Ancelotti leaves Real Madrid to coach Brazil

Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti will leave the Spanish club at the end of the season to become the new national team coach of Brazil.

The 65-year-old Italian will officially take charge of Brazil on 26 May following the conclusion of the La Liga season.

He leaves the Santiago Bernabeu as one of the club’s most successful managers.

Ancelotti won 15 trophies across two spells as Real manager and last season led Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga double.

However, his exit from Real comes after Sunday’s El Clasico defeat left Real seven points behind leaders Barcelona with three games remaining.

Barring a spectacular collapse from Barcelona, that result all but confirmed that Real will end the season without a trophy for the first time in four years.

A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said Ancelotti was a “legend of the game” and acknowledged the significance of a foreign coach taking charge of the team.

“This landmark moment sees the coming together of two icons — the only five-time Fifa World Cup champions, and a coach with an unmatched record across Europe’s elite competitions,” the CBF said.

“The CBF warmly welcomes Mr Ancelotti and looks forward to a new era of success under his leadership.”

In their statement, the CBF thanked Real president Florentino Perez for “facilitating the coach’s release during his contract term” and also acknowledged Brazilian businessman Diego Fernandes for his role in the deal.

Ancelotti’s current deal with Real was set to expire in June 2026.

Girona travel away to face relegated Real Valladolid

0
Miguel Gutierrez, Girona

Girona‘s battle to remain in Spain’s top flight will continue on Tuesday evening, when they make the trip to basement side Real Valladolid.

The visitors are currently 15th in the La Liga table, four points outside of the relegation zone with three games left, while Real Valladolid will play in the Segunda Division next season after a disastrous campaign.

Real Valladolid suffered a ninth straight La Liga defeat on Saturday, going down 2-1 to Mallorca, and it is now just 16 points from their 35 league matches this season, which has left them rooted to the bottom of the division.

Real Valladolid are comfortably the lowest goalscorers in the division, only finding the back of the net on 26 occasions, while they have incredibly conceded 85 times, with their defensive record staggering.

Alvaro Rubio‘s side will take on Alaves and Leganes in their final two league games of the season, so the relegated outfit will have a huge say in terms of which teams join them in the Segunda Division next term.

Girona, meanwhile, will enter the match off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Villarreal, and the Catalan outfit are not yet out of the woods when it comes to the relegation battle in the final stages of the season.

Real Valladolid’s last couple of performances have been much better, but they are such a difficult side to back due to their struggles this season, and we fancy Girona to collect a gigantic three points in their battle to stay above the relegation zone.

Sevilla host relegation threatened Las Palmas

Dodi Lukebakio, Sevilla

Estadio Ramon will play host to a gigantic match in Spain’s top flight on Tuesday evening, as 16th-placed Sevilla host 19th-placed Las Palmas.

Sevilla are only four points outside of the relegation zone in the La Liga table with three games left, while Las Palmas sit three points behind 17th-placed Alaves, so both teams will be fired-up to collect all three points on Tuesday night.

Sevilla finished 14th in La Liga last season, which proved to be their worst final spot in Spain’s top flight since being relegated back in 2000, but there is a strong chance they will be even lower come the end of this campaign.

Indeed, a disastrous season has seen Los Nervionenses pick up just 38 points from 35 matches, which has left them only four points clear of 18th-placed Leganes with three games left, so relegation is still a major threat at this stage of proceedings. Sevilla will face Real Madrid and Villarreal in their final two league games of the season, so a defeat against Las Palmas would leave them in an incredibly vulnerable position in the table heading into the final straight.

Both managers will be wary of what a defeat would equal in this match, which means that a cagey affair could be on the cards; it is difficult to back either with any real confidence considering their form, so we have had to settle on a share of the spoils.

Project directors, managers and stakeholders pose with Justmoh CEO and Prof. Gyampo

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has affirmed the John Mahama government’s commitment to ensuring the completion of the Boankra Inland Port project to enhance trade and logistics in Ghana.

Dr. Justice Amo – CEO of Justmosh Construction

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of  GSA, Professor Ransford Gyampo, who gave the assurance said in spite of the challenges encountered by similar projects, the government was committed to seeing the Boankra project through to its fruition.

The Boankra Integrated Logistics and Terminal (BILT) project is a flagship initiative designed to provide a comprehensive logistics and transportation hub in Ghana.

The Boankra Inland Port project is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s economy, providing a much-needed boost to trade and commerce.

Ongoing construction of structures at the site

The project, being executed by Justmoh Construction Limited, aims to reduce congestion at the Tema Port, improve efficiency in cargo handling and provide a one-stop logistics facility for importers, exporters and logistics service providers.

Prof. Gyampo, during a monthly site meeting at the Boankra Inland Port, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made so far.

