Zelensky accuses Russia of ‘buying time’ to stall truce talks

0
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine president

Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of “trying to buy time” to continue its war in Ukraine, a day after Donald Trump said progress towards a ceasefire had been made in a call with Vladimir Putin.

“If Russia continues to put forward unrealistic conditions and undermine progress, there must be tough consequences,” Ukraine’s president wrote on social media, adding that Kyiv was ready to negotiate.

Following separate calls with Zelensky and Putin on Monday, Trump said truce talks between Russia and Ukraine would start “immediately”.

Putin said he was ready to work on a “memorandum on a possible future peace agreement”, but did not address calls for a 30-day pause in fighting.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said it was up to Kyiv to “make decisions” and respond to a proposed peace memorandum.

However, the Kremlin downplayed suggestions that negotiations were close, with Russian state news agencies citing spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying “there are no deadlines and there cannot be any”.

Meanwhile, Zelensky launched a fresh round of diplomacy, speaking to Western allies in a bid to shore up support. Following a phone call with the Finnish president, Zelensky wrote on social media that Ukraine was working with partners to ensure pressure on Moscow “forces the Russians to change their behaviour”.

It came as the European Union and UK announced that they had adopted new rounds of sanctions against Russia. The EU said it was blacklisting nearly 200 more oil tankers in Russia’s “shadow fleet”, and warned of a “tougher response” if Moscow did not agree to a truce in Ukraine.

Diets that could help relieve depression and anxiety

0

Symptoms of depression range from lasting feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness, to losing interest in the things you used to enjoy and feeling very tearful. Many people with depression also have symptoms of anxiety.

There can be physical symptoms too, such as feeling constantly tired, sleeping badly, having no appetite or sex drive, and various aches and pains.

For anxiety they say that common symptoms include feeling restless or on edge being irritable, getting tired easily and having tense muscles.

Two simple diet changes could reduce the symptoms of debilitating mental health conditions, a study suggests.

A major review by researchers at Bond University in Queensland, Australia, found that calorie restrictive diets may reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The research–which included 25 studies involving 57,000 adults–also found that low fat diets may help relieve anxiety.

Researchers found that the benefits of a low fat diet on mental health were primarily seen among people at ‘elevated cardiometabolic risk’.

This included those suffering from conditions like obesity or insulin resistance the latter considered a potential precursor to type 2 diabetes.

A calorie restrictive diet is an eating pattern where you limit the amount of calories you consume per day in a bid to lose weight, usually around 1500 calories total.

Dieters are also advised to avoid processed foods and products high in sugar.

On the other hand, a low fat diet is considered getting less than 30 per cent of your energy intake from fats, a level recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Publishing their findings in the journal the Annals of Internal Medicine, the experts said while calorie restrictive and low fat diets may help combat depression and anxiety the quality of the data supporting this was low.

As such they recommended any patient suffering from these problems discuss potential dietary changes with a health care professional beforehand.

The authors didn’t speculate on how diet may help combat mental health issues, but previous studies have established a link between food and mood.

In 2017 Australian researchers, published a study in the journal BMC Medicine, where 33 people with major, drug-resistant depression were put on the Mediterranean diet for three months.

They were then compared with 34 people with the same condition who continued with their usual diets.

The Mediterranean diet group experienced ‘significantly greater improvement’ in symptoms than the control group.

Additionally, last year data from 3,000 adults showed that, after six years, those who followed Mediterranean diet had a 16 per cent lower risk of developing depression than people who didn’t.

The Mediterranean typically involves focusing on fresh produce, lean meat like fish and chicken, and whole grains, while eating less red meat and sweets.

Professor Felice Jacka, an expert in nutritional psychiatry and director of the Food and Mood Centre at Deakin University in Geelong, Australia, previously told MailOnline she is convinced there is link between diet and depression

‘Where mental health is concerned, our gut microbes are running us,’ said Professor Jacka.

She said that a diet rich in unprocessed foods with lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, pulses and grains is the key.

Professor Jacka said this fibre-rich diet richly supports a healthy gut microbiome, the population of bacteria, viruses and fungi that naturally live in our digestive tract.

Fibre is a type of complex carbohydrate found in plants that our bodies cannot easily break down.

This means it passes through the digestive system all the way to the large intestine where it helps feeds trillions of micro-organisms.

