Navy destroys illegal refining sites

The Nigerian Navy said that its personnel busted and destroyed eight illegal crude oil refining sites in Delta State.

The Navy also stated that it seized thousands of litres of stolen crude and refined products during the operations.

Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, confirmed the operations while speaking to journalists in Warri on Tuesday.

Okoloagu stated that the operations were conducted as part of Operation DELTA SANITY II, a strategic initiative aimed at curbing economic sabotage in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region.

“In total, the three operations led to the deactivation of eight illegal refining sites, with the seizure of approximately 16,040 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,650 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO),” Okoloagu disclosed.

He explained that the illegal refining materials were found concealed in two makeshift refining ovens, 43 dugout pits, and 18 polythene sacks.

Children’s Day: Tinubu Condemns Bullying, Promises Better Future, Environment

President Bola Tinubu has condemned child bullying and is promising to create a better and more secure environment for children in the country.

This was the crux of Tinubu’s message on the 2025 Children’s Day celebration.

In a statement he issued on Tuesday, President Tinubu said this year’s Children’s Day theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” is a fitting reminder of the need to build a culture where every child is respected and heard.

“A culture where every child feels safe, respected, and heard, both in physical spaces and digital communities.

“Just to be clear, violence, bullying, and neglect have no place in the Nigeria of today,” the president said.

“Globally, more than 1 in 3 children experience bullying regularly. In Nigeria, studies estimate that up to 65% of school-age children have experienced some form of physical, psychological, or social aggression. This is unacceptable. A child who learns in fear cannot learn well. A child who grows in fear cannot grow right.”

According to Tinubu, the Federal Government and states in the country are taking measures to protect children, whom he described “as the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the custodians of tomorrow’s promise, innovation, and leadership”.

He listed these efforts to include the “full implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which I recently launched.

“The plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to prevent abuse, prosecute perpetrators, and support victims, backed by robust financing and multi-sectoral coordination.

“I am pleased to note that 36 states have domesticated the Child Rights Act, thus reflecting our collective resolve to protect and provide for the welfare of children. However, laws alone will not be sufficient to protect our children. We require a holistic approach where parents, teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, lawmakers, and citizens must take ownership.”

He called on Nigerians, especially stakeholders, to embed child rights in their budgets, plans, and policies.

“I commend states taking bold steps for our children’s welfare and urge those yet to act: now is the time. Our children are not just statistics – they are the heart of our nation,” President Tinubu said. “Let today mark a renewed movement to build a Nigeria where no child suffers in silence, no child is left behind, and every child grows in dignity, peace, and love.”

KMA to deploy police to enforce compliance with reduced transport fares

0
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is taking steps to ensure commercial drivers in the metropolis adhere to new transport fares following a 15 per cent reduction by transport unions.

A statement issued by the public affairs directorate of the assembly and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, said it had come to its notice that some commercial drivers have refused to comply with the newly approved fares.

“It is important to note that any commercial driver who refuses to charge the approved reduced fare commits a criminal offence punishable by law,” the statement cautioned.

It said officers will be deployed on major roads within the city to enforce compliance following a meeting between the leadership of KMA and the Regional Head of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

The statement entreated the public to cooperate with officers who would be deployed on the roads, as the KMA strived to restore order and sanity on the roads.

In another development, Mr Wilbert Petty Brentum, the Western North Regional Minister, says the 15 per cent reduction in transport fares will boost the economy by lowering the prices of goods and services across all sectors.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, the Minister said the reduction was attributed to favourable microeconomic conditions, particularly the continuous appreciation of the cedi against the dollar, which had contributed to the drop in fuel prices.

He said: “The fare reduction is expected to improve food prices since traders often factored transportation cost into their pricing, so they should support this initiative by adjusting their prices downward to reflect this significant progress.”

Mr Wilbert Brentum continued: “Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, some economic policies have fostered a more favourable financial environment, allowing the currency to gain strength against other international currencies.”

These policies, he added, had a direct and positive impact on the cost of imported goods, particularly fuel which was a critical component of the transport sector.

He appealed to the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other authorities to take actions against drivers who failed to comply with the directives.

Government Grants Electricity Exemption to ‘Critical’ Institutions

Mr John Jinapor, Minister for Energy

The Ministry of Energy and Green Innovation has announced an electricity bill exemption for selected ministries classified as “critical,” in a move aimed at ensuring uninterrupted public service delivery across Ghana.

According to a statement sighted by The Chronicle, the affected ministries include: The Office of the President, the Ministry of Defenc, the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education

However, the exemption applies specifically to designated agencies and services operating under these ministries.

The directive, approved by Cabinet under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, is aimed at supporting the continuous functioning of essential public institutions.

“I write to inform you that the Cabinet of the Republic of Ghana, chaired by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, has approved exemption for critical strategic institutions/agencies from the payment of electricity bills. This decision ensures the continued operation of critical services across the country,” the statement read.

The Ministry of Finance is expected to assume responsibility for these bills.

“Under this new directive, the Ministry of Finance will assume responsibility for the electricity bills of these strategic institutions/agencies. This measure aims to alleviate the financial burdens of these agencies and ensure that these vital services remain uninterrupted,” the Ministry stated.

To clarify, the statement emphasised that monthly electricity bills for the exempted institutions will be covered by the Ministry of Finance, using a portion of their goods and services allocation as approved in the national budget.

Revenue Collection Measures

While providing relief for critical institutions, the Ministry also instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to step up their revenue collection efforts.

“In line with the decision by Cabinet, I hereby direct the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to intensify their revenue collection efforts to recover all outstanding bills from other institutions immediately,” the statement added.