He emphasised that the government is committed to addressing legitimate concerns about the project to ensure its completion on schedule.

The CEO’s assurance comes against the backdrop of Ghana’s chequered history of projects abandoned as a result of changes in government, a situation he believes has impaired the country’s development.

Prof. Gyampo on tour of the site during the visit

Prof. Gyampo stressed the need for Ghana to move beyond partisan politics when it comes to projects aimed at improving the country’s infrastructural base noting that such projects should be seen as national efforts towards a general developmental agenda and that such initiatives must transcend political divides.

The facility, on completion, will offer a range of services, including warehousing, container storage, and customs clearance, among others. The project is also expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the surrounding areas.

As a result, the Ghana Shippers Authority has been working closely with Contractors and Stakeholders to ensure that the project stays on track.

Prof. Gyampo noted that GSA’s collaboration with the contractors, Justmoh Construction Limited and stakeholders was crucial to the project’s success.

The Chief Executive of Justmoh Construction Limited, Dr Justice Amoh, who briefed the GSA CEO about the progress of the project appealed for timely financial disbursements from their client, the Ghana Shippers Authority.

He stated that the current financial constraints have been hindering the progress of the work.

Project Consultant Dr. J.B. Koranteng-Yorke noted that Phase One of the project was nearing completion.

According to him, the contractors would need to add some facilities to ensure that phase one meets international standards.

Mahama visits Veep Opoku-Agyemang in London

President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday visited Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who is recuperating in London.

The President, in a statement to mark this year’s International Mother’s Day, extended a special Mother’s Day greeting to his Vice President, whom he had the pleasure of visiting earlier on Sunday morning.

“She is taking a deserved rest after recovering from illness and looking forward to resuming her duties soon,” the statement said.

“To her and all Ghanaian mothers, I say Happy Mother’s Day,” President Mahama stated in the statement.

The President was accompanied by Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister of Finance and Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, Member of Parliament for Adaklu.

In a related development, Dr Freda Prempeh, the Founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF), has urged Ghanaians to help protect girls against cancers and related diseases, as the world celebrates this year’s International Mother’s Day.

UWF seeks to encourage and motivate indigenous and vulnerable women and girls to know their worth and to empower and well-position them to contribute to the development of their communities and the larger society.

As future mothers of the nation, Dr Prempeh said girls could grow to become healthier and responsible women, if they were protected against life-threatening diseases like cervical cancer.

She said the HPV vaccine against cancers had proven efficacious and medically healthy for girls, saying now that the nation had the vaccines, there was the need for families to encourage their girls to take the shots and protect themselves.
“It’s medically proven that the HPV vaccine can prevent cancers caused by a Human Papillomavirus infection including cervical cancer,” she stated.

Dr Prempeh, also the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency, indicated that as the nation celebrate “Mothers’ Day,” attention ought to be on tackling challenges impeding the holistic growth and development of girls to enable them to grow to become responsible adults in society.

She expressed regret that despite intensified public education and awareness creation, some socio-cultural, traditional and other religious beliefs still persisted and were inimical to the growth of women and girls.
Those beliefs, Dr Prempeh added, had contributed to early/forced marriage, widowhood rites as well as other worst forms of abuses against women and girls in parts of the country.

The former MP said girls ought to be supported enough to achieve higher education and to pursue their life careers to the optimum, urging more economic support for indigenous women to help build on their lives too.
Dr Prempeh said mothers ought to be supported and celebrated due to their essential role in the family, in putting food on the table and also facilitating the proper upbringing of children.

NDC members kick against alleged imposition of MCE for Asokore Mampong

Suleiman Bin Masud addressing the media

Aggrieved members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawasi Constituency in the Ashanti region have objected to the President’s nomination of one Ben Abdallah as the Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong.

Suleiman Bin Masud, Member of the Constituency Communication Team at a press conference, a day after the names of the nominee popped-up, stressed that the Branch Executives and grassroots of the party in the Constituency do not know Ben Abdalla.

Aggrieved NDC Supporters in a protest march

According to him, the nominee is not their choice and cautioned the appointing authorities and the leadership of the party against bringing more division into the party in the Constituency.

He stressed that the grassroots would not accept the nominee alleging that constituency Chairman, Faisal Dauda, was denied the opportunity because he opposed the Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Member of Parliament during the party’s primary hence the imposition of Ben Abdalla, the MPs choice.

According to him, the imposition of Ben Abdalla demonstrates that leadership did not reward loyalty to the party, but loyalty to an individual.

He indicated that it was Chairman Failsal’s tenure that Asawasi NDC got a huge margin in the general elections as a result of his dedication, loyalty and commitment.

He reiterated that failure to reverse the nomination of Abdalla would attract unending protests within the party in the Constituency, because the grassroots would not rest until the party leadership did the needful.