Fibre’s mood benefits have been demonstrated in a review of 18 previous studies, published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience in 2023.

The University of Adelaide researchers found that, for people deemed at risk of depression, each additional 5g of fibre they added to their diet was associated with a 5 per cent reduction of their risk of developing symptoms.

Professor Jacka co-authored a study in the journal Clinical Nutrition which concluded that a person’s risk of depressive symptoms goes up 10 per cent for each additional 10 per cent that their diet is comprised of UPFs.

‘If you do just one thing to improve your mental health through diet, completely cut out soft drinks, ice cream and crisps,’ Professor Jacka told MailOnline.

While multiple studies have established a link between what we eat and mental health, other experts caution the relationship might not be as clear cut as it seems.

They highlight that for UPFs and depression there is no clear cause and effect.

Additionally, they note that patients who eat a lot of UPFs are also more likely to be obese, exercise less frequently and more likely to smoke, all of which could influence their mental wellbeing.

Feature: Cedi Appreciation: “Gold For Oil” Not The Same As “Gold For Reserves”

0
Razak Kojo Opoku (PhD)

The recent appreciation of the Cedi against the US dollar and other trading currencies has led to many arguments and credit-taking competitions.

For political expediency and partisan interest, some have credited the Cedi recovery to:

  1. Gold for Oil Policy spearheaded by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
  2. GoldBod Initiative spearheaded by Mahama’s government.
  3. External Influences such as US-China Tariffs war and trade tensions.

However, it is important to state certain facts without any form of political interest as follows:

  1. The “Gold for Oil” is not the same as “Gold for Reserves”.

“Gold for Oil” was implemented by Akufo-Addo’s government as a specific programme where gold was used to pay for oil imports with the sole objective of reducing foreign exchange dependency as well as ensure the stabilization of fuel prices on the Ghanaian market. That is, domestically produced gold in Ghana was used to pay for oil imports instead of using foreign currency especially US Dollars.

The net effect of “Gold for Oil” policy reduce dependence on foreign trading currencies for oil imports, reduce the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel costs, and potentially ensure the stability of fuel prices on the domestic market.

In nutshell, Bawumia’s “Gold for Oil” was a specific policy aimed at providing solution to a specific economic challenge of Fuel Pricing Stability. That is, the policy was an innovative barter arrangement aimed at exchanging domestically procured gold for imported petroleum products thereby reducing the need for US Dollars to buy fuel from the world market. The Gold for Oil was a specific need for the Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs), and the deal involved the Bank of Ghana purchasing gold from small-scale gold operators in Cedis, which the Central Bank then sells on the world market for US Dollars. The dollars realised from the sales was used by Bank of Ghana to purchase the oil or in some instances, swapped the gold for the oil.

On the other hand, “Gold for Reserves” is a continuous policy and comprehensive financial strategy implemented by Bank of Ghana and other Central Banks, aims at managing a country’s overall foreign exchange portfolio.

The rationale behind “Gold for Reserves” Policy is to provide a stable exchange rate regime (that is building foreign exchange reserves), stable store of value, buffer against inflation, investments-diversification, and act as a hedge against financial instability.

The “Gold for Reserves” policy has been in existence long before the introduction of “Gold for Oil Policy”, and both were running concurrently until the current Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama announced the outright suspension of the “Gold for Oil” policy, citing:
(a). Policy implementation challenges
(c). Operational challenges
(d). Financial losses to the State.

It is important to state that, the “Gold for Reserves” Policy is still in place and has always been in operations, and that, the recent GoldBod initiatives seems to only enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the operationalization of “Gold for Reserves” Policy of Bank of Ghana. With or without the GoldBod, the Bank of Ghana would still continue to operate its traditional “Gold for Reserves” Policy.

Was “Gold for Oil” Policy able to addressed the depreciation of the Cedi against the US Dollar and other trading currencies since its implementation from 2022 to March 2025? The answer to this question is BIG NO.

Was the “Gold for Oil” Policy able to ensures the stability of domestic fuel prices in Ghana between 2022-March 2025? The answer to this question is Partially Yes.

