagbin calls for investment in NHIS to support Lupus patients

0

Mr Alban S. K. Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has called for increased investment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to enhance healthcare delivery, particularly for patients battling Lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Mr Bagbin emphasised the urgent need to integrate Lupus care into the NHIS, highlighting that many patients face significant financial burdens due to the high cost of treatment.

The Speaker made the call during a meeting with the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation to mark the World Lupus Day observance, which fell on May 10, 2025 at the Parliament House in Accra.

At least five million people worldwide have Lupus, a chronic auto-immune disease that can damage any organ or tissue from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.

World Lupus Day was first observed in 2004 and several special events were held to highlight its importance.

Most significant was the issuing of the inaugural World Lupus Day Proclamation, recognising this historic day and demonstrating concern for the needs of millions of individuals globally.

Ghana ratified the World Lupus proclamation in 2017.

He said strengthening the NHIS to cover such chronic conditions would alleviate the economic strain on affected individuals and improve their access to necessary medical care.

Mrs Emma Halm Danso, Executive Director, the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation, echoed the Speaker’s sentiments, saying lupus was often misunderstood and under-diagnosed in Ghana.

Mrs Halm Danso pointed out that many patients suffered from misdiagnosis and delayed treatment, leading to severe health complications.

She called for the establishment of specialized lupus clinics and increased public education to raise awareness about the disease.

The Foundation also urged the government to consider covering lupus medications under the NHIS, as the current out-of-pocket expenses were prohibitively high for many patients.

It is a duly registered non-profit organization that is committed to inspiring hope in people affected directly or indirectly by autoimmune diseases.

She said, “We demonstrate our commitment through advocacy, raising awareness, education and counseling, as well as fundraising to provide support services such as medical assistance among others for people with autoimmune diseases.”

Chair of Defence Committee denies Adu Boahene’s ‘bribery’ allegation

0
James-Agalga - chairman of Defence and Interior committee

Mr James Agalga, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, has categorically denied allegations of bribery made by Mr Kwabena Adu Boahene, former Director General of the National Signals Bureau.

Mr Adu Boahene’s lawyer had alleged that GH¢ 960,000 was paid to the Committee as Members of Parliament (MPs) allowance to facilitate the enactment of the National Signals Bureau Act, 2020 (Act 1040).

In a statement released by Mr Agalga on Sunday and issued to the Ghana News Agency, it described the allegations as “baseless and an act of desperation.”

It emphasised that Mr Adu Boahene could not have facilitated the passage of the Act by paying monies to the Committee, as he was not involved in the process.

“The National Signals Bureau, the agency Adu Boahene subsequently headed as Director General, was non-existent prior to the passage of Act 1040.

“It is not possible that he could have facilitated the passage of the said Act by paying monies to the Defence and Interior Committee,” the statement said.

It explained that the Committee dealt with the Minister for National Security, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, who was the principal sponsor of the Bill and Mr. Joshua Kyeremeh, the National Security Coordinator, during the enactment of Act 1040.

“Adu Boahene became Director General long after the passage of Act 1040 and could not, therefore, have drawn monies from the accounts of an agency which was not even in existence,” it added.

The statement quoted Mr Agalga as saying, “I only got to know Adu Boahene sometime in April or May 2021, when he appeared for the first time before our committee and was introduced to us by Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah, the Minister for National Security at the time, as the newly appointed Director General of the National Signals Bureau, long after the passage of Act 1040.”

We’ll expand frontiers of tourism in Cape Coast -New Mayor assures

0
Mr. George Justice Arthur

The new Metropolitan Chief Executive of Cape Coast, Mr George Justice Arthur, says the expansion of the frontiers of tourism in Cape Coast as one of his topmost priorities.

He has, therefore, promised to focus attention on developing the numerous tourism potential sites in the ancient city to modern standards and harness same to improve Cape Coast’s image as a tourists’ destination.

This, he explained, would help the local assembly to rake in badly needed funds to support not just the development of Cape Coast, but also create opportunities for the local people.

This came to light during Mayor George Justice Arthur’s maiden engagement with the media to outline his vision, which among others, aimed to transform the metropolis into a thriving, sustainable and culturally vibrant coastal city.

He mentioned historic sites, such as the famous Cape Coast Castle, forts, as well as the beautiful beaches along the coast, as some of the ancient city’s tourism potentials that could become income generating channels.

To achieve this and bolster the tourism activities in Cape Coast, the Mayor disclosed that a strategic world class tourists’ information and support centre would be developed.

To realise the relevance of the above, he explained that the Assembly would map and profile all tourist attraction sites in the city and subsequently host them on a website, where it could be accessed by both local and international tourists.

He gave an assurance that, under him, the Assembly would partner the traditional authorities to organize annual cultural festivals and other unique programmes to attract tourists to celebrate the city’s heritage.

He mentioned education, health, economic development, private sector development, agricultural development, social protection, road and transport, climate change and environment sustainability as other areas of priority.

Sports and recreational development, security, revenue mobilization, interaction with the general public, creative arts were all mentioned as some of his areas of priority.

Education

He was, however, worried that though the city of Cape Coast resonated with quality education, children from Cape Coast struggled to gain admission to the known elite schools in the town. He acknowledged that the reasons were multifaceted, but gave an assurance that under his leadership, programmes would be initiated to strengthen the basic schools in the metropolis, which served as precursor to the High Schools.

He promised to Expand Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training to bridge the digital divide and enhance learning opportunities in line with national policies.

“Moreover, the Assembly will collaborate with the Members of Parliament;  Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan of Cape Coast South and Dr. Kwamena Mintah Nyarku for Cape Coast North; to provide scholarships and academic support for needy, but brilliant students,” he said.

HEALTH

Highlighting his vision for the health sector, he promised to champion the renovation of existing health facilities such as the Metro Hospital at Bakaano and upgrade others to reflect the desired standard of a Metropolitan area.

“The Assembly under my leadership will work with the Health Department to fully operationalise all demarcated CHPS compounds in order to provide adequate community outreach services.

“This will contribute to the City’s effort to deliver primary and preventive healthcare service. We will also liaise with health authorities to look at the possibility of establishing a Pediatric (children) facility to cater for the health needs of our children”.
