Future-ready leader must demonstrate honesty, accountability- Sir Jonah

0
Sir Sam E. Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast

Sir Sam E. Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, says a future-ready leader must demonstrate honesty, empathy, accountability and trustworthiness.

He said the people must find in the leaders a model of respect and reliability, fairness and consistency.

Sir Jonah was speaking at the Academic City University’s Class of 2025 graduation ceremony in Accra, where 124 students were awarded various degrees.

The graduation was on the theme: “Future-Ready Leadership for Nation Building.”

He said integrity was key but without truthfulness and transparency, no man nor woman worth their salt would consider them a valued colleague, let alone a leader.

He said the most enduring trait of any true leader was his or her character, which is the sum of values and ethics that guide a leaders decisions and actions.

“The future will test your integrity. You will face the temptation to compromise to cut corners, to bend truth, to lie through gritted teeth; to serve self rather than the country,” he said.

The Chancellor said character was the currency that never lost its value and when an individual was known for honesty, for fairness, for keeping their word, people would follow them, trust them, and invest in them.

“Therefore, let integrity be your compass, compassion be your instinct and discipline be your shield,” he added.

Sir Jonah said Africa did not need more people with power, money or fame but rather it needed more people with character.

He urged the students to let every decision, every job, every risk they took be anchored in that purpose to give their leadership meaning.

“Your team, be it large or small, must trust and see you take ownership of your decisions and actions,” he said.

The Chancellor said the future-ready leader would not condone dereliction of duty nor abandon their team during difficult times.

He urged the students to stay focused, resilient, imaginative, innovative, and lead their team to safety and prosperity.

He called on the students to be intentional about making a good impression and building good relationships.

“Take no fellowship nor meeting for granted,” he added.

Professor Fred McBagonluri, President of Academic City University, said this was the first graduating class of the University since the Presidential Charter.

He said it was not always the fastest or the loudest that survive life’s trials, but the intentional, steady, and tactically reactive.

He said the 2025 graduation was the University’s highest graduating class ever and among them were the first graduates in Artificial Intelligence.

“First undergraduates in Robotics Engineering, perhaps in the history of Sub-Saharan Africa. You are not just shakers, you are bold movers,” he said.

Africanus Owusu Ansah (Hot Issues)

How does one answer a call from Agnes, a sister in France asking: “Ce qui ce passe au Ghana maintenant?”  What is happening in Ghana now? The best answer evasive or unrelated – to the question: power is transient. Politicians want to be treated differently like Kings and Queens; forget about ex-Chief Justice, Torkonoo (the law is the law) “in camera” in her case, should be “in public”.

Then you recall what happened in the trial of Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John) and his counsel Ayikoi Otoo.. Justice Dotse asked AyikoiOtoo whether he enquired from Sir John the cause of his behaviour on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 with the reprehensible attack on the presiding judges of the panel of nine judges hearing the 2012 election petition case. Ayikoi replied that his client (Sir John) had been possessed by “Gbeshi”, a spirit that one has no control over when he is possessed.

Justice Atuguba had to keep his “blood pressure in check” upon the advice of (then) Doctor AyikoiOtoo, to relieve Sir John and Hopeson Adorye from the charge of contempt, with a fine of GH¢5,000 and an apology to the Bench. Ayikoi, Esq. had even requested the court to set Sir John and HopesonAdorye free as a birthday gift to him. Our friend, Sir John’s family do not have to worry too much being the beneficiaries of a huge estate left in late Sir John’s will: plots of land at Achimota Forest 10 Houses, 10 Petrol Tankers, a filling station, cash in local and foreign banks.

Ironically, on a similar charge, the erudite lawyer for Ken Kuranchie, the Editor of Daily Searchlight, Atta Akyea, Esq, expatiating “law” got his client jailed for 10 days for contempt. Ken Kuranchie did not show any remorse while in the dock, having been well-tutored by his lawyer. Ken has now resigned from the NPP and is floating independently at Okaikwei North Constituency.