Unbiased Verdict
The recent appreciation of the Cedi against the US Dollar and other trading currencies are largely due to the following reasons:

  1. Policy Reforms, Fiscal Policy Objectives, and Monetary Policy objectives of Mahama’s government.
  2. Favorable global economic conditions especially the recent US-China trade tensions (Tariffs War between US and other countries especially in relation to China).
Both US and China are significant trading partners of Ghana.
  3. Ongoing Fiscal Reforms (Fiscal discipline programme) under Ghana-IMF programme, and the credit has to be given to former President Akufo-Addo, Ken Ofori-Atta, former Minister of Finance, and Hon. Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, former Minister of Finance.

It is without doubt that, the $ 3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility has restored some considerable level of economic confidence, with an anticipated $370 million tranche hitting the account of Bank of Ghana soon.

For the records, Mahama ended his first term with IMF cushion from 2015-2016, and his second term too is being cushioned with IMF from 2025-2026.

  1. Ongoing Ghana’s Debt Restructuring Programme, and the credit has to be given to former President Akufo-Addo, Ken Ofori-Atta, former Minister of Finance, and Hon. Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, former Minister of Finance.

During the 2025 Budget Speech delivered on 11th March 2025, Hon. Dr. Ato Forson stated that, “Mr. Speaker, you may recall that the government(Akufo-Addo’s government) commenced the debt restructuring programme in 2022 to restore debt sustainability and economic stability. Mr. Speaker, as of now, the restructuring process is approximately 93 percent completed completed. The remaining 7 percent relates to debt of US$2.7 billion owed to commercial creditors. We (Mahama’s government) are committed to completing the remaining debt restructuring as soon as possible”(Sections 101, 102 & 103 and Pages 23-24 of the 2025 Budget Speech).

It is very worthy to state that, the Ghana’s debt restructuring has provided a necessary vital breathing room for Mahama’s government, with the next major payment due in July 2025.

  1. The recent S&P Global Ratings Upgrade of Ghana’s credit status from selective default to CCC+, and the credit has to be given to President John Mahama, and Hon. Dr. Ato Forson, Minister of Finance.
  2. The recent direct market interventions by the Bank of Ghana, in the forex injection of $490 million in April 2025, and the credit has to be given to Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of Bank of Ghana.
  3. World market pricing of Ghana’s gold at $ 3, 400 per ounce, and cocoa at $ 10, 000 per ton.
  4. Establishment and operationalization of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) even though UP Tradition Institute still has some strong reservations about the monopolistic creation of the GoldBod.
  5. The decline of the US Dollar Index (DXY) leading to the weakening of the dollar against other trading currencies.
  6. The increased gold reserves of Bank of Ghana, valuing at approximately $3.6 billion by 30th April 2025 kind courtesy the combined positive effects of “Gold for Reserves” Policy(with credit to Bank of Ghana), suspended “Gold for Oil” Policy(with credit to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia), and the operations of the GoldBod (with credit to President John Mahama, especially the requirements that, 20% of gold export proceeds should be converted to Ghana Cedis before dollar exchange as well as the decision of Mahama’s government through GoldBod to purchase 20% of gold from large-scale mining companies).

The recent recovery of the Cedi is a combination of several factors, and therefore, it is very pedestrian for anyone to single out one initiative as the causality of the Cedi appreciation.

Based on the available facts and data, it fair to state that:

  1. Mahama’s government (President John Mahama, Hon. Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, and Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of Bank of Ghana) contributed 50% to the recent appreciation of the Cedi.
  2. Akufo-Addo’s government (President Akufo-Addo, Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta, Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam, and Governor Ernest Addison) contributed 25% to the recent appreciation of the Cedi.
  3. IMF-Ghana Programme, and CCC+ credit status of Ghana by S&P Global Ratings contributed 15% to the recent appreciation of the Cedi.
  4. Favorable Global Economic conditions such as US-China Tariffs war contributed about 9% to the recent appreciation of the Cedi.
  5. “Gold for Oil” Policy and other domestic factors contributed about 0.5-1% to the recent appreciation of the Cedi.

Therefore, the role of the suspended “Gold for Oil” Policy to the recent Cedi appreciation is highly insignificant on a scale of 100%.

In conclusion, to safeguard the sustainable appreciation of the Cedi against the US Dollar and other trading currencies, the UP Tradition Institute would like to respectfully recommend to the Mahama’s government or future government of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) to consider the:

  1. Enactment of “Ghana Gold Reserve Act” under the direct control and supervision of the Bank of Ghana.

The “Ghana Gold Reserve Act” would protect the currency system of Ghana, provides guidelines/regulations for the better use of the monetary gold stock at the Bank of Ghana.

