The Member of Parliament for the Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, Ernest Yaw Anim, has organised free career guidance for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in the Sekyere Kumawu district.

Aside from the career guidance, which assembled facilitators to assist the candidates about how to answer examination questions, how to make proper selection of SHSs/TVET schools, the MP also donated mathematical sets to all the BECE candidates.

Ernest Yaw Anim said over the past two years, he had done a lot through various interventions to improve education.

The MP and his team advised the candidates to learn hard and shun examination malpractices. He encouraged the candidates to diligently apply themselves to their books and make families proud by securing good aggregates in the BECE.

The Member of Parliament for the Kumawu promised to cater for five candidates from each of the over 50 schools who will score aggregates 6 to 10 by providing them with free prospectus and mattresses.

The Kumawu MP commended the teachers, chiefs and other stakeholders in the district for continuously supporting the promotion of quality education.

Police Arrest 4 Persons for peddling in Narcotic Substances

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested four persons for peddling in narcotic substances in the Manso Adubea area in the Ashanti Region.

The Regional Commander, ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, while addressing the media last Tuesday, mentioned the names of the four suspects as Mohammed Iddrisu, 47, Dickson Fosuhene, alias Panda, 27, Cletus Nyaaba, 19, and Emmanuel Asare, 21.

He said Mohammed Iddrisu was found in possession of 550 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 82 sachets of 250 mg Tramol tablets and an amount of GHC11,340.

Ofosuhene Dickson and Emmanuel Asare were arrested with 120 wraps of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, 150 sachets of 250 mg Taramaking tablets and an amount of GHC12,000 – while Cletus Nyaaba was arrested with 150 wraps of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.

ACP Nyaaba stated that police intelligence also led to the house of one ‘Thunder’ believed to be the source of supplies of the contraband goods, but he absconded upon getting a hint of the operation.

He further stated that a search in his residence discovered 28 boxes of 250 mg Taramaking tablets, 54 boxes of 250 mg Timiking tablets, 22 slabs of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 374 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and a cash amount of GHC25,000. He stated that the suspects are being processed for court.

In a related development, the Regional Commander announced that the Fomena Police Command has found and taken custody of some arms and ammunition abandoned in a vehicle at Kwabenakwa, a suburb of Obuasi.

The found arms included two pump action guns, 23 rounds of AA ammunition and three rounds of BB ammunition.

ACP Nyaaba explained that police investigations revealed that the said vehicle was given on ‘spare drive’ by the owner to one Kwaku, alias Zador, to be returned in two days time.

He continued that when the deadline expired and the driver failed to return the vehicle, the owner went searching and located the vehicle at the spot and found the items in it.

The Regional Commander advised criminals that it is time they gave up on criminal activities and resort to decent means of livelihood as the police have intensified efforts to bring them to book.

Naira continues appreciation against dollar

Nigeria’s currency, the naira, continued to gain against the dollar across official and parallel foreign exchange markets on Tuesday.
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s exchange rate data showed that the naira rose further to N1,579.27 against the dollar on Tuesday from N1,581.58, which was traded on Monday.

This means that the naira strengthened by N2.31 on Tuesday from N1,581.58 exchanged on Monday.

Similarly, it was appreciated significantly, from N15 to N1,600 per dollar on Tuesday from 1615, exchanged on the previous day at the black market.

DAILY POST reports that the naira recorded significant FX markets on Monday.

The development comes as CBN’s deadline for the recapitalization of Bureau De Change Operators expired on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Despite occasional fluctuations, DAILY POST reports that the Naira has recorded relative stability in the last six months at the foreign exchange markets.

Defence Minister Links Boko Haram Resurgence To Sahel Crisis

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has linked the recent resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in Borno State to the group’s broader plan to destabilise the Sahel, affecting countries such as Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic.

Badaru stated this while addressing journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday, following a two-day working visit to key military institutions in the state.

These included the Buffalo Engineering Technical Services, the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

“There is a renewed vigour by the insurgents to destabilise the Sahel,” the minister said.

“We are doing a lot to curtail them, and if you will be fair to us, you’ll notice that in the past week or two, the armed forces have gained momentum—attacking and eliminating them. The serial attacks on soldiers’ camps have been reduced to the barest minimum.”

He assured that the Federal Government was working tirelessly to respond to growing security threats across the North-East and North-Central regions.

Speaking on the escalating violence in Benue State, Badaru explained that the crisis was mainly communal, driven by recurrent clashes between farmers and herders.

According to him, the situation requires a largely non-kinetic approach.

On the broader security landscape, the minister acknowledged that while significant gains had been recorded against banditry in the North-West, other regions continued to experience attacks, reflecting the evolving nature of insecurity in the country.