Fast-forward: what were the honourable NPP men of our respectable Parliament doing on the premises of EOCO, sitting on the bare floor? Remonstrance, Demurrer. Is  that what their constituents had voted for them to do? “O, Judgment thou art fled to brutish beasts and men have lost their reason” (Marcus Antonius) to “show power” and demonstrate “unflinching solidarity” to Bernard Antwi Boasiako (“Chairman Wontumi”)?

EOCO had granted Chairman Wontumi bail; the “condition” – 2 sureties to be justified; property worth GH¢50m. His alleged crimes: fraud; causing financial loss to the state; and money laundering. Running simultaneously with asset recovery processes – to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime.

The minority in Parliament says the investigation is “politically motivated”? — not even talking of the alleged galamsey operations of Akonta Mines? And the man who put in a bid to purchase England’s Chelsea Football Club could not guarantee his own bail condition of GH¢50m (peanuts, he could have said while displaying the bars of gold on Television!). What about other Regional NPP Chairman and the National Chairmen?

Well, thanks to Bryan Acheampong for his timely intervention (he has shown why he wanted to build the burnt Kejetia market) and note that Bryan is not expected to pay the GH¢50m, except and until Wontumi escapes from the law! Bryan is the toast of NPP for his show of love  being in contention for the NPP flagbearership and who can exclude Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong for living the message in Matthew 25:35 – “For I was an hungered (hungry) and ye gave me meat (food), I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger and ye took me in”.

Now, with Wontumi out of the EOCO cells, the tussle between Andy Appiah-Kubi and Gary Nimako should cease; we do not want to hear our friend, Gary repeat: “I spoke with him before applying (for a variation of the ball conditions) and he later came out to say the process had been frustrated, which was unfair … I have blocked his (Andy Appiah – Kubi’s) number ”

And the OSP is to open the book on Cecilia Dapaah’s over $1m under the bed. Disregard Paul Adom Otchere’s defence of funeral donations; then go to Ken Ofori Atta a platform to exonerate himself or you want to do “equalization”?

Do we not love NPP again? Jimmy Cliff in “House of Exile” sings “ A drowning man will catch at a straw. You were warned but you wouldn’t take heed. Everything in creation must obey a law. It’s true in words as it is deed”.

Ken Ofori Atta had, intimated to the Office of the Special Prosecutor that he would appear before them on 2nd June, 2025 as part of investigations into five allegations of graft during his tenure as Finance Minister under Akufo-Addo. The charges: the Contracts between Ghana Revenue Authority and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana  Limited (SML); the procurement processes and financial transactions linked to the construction of the National Cathedral (so far GH¢58 million spent on digging a hole),  a contract with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the acquisition and maintenance of 307 ambulances; the cancellation of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC); reviewing the handling and distribution of funds from the Tax Pension-Fund Account (hair-cut).

One is tempted to ask: who ordered government vehicles (including State Transport Company ones) to be insured by other companies apart from State Insurance (Enterprise Insurance Company on our mind). How much was earned by Data Bank as commission taken from government loan; was Ofori Atta not taking a salary as he told Parliament Appointments Committee: “I suspect you know that the issue of public service is one that really has been with the family (Ofori Atta family) for a long time and I come into it with that aspect. I do not take a salary. I do not take per diem, so those are not the objectives that I come with”.

When about 88 NPP MPs requested the President Akufo-Addo to sack Ofori Atta, he (the President) was in Tamale saying it was NDC who were agitating for his ouster, Eugene Antwi, NPP MP for Subin stated in October, 2022; ” … we had to demonstrate to him (Akufo-Addo) that our constituents had sent us to come and deliver to him a very very cold message that Ken Ofori- Atta must be asked to step aside. “In his “tintin-tininti” posture, the President would not “yield”. No “positive feedback” from Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

People accusing the OSP of not pulling his weight. They forget that the OSP is a haunted house with Martin Amidu, the first Special Prosecutor resigning (out of frustration?) and declaring President Nana Akufo-Addo, as “master serpent of corruption”.