The operations/functionality of the “Ghana Gold Reserve Act” would NOT be the same as the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). The GoldBod would contribute to the “Gold for Reserves” Policy whereas the “Ghana Gold Reserve Act” would ensure the proper international best practices as far as the monetary use of gold stock at Bank of Ghana is concerned.

  1. Establish the “Exchange Stabilization Fund (ESF)” under the “Ghana Gold Reserve Act”, to control the value of foreign currencies in relation to the performance of the Cedi.

Amend the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006(Act 723) to include the authority of the President of the Republic of Ghana to establish the gold value of the dollar or any foreign currency by proclamation through the Ministry of Finance without unnecessary approval from the Bank of Ghana.

Lamine Yamal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said that talks to extend Lamine Yamal’s contract will end well, with the LaLiga champions prepared to give the teenager “special treatment.”

Yamal has a deal with Barça until 2026 and ESPN have previously reported the Catalan club want to tie him down to longer terms when he turns 18 in July.

“There is always some suffering involved,” Laporta told TV3 when asked for an update on negotiations to prolong the forward’s contract.

“It’s been discussed, but it’s not signed. Lamine’s a great player, an extraordinary person and is already very mature.

“There are good feelings with his representatives and with his family. His agent, [Jorge] Mendes, advises him well.

Discussions between both parties have been ongoing for months, but with each passing week Yamal’s market value continues to grow.

He has played a key role in the final months of the season as Barça completed a domestic treble, winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa.

Rahim Ayew backs Black Satellites despite U-20 World Cup qualification collapse

0
Black Satellites

Former Ghana international Rahim Ayew has thrown his support behind the Black Satellites following their inability to qualify for the 2025 U-20 FIFA World Cup in Chile.

Ghana’s U-20 side suffered a heartbreaking exit in the quarterfinals of the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) after losing to Egypt in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The game had ended 2-2 after regulation time, but the Black Satellites were edged out 5-4 on penalties, dashing their hopes of making a return to the global stage.

Despite the disappointment, Ayew remains optimistic about the team’s progress and development.

“I’ll not say it’s a disappointment because it’s a process. In some time past, the team was not able to qualify, but this time around, they played in the quarterfinals, so I see that they have been able to achieve something,” he told Asempa FM.

The former Zamalek midfielder noted that comparisons with past generations, such as the era of his brother André Ayew, may be unfair given the changes in the football landscape.

“Times have changed because you look at Andre Ayew’s era, they were playing at the tip level, but it is not the same today, so I believe we should give this team some time and see what happens.

“I believe if we are able to keep it and they will be able to win something in the future for the country,” he added.

Man United, Tottenham faceoff in Europa League final today

0
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur

Both aiming to end dismal seasons on a high, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United will meet in Bilbao for Wednesday’s Europa League final.

Domestic deficiencies can be brushed aside for 90 minutes – or more – as they convene for the sixth all-English UEFA final; like Spurs, United’s European hopes for next season also rest on success at Bilbao.

Despite all the doom produced by their Premier League campaign, Tottenham could still finish the 2024-25 season with a long-desired major trophy, having waited 17 years to lift any silverware.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs won the UEFA Cup twice before it eventually developed into the Europa League – in 1972 and 1984 – so victory in Spain would also see them become the second English club to win Europe’s second-tier tournament three times, along with Liverpool.

Of course, their last final appearance was a 2-0 loss to the Merseyside giants in the 2018-19 Champions League, but having emerged from the inaugural league phase and then progressed through the knockout rounds, they are back – and just one win away from proving Ange Postecoglou‘s prophecy right.

Ange Postecoglou

Under fire for several months now, Tottenham’s Australian coach lead a team into a major European final – infamously pointed to his record of always winning a trophy in his second year at any club, and Spurs could now extend that trend.

They made it through to the decider with an ultimately dominant 5-1 aggregate victory over Norwegian ground-breakers Bodo/Glimt, as Dominic Solanke scored in both legs of their semi-final.

After finishing fourth in the league phase – one point behind Manchester United – the London club eliminated AZ Alkmaar and Eintracht Frankfurt before dispatching Bodo, and they have won nine of 14 matches in this season’s Europa League.