He called on all sympathisers of the party to join the crusade to ensure that the Constituency Chairman is nominated for the position of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong for his meritorious service to the party.

The communication team member expressed worry over how those within the NDC in the Constituency who did not support the MP during the primary are considered enemies.

Halt this Family Feud in the NPP!

Marriage is an institution of love and togetherness, going by the way God meant it to be, “Therefore, shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2: 24). The two becoming one flesh, means they must be together in love, in all things and at all times.

But unfortunately, differences do occur in marriage. It is how these issues are resolved that will determine whether the relationship would be strong. In Matthew 1: 18-24, Joseph faced a big challenge, when he found out that his wife, Mary, had taken seed, though he never laid with her. The laws of Moses mandates that she should be publicly shamed and stoned to death.

Joseph, however, would not want that to happen to Mary and decided to resolve this issue with a quiet divorce. With this decision not to harm the young lady, the angel of God visited him in a dream and told him all about Mary’s pregnancy. The rest is Sacred Scriptures.

Marriage we are told is not a bed of roses and even if it were, we should remember that roses have thorns.

The way husband and wife manage their union would determine how the family will be. If they resolve their differences, behind closed doors, out of sight and ears of their children, but come out with smiles, there will always be joy in the family. But if however, they always clash in the presence of their children, then there will be disunity and disorder in the family at all times.

Family feud, breaks up the family and a family feud has erupted in the New Patriotic Party, that could break the party apart. It is the feud between the Bawumia’s camp and the Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. This is very dangerous and it could adversely affect the party’s chances in the next elections.

Today, once an NPP member, holds a different opinion on Bawumia, then they are tagged pro-Kennedy and treated like Alan’s supporters were and are being treated. This is a complete nonsense and is unacceptable.

On pro-NPP platforms, today, even kids who only recently became matured enough to do politics, could talk down on their elders who share different views with them on Bawumia.

Out in the open, recently the NPP Bono regional chairman, Mr. Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye, has decided to use his time to descend on Kennedy Agyapong, spewing harsh words to tarnish, the former MP’s high earned reputation.

Abronye is pro-Bawumia and he seems to be doing everything possible to discredit Kennedy Agyapong.

Some of the things he and some pro-Bawumia people are saying is that Kennedy, joined the race for the flag bearer slot, just to destroy Alan’s chances. That is ridiculous to say. It is an insult to Alan and his followers. It is clear, everywhere that the one who messed up Alan’s opportunity to lead the NPP in 2024, was Bawumia.

Government and party machinery were used to fight that fine gentleman and there was no way, he would have won the primaries, even with the help of Kennedy Agyapong.

But why put this news across? Kennedy won in constituencies which were considered Alan’s stronghold and so the only way to turn the tables there in favour of Bawumia is to sow this seed of confusion in the mind of the party members and turn the minds of Alan’s people, against Kennedy to favour Bawumia.

To discredit Kennedy further, Abronye claimed that the Show-Down man, was a mere cab driver abroad and had nothing, when he came to Ghana. He added that Kennedy made his money through President Kufuor, and yet he did not show appreciation to the Gentle Giant.

Firstly, Abronye should know that Ghanaians doing menial jobs in first world countries can come home, very rich. In those countries, once you get a job, any job at all, and you are prudent in your spending, you can make it, whether you are a cab driver, refuse collector, etc.

Secondly, Abronye should know that people are aware of another attempt to impose Bawumia on the party and one way is to make all Alan supporters in the NPP view Kennedy Agyapong as the real enemy and dump him. That will not work, for NPP members are now very wise.

Having shed this view, I will want to advise the NPP leadership to stamp out, these open cross-fire attacks of members on members. Anyone who attacks a fellow NPP member in public must be severely punished, which should include a long-term suspension. A repeated performance should attract dismissal from the party, no matter who the person is. There should be no case of punishing some and covering some.

Both Kennedy Agyapong and Abronye should be warned to stop their exchange of words. Like good married couples, all differences between members should be settled “indoors,” making the outside world believe that there is peace, love and togetherness in the party. That is the only way, maturity will reign in the NPP.

That is the way to properly rebrand the party and make it, once more attractive to all Ghanaians.

Editorial: Mr President, Uncapping Of GETfund Is Good But …

0
Editorial

During the presentation of the 2025 budget Statement and Economic Policy of the John Mahama government to Parliament a few months ago, the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, told Ghanaians that GH¢3.5 billion had been allocated for the free secondary school education programme for the fiscal year.

“Mr Speaker, the overarching concern about free secondary education has been its quality and the absence of a dedicated source of funding. H.E. President John Mahama has resolved the funding challenge by uncapping the GETFund. This makes available dedicated funds for the full financing of free secondary education and free tertiary education for Persons with Disability (PWDs),” he stated.

