It’s shameful for artistes to be ignorant of TGMA submission process –George Quaye

George Quaye

George Quaye, a former head of communications for Charterhouse, the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), has urged artistes to show interest in the scheme.

Responding to complaints by some artistes regarding the submission and nomination procedure of the TGMAs, George Quaye said on Daybreak Hitz that artistes who show ignorance about the awards must be ashamed.

“If you want to submit your works for the Grammys, do you go to anybody to teach you what to do? But at least you have to show that interest, right? If I were a musician, I’ll feel very ashamed to sit on radio to say, and I don’t know how to submit forms for TGMAs or I don’t know how to do that,” he told Andy Dosty.

George Quaye emphasised that the information is readily available on the TGMA website, and it’s the responsibility of the musicians to take the initiative to learn and submit their works correctly.

“Robert should come to your house to show you how to do it? It’s there on the website. The scheme has been here, like you rightly said, for 25 solid years. If you cannot do it yourself, get somebody to do it for you. But to go sit on radio or sit on social media to say, and I don’t know, and I don’t know, you must be ashamed of yourself. Are you kidding me?” he asserted.

He further stressed that with modern technology, there’s no excuse for not being able to find the necessary information.

My dad had profound influence on my passion for poetry –Abena Busia

Abena Busia

Renowned Ghanaian writer, poet, and former diplomat, Abena Pokua Adompim Busia, has opened up about the profound influence her father, Kofi Abrefa Busia, had on her passion for poetry.

She revealed that her childhood was steeped in literature, as poetry anthologies were a common sight in their home, nurturing her deep appreciation for the art of words.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, March 22, Abena Busia reflected on how her father, a former Prime Minister of Ghana and an intellectual giant, cultivated an environment that encouraged a love for poetry and literature among his children.

She narrated that it was a household tradition for her and her siblings to read, memorise, and recite poems—a practice that left an indelible mark on her creative journey.

Her father’s insistence on this literary practice made poetry an integral part of her upbringing, shaping her artistic sensibilities and developing her ability to appreciate rhythm, structure, and the power of language from an early age.

“We grew up in a household that appreciated the arts. We grew up listening to the King James version of the Bible. One of the first things our father did was to buy a whole bunch of poetry anthologies and said to us to choose any poem and recite it to him after every Sunday dinner.

“And so we all grew up reading and reciting poetry, singing Methodist hymns without appreciation of the written and spoken word. And then we went to a little English country village school where we had this crazy man for a headmaster who will also read us stories at the end of every school day.”

Gyakie

Gyakie, the Ghanaian Afro-Fusion star known for her captivating sound and heartfelt lyrics, has announced the title of her debut album, ‘After Midnight.’

In an Instagram post, Gyakie shared the inspiration behind the album title stating, “Almost all the songs on the album got recorded after midnight. Within those same hours, I get the best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity—everything from those hours helps my creativity a lot.”

“I’ve done a lot of crying after midnight too. When I’m in my down moments, I schedule the tears for when I get home from work, then I let it all out. Also, growing up, my mother would always pray for us after midnight while we were deeply asleep. It was a consistent routine, and she still does it whenever we’re together. To sum it up, this album hits differently when you listen at 12:01 AM or in the early hours of dawn.”

Expect “After Midnight” to explore the complexities of love, capturing the essence of vulnerability that emerges in the late hours. Gyakie’s soothing voice and poetic storytelling promise to take listeners on an emotional journey through various forms of love—a topic she’s known for. Prior to the album announcement, Gyakie teased an incoming single titled “Sankofa,” hinting at the rich themes and musical depth that fans can expect from the project.

With multiple accolades under her belt, including being the first Ghanaian female artist signed to RCA Records UK and Sony Music Africa, Gyakie is breaking new ground in the music industry. This March, she proudly represented Ghana at the Forbes Africa Women’s Leading Summit and featured in a Puma football campaign alongside legends such as Abedi Pele, Stonebwoy, and Smallgod. Her breakout hit “Forever” has achieved remarkable success, topping charts and earning her a place among the most streamed Ghanaian female artists globally.

Sudan army accused of killing hundreds in airstrike on Darfur market

Sudan accused of airstrike on Darfur market

A Sudanese war monitor has accused the military of killing hundreds of people in an air strike on a market in the country’s western Darfur region.

The Emergency Lawyers group – which documents abuses by both sides in Sudan’s civil war that erupted in April 2023 – said the bombing of Tur’rah market was a “horrific massacre” that had also left hundreds injured.

Videos posted on social media – some by the army’s rival the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that controls much of Darfur – showed the smoking ruins of market stalls and bodies charred beyond recognition.

A military spokesperson denied targeting civilians, saying it only attacked legitimate hostile targets.

Both the Sudanese armed forces and RSF have repeatedly been accused of shelling civilian areas.

The RSF has deployed drones in Darfur, but the army has the warplanes – and regularly strikes RSF positions across the region. The BBC has not been able to confirm the death toll or the exact date of the attack on the market, which is located about 35km (21 miles) north of the army-held city of el-Fasher.