Head-to-Head

Against United this season, Spurs have earned three wins from three: a 3-0 league victory at Old Trafford, then a 4-3 success in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, before a 1-0 home win in February.

In fact, the Manchester side will come into this high-stakes encounter winless in their last six meetings with Tottenham across all competitions.

The clubs’ only previous clash in European competition came in the 1963-64 Cup Winners’ Cup, with the Red Devils progressing to the quarter-finals via a 4-3 aggregate victory.

While Spurs are seeking a first continental title since 1984, United hope to repeat their 2017 Europa League triumph.

Manchester United

Man Utd made this year’s decider by spoiling the narrative of a cherished home final for Athletic Bilbao, cruising to a 3-0 first-leg triumph in the Basque Country before sealing the deal with a 4-1 home win one week later.

That straightforward success came after an incredible quarter-final tie against Lyon, in which they led by two goals at half time of the second leg before trailing by two in extra time. Two more goals then drew the Red Devils level, setting the stage for Harry Maguire to secure a last-gasp 7-6 aggregate win at Old Trafford.

Having scored 12 goals in their last three games, United have netted 35 throughout this Europa League journey; the only teams ever to score more in a single UEFA Cup or Europa League campaign were Borussia Monchengladbach in 1972-73 (36), Porto in 2010-11 (37), and Chelsea in 2018-19 (36).

Ruben Amorim

Furthermore, Ruben Amorim‘s otherwise inconsistent side are still unbeaten in Europe this term and could become just the fourth team in the Europa League era to win the competition without losing.

Ruben Amorim, Manchester United

Aiming to put some gloss on an awful start to his time in England, Amorim would also become only the third Man Utd manager to lift a major trophy during his first season, after Jose Mourinho in 2016-17 and Erik ten Hag in 2022-23.

However, his team recorded their 18th league loss of the season with Friday’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea – leaving them one point and one place above Spurs in 16th – and Champions League qualification relies on making another memorable night in Bilbao. While Amorim brought back several regular starters for Friday’s Premier League game, citing the need for match-sharpness, Postecoglou played a weakened team at Villa Park.

So, despite impressing against Aston Villa, Antonin Kinsky will make way for Guglielmo Vicario in goal, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Pedro Porro also set to return.

Heung-min Son

Spurs skipper Heung-min Son started for the first time since recovering from a foot injury and could keep his place, but Dejan KulusevskiJames MaddisonLucas BergvallTimo Werner and Radu Dragusin are all ruled out of Wednesday’s final.

Son Hueng-min, Tottenham Hotspur

Supported by Son, Solanke is set to lead the front line, having registered five goals and four assists in this season’s Europa League; he has also scored in all of his last four appearances against Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes

Meanwhile, United star Bruno Fernandes sits joint-top of the golden boot rankings with seven goals so far, while Rasmus Hojlund is one of several players on six.

Only Lyon’s Rayan Cherki (12) has been directly involved in more Europa League goals this season than United’s inspirational captain (11). Indeed, the only player to manage more in one campaign for an English club was Olivier Giroud, with Chelsea in 2018-19 (15).

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United

Bolstering a misfiring attack, recent returnees Mason Mount and Amad Diallo both made an impact on the second-leg win over Athletic, but Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot are all doubts; Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee will not return until next term.

Prediction

Man Utd can save their season by winning the Europa League for a second time, seeing off Spurs to secure a place in the 2025-26 Champions League.

In a fascinating contest between two unpredictable teams, almost anything can happen at San Mames, but United should hold their nerve to prevail after 30 added minutes.

Compassion Over Wealth: Alhaji Agongo Fulfills GHS500,000 Pledge to Ghana Medical Trust Fund

0

In a country where the minimum monthly wage is just GHS450, surviving a chronic illness like kidney failure can feel like a death sentence.

For many Ghanaians, monthly dialysis costs exceeding GHS8,400 make lifesaving treatment an unattainable luxury.

But last week, a moment of hope emerged under the Accra sun, when businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo fulfilled a heartfelt pledge by donating GHS500,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

The donation, made on behalf of Alive Industries—the company he founded—was a promise kept from the launch of the Fund under former President John Dramani Mahama. Standing before officials at the Ministry of Health, Agongo’s gesture was more than philanthropy—it was a rallying cry for compassion over wealth.