Earlier in June 2024, the Executive Director for Eduwatch, an Education policy and research and advocacy organisation, Mr Kofi Asare, stated in a Facebook post that about GHC 32.7 billion was originally allocated to the education sector in the main 2024 budget. This included GHC 3.2 billion to GETFund.

At mid-year, he continued, an additional GHC 1 billion was added to GETFund’s initial allocation for 2024, increasing GETFund allocation to GHC 4.2 billion.

With this revision, he argued, GETFund was receiving 55% of the GETFund Levy accruals (GHC7.6 bn) due to its capping.

According to Kofi’s post at the time, the total revised education budget for 2024 was about          GHC 33.7 billion, which represented 3.3% of GDP, yet below the global benchmark of 4-6%. The above analysis by Kofi Asare clearly points to the fact that the capping of the GETfund did not help in the funding of education in the country.

It is upon the basis of this that The Chronicle welcomes the decision by the John Mahama government to uncap the GETfund and frees more resources to tackle the numerous problems confronting the education sector. But whilst commending the government for the reversal of the decision taken by the Akufo-Addo government, we are also not happy that the Annual Budget Funding (ABF) of the Petroleum revenue is no more going to be used to finance the free SHS. The financing of the latter is now going to rely solely on the GETfund.

Available information indicates that the government intend using this fund (ABF) to pursue the Big Push agenda, where targeted roads in the country will be re-constructed. This is certainly not a bad idea, but the government, in our view, should have sourced for funds from elsewhere for these mega projects instead of using money meant for the free SHS.

As argued by Kofi Asare during one of his recent media engagements, the GHS3.5 billion that have been allocated to Free SHS from the GETfund is meant for consumption – feeding the students. It does not include infrastructural development on the various campuses.

This means there will be huge gap when it comes to the financing of education in the country as the GETfund alone, despite being uncapped, cannot shoulder the problem.

Our understanding is that the payment of fees for the over 150,000 first year public university students as promised by the government is also going to come from the GETFUND. Payment of these fees will amount to billions of Ghana cedis.

Again this is going into consumption and has nothing to do with the putting up of more halls of residence for the universities to absorb ever increasing students.

With above analysis, it is clear that though the uncapping of the GETfund is a welcome news, the burdens that have been imposed on the fund has made the decision useless. As we put this piece together, there are thousands of basic schools throughout the country where classes are conducted under tree shades.

The government through the GETfund should have built modern classrooms for these schools, but the big question is: can the fund sustain these huge investments? The answer is certainly a big no because the bulk of GETfund accruals are being spent on consumption. The Chronicle is, therefore, advising President Mahama and his government to devise a strategy that will help in the proper financing of education in the country.

The situation as we see it now is very dire and unless something dramatic is done, we will be jeopardising education in the country. The government should not gloss over the fact that students passing out from our teacher training universities are clamouring for postings, but if the educational infrastructures are simply not there, how are they going to be absorbed into the system?

It is the hope of The Chronicle that President Mahama and his Education minister, Haruna Iddrisu, are reading this editorial and will start thinking outside the bow on how to raise adequate funds to finance education in the country.

So far, he has started very well and he dares not fail Ghanaians.

GBA Women’s Forum donates to Osu Children’s Home in Mother’s Day gesture

The Women’s Forum of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has donated GH¢5,000 and assorted items to the Osu Children’s Home as part of activities marking this year’s Mother’s Day celebration.

The donation, made on Saturday, was the fourth consecutive gesture under the Forum’s annual outreach initiative to give back to society, inspire the underprivileged and showcase the compassionate side of the legal profession.

Presenting the items and cash to the orphanage, President of the GBA, Mrs. Efua Ghartey, described the occasion as a joyful one rooted in the spirit of Mother’s Day. She emphasised that the Bar had institutionalied the initiative as a key feature of its calendar.

Mrs. Ghartey said the Bar wants to show that lawyers are not only about courtrooms and legal arguments, but also about care, compassion and social responsibility.

To her, the most important aspect of the donation was to inspire the children here to dream big and consider careers in the legal field one day.

She urged other professional bodies and associations to emulate the gesture by extending support to the less fortunate.

“Many of us have more than enough in our homes. Let’s share with those who struggle to meet their basic needs,” she added.

Mrs. Ghartey also called on the Church to play a leading role in spreading kindness and uplifting the most vulnerable in society.

President of the Women’s Forum, Sheila Yaa Nyantekyiwah Minkah-Premo, Esq., noted that the donation was specifically timed to honour mothers and to remember orphans during the Mother’s Day celebration.

Management of the Osu Children’s Home expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the GBA Women’s Forum for the timely support and pledged to put the items and funds to good use.

The donation included food items, toiletries, and other essentials to support the children’s upkeep.