You think the OSP’s work is “easy”. Ask “Ankwaanoma” man why he sang that lamentable song: “…mereyeneametumi, me mmre so a, nameko… (… do what I can, leave when my time is up).

US President, Donald Trump, in 2015 called Haiti, El Salvador and African countries “shithole” preferring people from Norway into the U.S.A.  African Union would show its “infuriation, disappointment and outrage”, but…

Lawyer Osei Kwabena - the writer

“Never was the voice of conscience silenced without retribution” – Anna Jameson.

In the 2020 general elections, each of the two main political parties, NPP and NDC, had an equal number of seats in Parliament. Thus, the deciding factor as to which side ‘carries the day’ fell on the independent candidate for Fomena in Ashanti. This MP had earlier been vilified by his ‘erstwhile’ party he loved so much, NPP, who declared him persona non grata amid an array of accusations.

Added, he was virtually sacked from Parliament, stripped of his “immunities”, declared the dark horse or is it “Oyuotumtum – dark deer,” amongst others.

To add insult to injury, the then President, Addo Show Boy, characteristic of him, openly, l mean without blinking an eye, and forgetting there was a tomorrow and that anything can and could happen, declared him to the hearing of my two Obama look-like ears and that of all and sundry that, there was no way he and by extension his Party, NPP, could work with him – not today, the day before nor the days thereafter – he can go and hang himself, after all, his name was already in the good books of Jesus Christ, having his bid to become a Catholic priest some years back botched.

According to the then minority Chief whip, now Minister for Interior, Mubarak Mutaka, all was set for this rejected cum dual disappointed gentleman (failed in his bid to be a Catholic Priest and, again, to represent the good people of Fomena on the ticket of NPP) to align himself with the other side, NDC, when BAM, BAM, BAM, a powerful Chief, without mentioning his or her name (sorry ooo, Chiefs are predominantly males) intervened, persuaded, coaxed, enticed, influenced, lured, coerced the MP to rather align with his parent Party who had earlier thrown him into the dustbin.

Will not expatiate further but granting Mutaka’s assertion holds, then that Chief has done a great disservice not only to the good people of Ghana but to humanity and generations unborn.

Personally, l believe that if that had happened – majority in Parliament coming from the opposition Party with an Executive President from the other side, more especially when Addo Show boy, aka, Joe Boy, was behind the steering wheel – what a what? Ghanaians to me, would have experienced the best form and type of governance which would have inured not only to our collective good but would also have enhanced and boosted our democracy, but NO, a Chief without consulting his gods, elders, obi – personal god, fetish, priestess, subjects, sat his somewhere and twisted history – ɛneyɛnnnɛ – things went haywire with their ‘y’ɛnntieobiara’ posturing – who cause am? – the powerful Chief.

This golden opportunity bestowed on Ghanaians by God in his infinite wisdom to redeem us from the shackles of ‘me nntieobiara’ was just spirited away by a Chief for no apparent reason but for the fact that he was a powerful Chief.

This reminds me of my no nonsense Headmaster, the late Peter Owusu Donkor, aka, Bushmeat of Opoku Ware School, (OWASS) fame.

l recall with nostalgia, our and his days at OWASS. One could not just fool and expect a shameless Chief to plead on his behalf. l learnt lately that students even go to school armed to the teeth, beat up teaching staff etc.

Mepa wo ky3w, to wit, forgive me, wasn’t in Bushmeat’s vocabulary. He will have none of that, he will ensure that one paid dearly for whatever misdeeds committed. Bushmeat is on record to have not only openly chastised Chiefs who came to his office pleading on behalf of erring students but “relocated” his own son to a less endowed school to save the generality of the student populace – “Otani nya wo naonkuwoa, hw3 ne baaniase”, kind of examples.

Bushmeat’s crusade did not end there. At morning assemblies at the Foya, he continued his chastisement without mentioning names but we knew them. Telephones and other means of instantaneous communication were not common during that era, so these “Beggar Chiefs” were sighted with their umbrellas on the corridors of the main Admin block and we knew the bad boys they were there to intercede on their behalf – Bravo, Bushmeat.