Expel Wike from PDP now –Tom FredFish

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State and Chairman, PDP Advocate for Peace and Justice (PAPAJ), Dr. Tom FredFish, has urged the party’s leaders to invoke constitutional provisions and expel the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from the party.

FresFish made the call on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Uyo. He was reacting to Wike’s assertion that no one has the power to expel him from the PDP.

While calling on the PDP to wield the big stick on Wike by moving swiftly to expel him, FredFish insisted that the minister has been working against the interests of the party in clear violation of the party’s constitution, ideals and principles.

The Akwa Ibom politician also faulted Wike’s claims that he is working hard for the PDP.

He said: “If Mr. Wike says he is working hard for the party, the right question that Nigerians should ask him is what kind of hard work is he doing for the PDP? Is the hard work positive or negative?

“How can a man who has been working against the interests of the party after he failed to clinch the PDP ticket in the 2023 presidential race still have the temerity to say he is working for the interest of the party? How can he say such a thing?

“Is he not the same Wike who openly worked against the PDP in the 2023 presidential election and further
connived with, encouraged and ordered the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly that are loyal to him to decamp to the APC and work against the interest of Rivers State controlled by the PDP?

”As far as the PDP Advocate for Peace and Justice is concerned, Mr. Wike was appointed to destroy the PDP and he’s doing the job very well. He should not expect party faithful across the country to clap for him for compromising the efforts of the party leadership.”

FredFish observed that “there is no one in the country that has de-marketed the PDP more than Wike who has continuously used demeaning words on the PDP and its leaders – the most recent is the way he spoke about the governor of Oyo State Mr. Seyi Makinde”.

Mokwa Flood: Declare environmental emergency       –HOMEF to Govt

The Health of Mother Earth Foundation, HOMEF, has asked the Nigerian government to declare an environmental state of emergency, expressing sympathy for families impacted by the recent deadly flood in Mokwa, Niger State, Nigeria.

HOMEF said while mourning the tragic loss of many residents, the government must take proactive measures to prevent similar or worse incidents from occurring in the future.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr Nnimmo Bassey, the environmental justice advocates advised communities and cities in flood-prone areas to exit if nothing is done to address this menace.

Dr Bassey told the government that there was no time for excuses in the face of such a tragic incident, warning that the flood can impact the national well-being of the country, leading to food scarcity, environmental degradation, mass displacement, increased poverty, water-borne diseases and exacerbating insecurity.

He said, ”This is a horrendous recurring decimal. There is no word to describe our lack of preparedness and our ill-maintained infrastructure, combined with insecurity and the fact that more rain is expected, the displacement problems will be compounded.

”Flooding has become a persistent nightmare in Nigeria. In 2012, floods affected 33 out of the 36 states following the rain that fell between July and October that year. The floods displaced over 2 million people, resulting in more than 400 deaths and other associated destruction.

”In 2018, the Benue and Niger rivers overflowed due to heavy rainfall, causing flooding in 12 states, including Kogi and Niger. Four years later, in 2022, another severe flood killed over 600 individuals, displacing more than 2 million others. The impacts of these floods have been catastrophic for communities and states.

Reacting to forecasts and early warnings from different agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency
NEMA, Dr Bassey expressed disappointment, noting that the warnings are meaningless if provisions are not made to move people and settle them on safe and higher grounds.

Car Dealer allegedly Defrauds New Weija Chief of GH¢85,000 Over Range Rover Deal

A 61-year-old car dealer, Emmanuel Reginald Lamptey, appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court yesterday facing two counts of fraud and forgery in connection with a 2017 car sale that allegedly turned out to be a scam.

The accused, a resident of Osu, was charged with defrauding by false pretence and forgery of official documents, contrary to Sections 131 and 158 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), respectively.

He, however, pleaded not guilty before the presiding judge, Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.

According to court documents presented by Inspector Esther Mensah, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, Mr. Lamptey defrauded Nii Boafo Dangina-Nse, a sub-chief (Djase) of New Weija of GH¢85,000 under the pretext of selling to him a genuine Range Rover vehicle.

The incident reportedly occurred in November 2017 when Alhaji Farouk Moro, a mutual acquaintance of both the complainant and the accused introduced Nii Dangina-Nse to an unregistered Range Rover that Lamptey was selling.

After inspecting the vehicle, the complainant agreed to purchase it for GH¢85,000 making an initial payment of GH¢70,000 and later paid the remaining GH¢15,000 for registration.

However, after handing over the vehicle, Lamptey allegedly issued the complainant a fake DVLA registration form and license plate—GC 2108-14.