“I see their faces every day,” Agongo told reporters, his voice tinged with emotion. “Mothers who sell everything for one more dialysis session. Fathers choosing between feeding their children and staying alive. These are the impossible choices no Ghanaian should have to make.”

A former banker and owner of a dialysis center, Agongo is all too familiar with the harsh economics of kidney disease. At GHS800 per session and three sessions needed weekly, many patients face over 20 times the monthly minimum wage in treatment costs. “In a developing country where people hardly get food to eat, this is a significant strain,” he noted.

A Lifeline for the Vulnerable

Agongo’s contribution will go directly to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known widely as “Mahama Cares.” The initiative supports the most vulnerable citizens: the poor, the elderly, the jobless, and those without social safety nets.

Health Minister Mintah Kwabena Akandoh, visibly moved, described the donation as a powerful example of national solidarity. “This is about Ghanaians standing for Ghanaians,” he said. “Alhaji Agongo has shown us that generosity doesn’t come from abundance, but from empathy.”

Agongo, who also runs Agricult, an agriculture-based enterprise, stressed that his commitment to health care is grounded in a broader vision for Ghana’s future. “My business only flourishes in a healthy environment,” he said. “Access to healthcare must not be a privilege—it is a right.”

A Call to Collective Action

More than a donation, Agongo’s act was a challenge to all Ghanaians. “This is not about wealth—it’s about compassion,” he declared. “It is not because I have, but because I care. Together, let’s be the reason someone gets another chance at life.”

His track record reflects that ethos. Beyond this donation, Agongo has quietly funded numerous health initiatives across Ghana, including the construction of a dedicated block for the Child Emergency Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

In a country where financial barriers often dictate survival, Alhaji Agongo’s gesture is a powerful reminder: true wealth lies in how deeply we care for one another.

Alleged SkyTrain Scandal: Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi Hospitalised Again

0
Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi

The second accused in the Accra SkyTrain scandal, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was once again absent from court on Tuesday, May 20, after reportedly being rushed to the hospital earlier this morning—his second such absence on a scheduled court date.

This prompted the prosecution, led by Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, to indicate that a decisive step would be taken should Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi fail to appear on the next adjourned date.

The Criminal Division ‘4’ of the High Court, presided over by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, was expected to take the plea of the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), who is standing trial alongside Solomon Asamoah, the Fund’s former CEO, over a US$2 million payment made in 2019 for the now-abandoned Accra SkyTrain project.

Defence counsel Duke Aaron Sasu, led by Andrew Appiah-Dankwa, informed the court that they were notified at dawn that Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi had been admitted to an emergency ward.

“My lady, we were supposed to be here for A2’s plea to be taken. We were informed this dawn that A2 was rushed to the emergency hall,” Sasu stated. “We are in the process of securing the medical report for the court. We’ve been told that by Friday, he should be available for his plea to be taken.”

Justice Tasiame, however, expressed concern about the pattern of absences, noting: “It appears the second accused person is always rushed to the hospital on the day the case is coming on. Last week you said he was taken for surgery.”

Dr. Srem-Sai added that while the prosecution would not impute ill intent, it had noted the timing of the accused’s hospital visits and would take a firmer stance if the trend continues.

“We do not want to impute anything, except to say that Friday is not far. But when Friday comes, we will make a prayer to my lady on how the prosecution intends to move forward with the second accused person,” he stated.

The court adjourned the case to May 26 at 10:00 a.m., with a strong indication that failure to appear could result in further legal consequences for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi.

Meanwhile, Solomon Asamoah, the first accused, was granted bail in the sum of GH¢15 million with two sureties who are to justify the bond with landed property located within the Greater Accra Region. He has surrendered both his Ghanaian and UK passports to the court and is required to report to the police three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—until the final determination of the case.

Asamoah has pleaded not guilty to six counts, including conspiracy to commit a crime, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds, in violation of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and the Public Property Protection Decree, 1977 (SMCD 140).

The charges relate to a 2019 agreement with Africa Investor Holdings Limited, a company registered in Seychelles, for the proposed development of the Accra SkyTrain light rail system. According to prosecutors, the US$2 million paid out under the deal was never accounted for, and the project failed to take off.

The prosecution maintains that the disbursement lacked due diligence and the necessary government approvals, resulting in a significant financial loss to the state.