Furthermore, both ECG and NEDCo have been granted the authority to disconnect power supply to non-exempted institutions that fail to settle their electricity bills.

“The Government remains committed to maintaining the financial stability of the energy sector to ensure consistent provision of electricity to the Ghanaian people,” the Ministry concluded.

P.K. Foundation Supports 37 Military Hospital in Fight Against TB

The Tuberculosis (TB) Control Unit Office at 37 being inaugurated

A Tuberculosis (TB) Control Unit Office has been officially inaugurated at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, as part of efforts to significantly curb the spread of TB within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and across the country.

The facility, located at the hospital’s Public Health Annex, was established through a collaborative effort between the GAF Medical Services and Mr. Prosper Kwame Appiah, founder of the P.K. Foundation.

Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, Commander of the 37 Military Hospital and Acting Deputy Chief of Staff Medical (DCOS MED), commissioned the new TB unit.

She commended Mr. Appiah and the P.K. Foundation for their instrumental role in establishing the facility, noting that it will enhance GAF’s campaign against TB by providing quality screening, diagnosis, and treatment services.

“The TB Control Unit will not only improve our ability to identify and treat cases early but also ensure patients receive quality care throughout their recovery,” Brig Gen Abraham-Kwabiah said.

Captain (GN) Harriet Manu, Officer in Charge of the hospital’s Public Health Division, expressed appreciation for the support and highlighted the importance of public health in preventing diseases, improving life expectancy, and enhancing national productivity.

“Investing in public health systems like this helps reduce overall healthcare costs and promotes a healthier, more productive population,” she stated.

She revealed that the hospital recorded 144 TB cases in the past year, with an 80 percent recovery rate.

However, she lamented that many cases are reported at advanced stages, reducing the chances of successful recovery.

In his remarks, Mr. Appiah described it as a personal honor to contribute to the fight against TB. He stressed the urgency of tackling the disease, noting that Ghana records approximately 15,000 new TB cases and 4,100 related deaths each year.

“It is heartbreaking to see lives cut short and dreams left unfulfilled because of a preventable and curable disease like TB,” Mr. Appiah said.

“This is my small contribution to a much larger battle.”

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officers of the 37 Military Hospital, staff of the P.K. Foundation and other key stakeholders in the health sector.

Buffer Zone Encroachment: Minister Directs Ghana Water Company to Act

0
WR Minister Joseph Nelson (1st left) together with GWCL officials

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has ordered Ghana Water Company (GWCL) to urgently  demarcate the Daboase Water Treatment Plant'(DWTP) buffer zones and immediately halt illegal activities within the zone.
The move is aimed at protecting the 70 million Euros water expansion project, which will supply 22 million gallons per day to Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities, from encroachment by landowners feigning ignorance.

The Daboase water treatment plant, built in the late 1960s with a capacity of six million gallons/day, and the Inchaban plant, with four million gallons, struggle to meet demand for Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding areas.
Illegal mining activities have exacerbated water turbidity, reducing production from 6 million gallons/day to just above 16,000 gallons/day.

The water supply is further threatened by encroachment on buffer zones protecting the water source, especially during the dry season.
Gideon Asare Annor, the  western regional production manager of the  Ghana Water Company Limited told news men “as you can see, the buffer zone has been completely encroached upon, which means this river will likely dry up faster than usual during the dry season”.

Ideally, the buffer zone he further noted, should start further up to prevent runoff and protect the water source. Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, during his familiarization visit to the Daboase treatment plant, directed Ghana Water Company to demarcate buffer zones urgently.

The Minister also instructed local chiefs to halt any planned activities within the designated zones.”The chiefs who sold land within the buffer zone claim ignorance, saying they didn’t know it was a restricted area. To prevent further encroachment, I suggest installing signposts to clearly mark the buffer zone as a no-go area,” he said.
“I urge the District Chief Executive to address this issue with the chiefs”, he added, emphasising that their actions are illegal and threaten the water supply for the metropolis and surrounding communities.

The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and GWCL launched the seventy million Euros water Expansion project in Sekondi-Takoradi in May 2022.
Austrian firm Strabag was contracted to build a 22 million gallons per day Daboase water treatment plant.

During the Western Regional Minister’s visit, Strabag reported 86% completion, with the whole project expected to be completed on November 7, 2025.
Vlad Falup, the Project manager for the Strabag Engineering explained that, “all main structures are complete. We’re currently working on the high-lift pumping station, which houses the pumps that will transport water to Inchaban and other pumping stations”.

Young actors revealed for Harry Potter TV series

Arabella Stanton, Dominic McLaughlin and Alastair Stout have been cast to play Hermione, Harry and Ron

HBO has announced the young actors who will play the lead trio in its TV series adaption of JK Rowling’s book series, Harry Potter.

Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

An open casting call for the roles was announced last year, and more than 30,000 children auditioned.

Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod said in a statement that “the talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen”.

The youngsters join John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, the school’s key professors being played by Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu, as Severus Snape.

Other confirmed actors in the series include Nick Frost as the affable groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as professor Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.

Further casting announcements are expected soon.

The three young actors taking on the roles played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who starred in the hugely successful films, are relative newcomers.

Scottish actor McLaughlin has acted in upcoming Sky comedy Grow, alongside Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, and will also appear in upcoming BBC action adventure series Gifted. Stanton played Matilda in Matilda: The Musical on the West End.

The bestselling books’ author, JK Rowling, will act as an executive producer on the show, which HBO has said will be a “faithful adaptation” of her books.

The TV series, which will span at least a decade, will have more breathing space to explore the plot lines from the books without the time constraints of the film.

Filming is expected to begin in the summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK and the first series could air as early as 2026 on HBO Max.