It was not until 2024 that the vehicle was intercepted by customs officials, who found that the chassis number had been tampered with.

The complainant lodged an official report with the Odorkor Police on April 22, 2025, after years of unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter.

During police interrogation, Lamptey claimed the car was brought to him by a third party, one Osei Tutu, whose whereabouts are currently unknown.

He also alleged that the complainant was aware the car was a transit vehicle at the time of purchase.

Following his plea of not guilty to both charges, the court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢90,000 with two sureties, both to be justified.

As part of his bail conditions, he must deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report to the police every two weeks.

The case is scheduled for Case Management Conference (CMC) on June 28, 2025 during which the prosecution will file disclosures and witness statements.

1,184 BECE Candidates in Western Region empowered through ‘Yes We Can’ pep talk tour

A total of 1,184 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from 23 schools across the Western Region have benefitted from the 8th edition of the ‘Yes We Can’ Pep Talk Tour, which concluded at Young Christian School in Takoradi, the alma mater of the initiative’s convener, Nana Kwesi Coomson.

Held from Monday, 26th May to Friday, 30th May 2025, the week-long outreach initiative engaged final-year Junior High School students with practical motivation, career inspiration, and confidence-building techniques in preparation for their first external exams.

Speaking at the final session, Coomson reflected on the origin of the project:

“I remember walking into the BECE room years ago, completely frightened. I had no idea what to expect. After overcoming that fear and excelling, I made a promise to help others facing the same anxiety. ‘Yes We Can’ is my way of keeping that promise — sharing my strategy and bringing others with powerful stories and experience to guide the next generation.”

The sessions were led by a dynamic group of speakers who shared personal stories, academic tips, and lessons in leadership and self-confidence. The Speakers include; Yaa Amoako Adu, CEO of Apave Ghana Inspection, Charlotte Derban, CEO of Swift Breakfast and Lunch & alumna of Nav West and Western Command, Anthony Botwe, General Manager, Corpnation Foundation, Haruna Babangida, Radio Presenter with Melody FM, Manfred Darko Konadu, Proprietor of Legacy Pre University, Nana Ama Divine, Founder of Divine Education Watch, Jeffrey Adu-Mante, Agricultural Engineering Student, KNUST and Nana Kwesi Coomson (NKC), the Convener.

Organised by 233times.net in partnership with Spice FM, the initiative continues to be one of the most impactful pre-BECE support programs in the region. In addition to the pep-talk, female students benefitted from free distribution of sanitary pads from Virtuous Boardroom and also, Mr. Kwame Adu-Mante, the CEO of Spice FM gave mathematical sets to the Candidates.

Sean “Diddy” Combs paid a hotel security officer to hand over surveillance footage that showed the hip-hop mogul violently attacking his then-girlfriend Casandra Ventura, in a hallway, the officer testified on Tuesday at Combs’ sex trafficking trial.

Eddy Garcia, who had worked at an Intercontinental hotel, told jurors that Combs contacted him shortly after the incident and asked for the footage. Combs said he would “take care” of Garcia if he gave him the video, Garcia said.

Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five counts, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan say Combs over two decades, coerced women, including Ventura, to take part in drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.”

Jurors had previously been shown a March 2016 surveillance video from the hallway of the Intercontinental hotel in Los Angeles where Combs, wearing only a towel, threw Ventura to the ground, kicked her and dragged her away

Ventura said the incident occurred after Combs had given her a black eye during a “Freak Off.”

Garcia said he relayed Combs’ message about the video to his boss, who told him he would give Combs the video in exchange for $50,000.

He said the boss gave him a USB drive, which he gave to Combs, who later returned with a brown bag and a money counter.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday conferred one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), on Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates, recognising his contributions to global health and development.

The ceremony, held in Lagos, marked a key highlight of Gates’ ongoing visit to Nigeria, where he is engaging with federal and state leaders on critical issues, including reforms in primary healthcare.

“Bill Gates’ commitment to global health and innovation has transformed countless lives across Africa and the world,” President Tinubu said during the presentation.

Gates, chairman of the Gates Foundation, expressed gratitude for the honour and emphasised the importance of collaboration with Nigerian partners to strengthen the country’s health systems.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, also attended the ceremony, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts between the private and public sectors.

Gates’ visit follows the Foundation’s recent announcement of a $200 billion investment over the next 20 years to advance global health and development—a commitment Gates described as part of his pledge to donate “virtually all of his wealth” to philanthropic causes.

During his stay, Gates is scheduled to participate in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, focusing on Africa’s innovation future, and to meet with local experts advancing Nigeria’s national strategy on artificial intelligence and health solutions.