Why this long prologue? The President, John Dramani Mahama (JDM), has hinted that he will not intervene and or interfere in the ongoing investigations, prosecutions and what nots of persons alleged to have engaged in corrupt practices and other malfeasance which have cost and caused the country dearly. They must “go and remove their mouths” without any “external interventions”.

Yah, JDM has done it before, exemplified in the cases of Abuga Pele and Victoria Hammer. l have total faith in his unpredictability, subject to he delivering, when it comes to matters of corruption and other acts detrimental to Ghanaians but, A BIG BUT – Will Nananom, as discussed and mentioned earlier, the Clergy, so called eminent Ghanaians, family members, friends, Party faithfuls, School/Class mates allow him to be on his own?

Already, there are hints of influential persons canvassing, yah, parading the corridors of power to overtly tame some crimes – they have no shame. Thankfully, the Dormaahene seems not to have anything to do with these Nation wreckers and has urged the President to crack the whip. My prayer akin with the prayers of most Ghanaians is, Nananom and the likes tow Dormaahene’s example and make a public commitment not to go “abegging” for whoever and for whatever reason (s).

My training tells me that when you act as a referee for a person, you are invariably suggesting the sort of person you are – show me your friend and I shall tell you your character.

Paradoxically, even before suspects are summoned, some have started singing like canary birds, to wit, IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANY OF US. If you have nothing to hide, why that lamentation, aka, CRY YOUR OWN CRY, alias, DI ASEM PA NA GYAE WO TIRI BISA or is an issue of Onipabonefodwaneabre a, obiaanta no.

Be it known to Nananom, the Clergy, so called eminent Ghanaians and those prone to begging that Ghanaians are fed up with them and shall spit red saliva at the opportune hour. They all were privy when the numerous scandals were being perpetuated and unearthed – no wonder, some are neck deep in the $58 million Cathedral saga.

In some instances, they were even approached to use their good office to halt some of these “atrocities” but they declined under the pretext of DI WO FIE ASEM – WHY THEN & NOW? They kept mute even when we were faced with existential threats amid babies being born with eyes on the forehead, six or more fingers/toes, kidney issues which are increasing at an increasing rate, among others.

As the Akans will say, “S3 w’anyabiribianma wase a, yentwa y3 hommo no krono”, to wit, if you have nothing good for vulnerable, poor and susceptible Ghanaians, the least you can do for them is not to offend their sensibilities by going “abegging” for persons who are accused of crimes against the State and have inflicted such pain and untold hardships on majority of Ghanaians.

This “Fama Nyame”, “enyehwee”, “To “air” is human”, “It Can Happen To One Of Us”, “Because s/he is from this or that stock”, have been our bane. This has consistently and persistently been championed by none, but the aforementioned. This “nonsense” must cease forthwith.

Long time l heard of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and I am doubtful if they still exist. Be it as it may, l will urge them to mount a sustainable campaign on the ills and legal ramifications of the activities of this Beggars Bridge – that their actions and inaction are akin to perverting justice, is a criminal offence for which they could be charged therewith – an example must be set out of this Beggars Brigade.

This time around, we as Ghanaians are making a passionate appeal to them, Beggars Brigade, to STAY OFF, ALLOW THE LAW TO WORK, for The Law Is The Law. There are very good Lawyers around to make NO CASE for them.

Some of the revelations are just nauseating and heart breaking. One is thus tempted to ask if they are humans, indeed, born of a woman.

l shall refrain and restrain myself from going ballistic, else l would have sent an SOS message to all the River gods in all the sixteen Regions to strike them on sight. Interestingly, before these River goddesses could strike, there was a pre-emptive strike by these looters to neutralize the efficacy of all the River gods through their illicit gold mining activities, galamsey.

How wicked can they be?

Hearts beat Samartex

Hearts of Oak ended the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season on a high after beating Samartex on Sunday.