A Darfur activist group – the Darfur Initiative for Justice and Peace – said it happened on Monday and called it the “deadliest single bombing since the beginning of the war”.

Civilian deaths in bombing and shelling attacks have intensified in recent months with the escalation of fighting in the country’s brutal civil conflict.

Some 12 million Sudanese people have fled their homes since war broke out – that is equivalent to Belgium or Tunisia’s entire population.

Rwanda planning to attack Burundi, president tells BBC

President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi

Burundi’s president has told the BBC he has seen “credible intelligence” that Rwanda plans to attack his country.

Évariste Ndayishimiye also said that Rwanda had tried to launch a coup a decade ago in Burundi, akin to “what it’s doing in the Democratic Republic of Congo” now.

Rwanda has already hit back, calling the president’s comments “surprising” and insisting that the two neighbours are co-operating on security plans for their shared border, which has been shut for over a year.

Despite extensive UN evidence, Rwanda has always denied arming and backing the M23 rebel group, which has recently seized large parts of eastern DR Congo alongside Rwandan troops.

Rwanda has also denied links to the resurgent Red Tabara rebel group, which President Ndayishimiye says is a proxy force similar to the M23 and is being supported by Rwanda to destabilise Burundi.

“They would say it’s an internal problem when it’s Rwanda [who is] the problem. We know that he [Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame] has a plan to attack Burundi,” Ndayishimiye added.

“Burundians will not accept to be killed as Congolese are being killed. Burundian people are fighters.

“But now we don’t have any plans to attack Rwanda. We want to resolve that problem by dialogue.”

At the heart of Ndayishimiye’s comments was a call for peace and the full implementation of an agreement between the two nations – a peace deal that had been signed in previous years but, according to Burundi, had not been honoured by Rwanda.

Russia, US ‘did not agree on joint statement’ after Ukraine ceasefire talks, media reports

Ukrainian troops fire towards Russian positions

Lengthy talks between the United States and Russia on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine have ended without agreement on Tuesday, Russian state news agency Interfax reported, pouring cold water on expectations that the two sides would be able to present some sort of joint statement after the marathon meeting.

Interfax quoted the first deputy chairman of the the Russian Federation Council’s Defence and Security Committee, Vladimir Chizhov, as telling state TV channel Rossiya-24 that the statement was “not adopted because of Ukraine’s position.”

“The fact that they sat for 12 hours and seemed to agree on a joint statement, which however was not adopted due to Ukraine’s position, is also very characteristic and symptomatic,” Chizhov told Russia-24, according to Interfax.

US and Russian diplomats had been widely expected to issue a joint statement on Tuesday morning. Such a statement would send a powerful signal that both Washington, DC and Moscow were serious about the ceasefire.

The US has not yet commented on the outcome of talks.

Russian and US officials met at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh on Monday, the same location where the US delegation met with Ukrainian officials on Sunday.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov described his meeting with President Donald Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg on Sunday as “productive and focused.”

Doctor treating Pope Francis says team considered ending treatment so he could die

Pope Francis

The medical staff looking after Pope Francis considered ending his treatment so he could die, according to the lead doctor, after the 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized with a drawn-out respiratory illness.

Professor Sergio Alfieri told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera the most critical moment came on February 28 when the pope had a breathing crisis and inhaled his own vomit.

“We had to choose whether to stop and let him go or force it and try with all the drugs and therapies possible, running the very high risk of damaging other organs. And in the end, we took this path,” Alfieri said.

Alfieri, who led the team at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, said the decision to continue with treatment was made by Massimiliano Strappetti, Francis’ nurse. He reportedly told Alfieri: “Try everything, we won’t give up. That’s what we all thought too. And no one gave up.”

Francis left the hospital on March 23 after 38 days in hospital, the longest since his election as pope 12 years ago. The pontiff had a number of breathing crises during his time in hospital, with Alfieri previously saying that two of them put the pope’s life in danger.

During his stay the Vatican provided an extraordinary level of detail about Francis’ condition.

Alfieri said this was the pope’s decision and that the Vatican’s bulletins were prepared by the medical team with some additions from Francis’ personal secretaries. “From the first day he asked us to tell him the truth and he wanted us to tell the truth about his condition… nothing was ever changed or omitted.” Francis has returned to his residence at Casa Santa Marta, where he will receive treatment including mobility and respiratory-related physiotherapy, especially for voice recovery, and engage in personal prayer, according to the Vatican.

Sea erosion displaces scores of households at Tema New Town

The destroyed the community

Devastating sea erosion has washed away several buildings at Awudum, a suburb of Tema New Town, displacing scores of residents.

When The Chronicle visited the area on Tuesday, several buildings were seen dangerously hanging on loose earth, which could be crushed by heavy tidal wave.

The coastline erosion started gradually in 2011, but after the Tema Port expansion in 2016, the situation worsened.

