The Gender Mainstreaming Section of the Ghana Immigration Service, with support from the Spanish Embassy in Ghana, has organised a symposium to mark International Women’s Day 2025.

The event was held under the theme: “Accelerate Action: For All Women and Girls; Rights, Equality and Empowerment.”

The symposium honoured women in the Ghana Immigration Service who are pioneering border security and migration management.

Delivering a welcome address, Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kwame Esuah Takyi, reaffirmed GIS’s commitment to enhancing female representation and fostering gender equity within the service.

He emphasised that women play a crucial role in national development, but continue to face systemic barriers that hinder their full participation.

“Despite the progress we have made, gender disparities persist and we must take bold and decisive steps to eliminate all forms of discrimination and inequality,” he stated.

He acknowledged the historical struggles for women’s rights, including access to education, equal pay and leadership opportunities, adding that global movements and legislative reforms have been pivotal in shaping a more equitable society.

One of the most significant achievements of GIS, under Mr Takyi’s leadership, is the adoption of the Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) Policy in 2024, making GIS the first security institution in Africa to implement such a framework.

This policy, he explained, serves as a cornerstone for creating a safe and inclusive work environment where all officers – regardless of gender – can thrive.

“We are committed to fostering a workplace that is free from discrimination and harassment. Our officers have undergone certification programs to promote gender-sensitive practices, ensuring that GIS remains a leader in gender equality,” he added.

Mr. Takyi took the opportunity to commend the contributions of female officers in Ghana’s security services, stating that their dedication and resilience have played a pivotal role in strengthening border security and migration management.

He also extended his gratitude to mothers, wives, and female supporters of security personnel, acknowledging their unwavering encouragement and sacrifices in ensuring the success of officers in their duties.

He called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, emphasizing that gender equality is not just a goal, but a necessity for national development. He stressed that education and empowerment are critical tools in dismantling systemic barriers.

“Empowering women through education has a profound impact, transforming not just individuals but entire communities and societies. The time for action is now,” he urged.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey emphasised Ghana’s legislative and policy achievements in promoting gender equality.

“Ghana has made formidable strides in ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls across various sectors, including politics, business and education,” the minister stated.

She highlighted key policies such as the Affirmative Action Gender Equality Act, Domestic Violence Act, and Human Trafficking Act, along with initiatives like the 24-hour gender-based violence helpline and social welfare digital platforms.

Calling for stronger partnerships, she urged stakeholders to “work together to empower the next generation and create an inclusive environment where women and girls can thrive.”

INEC To Conduct By-Elections

The Senate has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections to fill the vacant seats in Edo Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this during plenary on Tuesday, officially declaring the vacancies.

The upper chamber had declared the Edo Central seat vacant in 2024, following the inauguration of Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State in December, after his election.

Similarly, the Anambra South seat has remained unoccupied since the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.

INEC had previously stated in January 2025 that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate before proceeding with a by-election for Anambra South.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Elizabeth Agu, reiterated this during a stakeholders’ dialogue organised by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Awka, the state capital.

With both senatorial districts currently unrepresented in the upper legislative chamber, Akpabio urged INEC to conduct the elections to restore representation for the affected constituencies.

Fuel Subsidy Removal Was To Protect Your Future, Tinubu Tells the Youth

0
President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Monday said that every decision he has taken so far, including the fuel subsidy removal is all about Nigerian youths and their future.

Tinubu spoke during the inauguration of the Planning Committee for the National Youth Conference at the State House, Abuja.

He assured that the ongoing economic reforms were designed to strengthen the economy for the prosperity of Nigerian youths, who constitute more than 60 per cent of the population.

“I want to reassure you that you are the hope of this country, and everything hangs on you. Every decision that I have taken is about you. It’s about the future. When we removed the fuel subsidy, it was because we wanted to protect your future. We have cleared the path for you to have a great future,” Tinubu said was quoted to have said in a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

“When you listen to most professionals leaving Nigeria, there’s a cause. If you grow prosperity back home and empower people, they will not bother leaving. They will stay home.”

The President told the 44-member planning committee that the government would implement the outcomes of their deliberations and framework for the national conference.

“This is your opportunity to develop the nation and make it prosperous. The government of today is all about you. You can be critical of politicians and abuse them all the way you can, but politics is about development and the future of generations. You are the heartbeat of our nation, and I hope you take this responsibility seriously.

“I am glad you are here as a committee to inspire today, tomorrow and hereafter. I am with you,” he said.

The President noted that the economic reforms had repositioned the economy for greater prosperity and empowerment. Most indicators showed a steady fall in the prices of goods, especially foodstuffs, and a stabilisation of the exchange rate.

“When we started, it looked so foggy, dicey and hopeless. We worked hard, and it was like drawing water out of a dry well. But today, the economy has turned the corner; prices are falling, confidence in our economy is improving, investors are looking this way, and technology is advancing.

“You have a great opportunity, and I am ready to listen to you. I have heard your spokesperson’s remarks. You have a great chance of advancing the development of this country. It is all in your hands.

“My position is to help navigate, push, and lift the heavy weight of problems so that I can clear the way for you. You have a great future before you, which is in your hands.

“Just look me in the face and tell me whatever you think is wrong and the way forward. Be frank. We will implement your suggestions so long as they are for the country’s prosperity,” the President added.

House of Representatives

The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to ensure the blocking of all pornographic sites in the country.

The House wants the Commission to compel on all internet service providers to block all such contents with immediate effect.

An All Progressives Congress, APC, lawmaker from Katsina State, Dalhatu Tafoki, sponsored the motion.

Moving the motion leading to the passing of the resolution, Tafoki argued that cyber pornography was becoming a global problem, adding that Nigeria had not taken adequate steps to address it.

According to him, Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where major faiths preach against and prohibit nudity and obscenity.

The lawmaker went further to state that several countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East had enacted laws banning pornography.

To drive home his point, the Katsina lawmaker made reference to warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the negative impact of pornography.

According to him, pornography could lead to adultery, prostitution and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he said.

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives subjected the motion to a voice vote where the lawmakers voted in support of it.

The House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.

Armed militants in Pakistan’s Balochistan region have attacked a train carrying hundreds of passengers and taken a number of hostages, military sources have told the BBC.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) fired at the Jaffar Express Train as it travelled from Quetta to Peshawar.

A statement from the separatist group said it had bombed the track before storming the train in remote Sibi district. It claimed the train was under its control.

Pakistani police told local reporters at least three people, including the train driver, had been injured. Security forces have been sent to the scene, as well as helicopters to try to rescue hostages, police told the BBC.

There were reports of “intense firing” at the train, a Balochistan government spokesman told local newspaper Dawn. A senior police official said it “remains stuck just before a tunnel surrounded by mountains”, AFP news agency reports.

The Baloch Liberation Army has warned of “severe consequences” if an attempt is made to rescue those it is holding.

It has waged a decades-long insurgency to gain independence and has launched numerous deadly attacks, often targeting police stations, railway lines and highways. The Pakistani authorities – as well as several Western countries, including the UK and US – have designated the BLA as a terrorist organisation.