This, Joseph Ofori, the Assemblyman for Sea Light Electoral Area, feared it could be as worse as the Ketu South Municipality tidal waves attack, which left many families devastated.

Joshua Aguda, Assemblyman for Dade Agbo Electoral Area, whose area is also hit by the reeling effects of the sea erosion said if intervention by the government delays, the roads in the area would soon be washed away.

“Look at this! The sea is washing the road away. You can see that,” he told The Chronicle.

The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) has provided temporary shelters for the affected residents while both the Council and displaced residents look forward to receiving some relief items from the government.

Additionally, the two assembly members urged the government to prioritise Tema New Town in its upcoming sea defence projects, referencing successful interventions in Keta and Ada as models for action.

The two assembly members suggested Government of Ghana (GoG) collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Meridian Port Services (MPS) to find a lasting solution to the sea erosion, which is swiftly inundating lands along the coast of Tema New Town.

Best and Worst Seafood Dishes for Your Health

0

What Makes the Difference?

You’ll want to consider what’s in the dish, how it was cooked, freshness, and the type of fish. There are lots of good choices, but some are better than others. You’ll want to limit cream, oil, salt, “bad” fats, and mercury. Do you know what’s in your seafood entree?

Best: Salmon

It’s a nutritional darling that you’ll see on many U.S. menus. It’s high in healthy omega-3 fatty acids. And as a canned fish, it generally has less mercury than tuna. Wild salmon caught in Alaska is a good source, whether fresh or canned. Because fatty fish like salmon can have more of banned chemicals called PCBs, it helps if you cut away or drain extra fat, skin, and darker meat.

Worst: Fish and Chips

The fact that everything in this dish is deep-fried is not a good start. The tartar sauce and ketchup often served with it add even more fat, sugar, and calories. If you bake the fish (try it with a cornflake crust for a crunch) and potatoes, you can control the amount of oil. A simple lemon wedge is a low-calorie way to add flavor.

Have Sparingly: Broiled Swordfish

No matter how it’s caught or how you cook it, swordfish is likely to have high levels of mercury. It’s not a big deal to eat once in a while, but too much can damage your brain and kidneys. If you’re pregnant, that may hurt the baby or cause a miscarriage. Infants, the elderly, and those who have weak immune systems may be more sensitive to it. Shark, king mackerel, and tilefish from the Gulf of Mexico also have high levels of mercury.

Best: Shrimp Cocktail

It’s all about the sauce. The shrimp are usually steamed or boiled, which is pretty healthy. They’re high in protein, and low in fat and mercury. But the sauce, especially the classic bottled tomato-based type, can hide lots of sugar, sometimes listed as “high-fructose corn syrup.” So skip the dip, or make your own sugar-free version. You’ll find lots of recipes online.

Best: Salad With Anchovies

Because they’re small and don’t live that long, these fish are less likely to have mercury, PCBs, and other chemicals in their flesh. And they’re loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs to be at its best. Some packaged anchovies have a lot of salt, so check the label, especially if you have to watch your sodium. Look for white anchovies in vinegar — “boquerones” in Spanish cuisine — for a less-salty version.

Best: Canned Tuna

This lean fish gives you protein, and has some omega-3s. But tuna grow bigger than fish like sardines and anchovies, so they often have more mercury and other chemicals in their flesh. For lower mercury levels, look for the “canned light” kind. If you like albacore, look for products from the U.S. or Canada. If you’re watching your calories and fat, buy tuna packed in water instead of oil.

Best: Oysters

You’ll get protein and zinc, but it’s best to cook oysters, not eat them raw. That will help avoid food poisoning from bacteria like vibrio. This bacteria is more common in warmer months but can happen anytime. Hepatitis A can also be a risk with shellfish. Your oysters may be fine, but you can’t tell if it’s infected by how it looks and smells. Lemon juice, hot sauce, or alcoholwon’t kill vibrio. Only thorough cooking can do that.

Best: Baked Catfish

They may not be the prettiest fish to look at, but U.S. farm-raised catfish have a lot going for them. They’re low in mercury, eco-friendly, nutritious, and easy to find in grocery stores. You may want to check on the source, since some countries don’t have strict rules about fish farming. Fried catfish is a favorite for many, but frying adds lots of calories and fat. Bake it for a leaner dish.

Best: Grilled Sardines

They’re usually canned, but you can sometimes get fresh ones at the market that are great when grilled whole. They’ve got plenty of omega-3s and not much mercury, because they’re small and short-lived. Plus, there really are lots of these fish in the sea, and they usually aren’t expensive. As with tuna, you can get them packed in water instead of oil.

Best: Ceviche

Made with raw fish, lime juice, and often potatoes and onions, this is a traditional dish from Latin America. The acid in the lime juice may seem to “cook” it because the flesh changes color. A week in the freezer at -4 F usually gets rid of parasites that could make you sick. But the size and type of fish also make a difference, so let a chef make your ceviche.