Konadu Yiadom scored the only goal of the game for the Phobians as they picked up a 1-0 win.

Aboubakar Ouattara’s side came into the game on the back of five unbeaten games, winning three and drawing the other two.

Samartex, on the other hand, had lost two of their last five games, winning the remaining three.

Hearts of Oak made a great start to the game but their attacking threats were thwarted by the defensive line of the Timber Giants.

The two teams went into the break with nothing to separate them and the scoreline at 0-0.

However, it didn’t take long for the Phobians to take the lead as Yiadom found the back of the net.

His goal fired the team into fourth position at the end of the season with Kotoko dropping out following their defeat to Vision FC in Accra.

Hearts finished five points behind league winners Bibiani GoldStars.

Dreams FC players

Dreams FC wrapped up their 2024/25 Ghana Premier League campaign in style with a commanding 4-1 victory over relegated Legon Cities at the Tuba AstroTurf.

The Still Believe boys took an early lead in the 15th minute through Jonathan Nemorden, who fired home a powerful strike from outside the box after a well-worked team move.

Just three minutes later, Joseph Esso doubled the lead for the hosts. He rounded the goalkeeper with ease before slotting the ball into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Dreams FC almost added a third before the break when Nemorden and Esso linked up on a counterattack, but Nemorden’s final pass narrowly missed his teammate.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with Dreams FC dominating possession. Their pressure paid off in the 65th minute when Suraj Seidu headed in from a delightful Marshah Kofi cross to make it 3-0.

Nemorden completed his in the 75th minute, finishing off another fluid attacking move to put Dreams FC 4-0 up.

Legon Cities managed a late consolation in the 87th minute, as Albert Adoma converted from the penalty spot to make it 4-1.

The win sees Dreams FC finish the season in 6th place with 52 points, while Legon Cities bow out of the top flight in 17th with just 35 points.

Vision FC defeat Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko have ended the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League in fifth following their 3-1 defeat to Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.

After an uneventful few minutes of exchanges, it was the Porcupines who drew first blood in the 38th minute through midfielder Emmanuel Antwi whose first-time left-footed effort took a deflection into the bottom left corner.

Edmond Asante emerged from the bench to poke home from close range to restore parity in the 40th minute.

Frank Duku then put Vision ahead in the 81st minute before adding his second in injury time to claim three points for the hosts and shatter any hope of a comeback from Kotoko.

it was Kotoko’s first defeat under head coach Karim Zito.

However, they have the FA Cup final on June 15 against Golden Kicks with hopes of finishing the season on a high.

Meanwhile, Vision finish the season 11th with 45 points on their first attempt in the top-flight.

Gold Stars players celebrate league win

Bibiani Gold stars clinched their maiden Ghana Premier League title after a scintillating 4-0 home win over Accra Lions on the final day.

Gold Stars had one job to do; secure a win and hope Nations FC failed to match their result. They took to the task in style.

Head Coach Frimpong Manso opted for an attacking setup, signaling intent from the outset and it paid dividends early. Just four minutes in, Abdul Farouk Amoaful opened the scoring with a composed close-range finish to give the Miners a dream start.

The pressure didn’t ease and in the 19th minute, their dominance was rewarded again.

A fluid team move ended with Kelvin Oppong calmly slotting home their second goal, sending the DUNS Park crowd into raptures. The atmosphere only intensified when word filtered in from Abrankese: Nations FC, Gold Stars’ title rivals, were trailing at home to Heart of Lions.

The second half picked up right where the first left off, with Gold Stars continuing to threaten the Accra Lions’ defense.

Around the hour mark, Manso made a tactical double change – goalscorer Amoaful and Justice Arthur made way for Godfred Arthur and Charles Kamara Gyamfi, aiming to maintain the attacking edge.

Then came the moment that electrified the stadium—a roar erupted as it was announced that Heart of Lions had doubled their lead against Nations FC.

Seconds later, Bibiani’s star forward Samuel Atta Kumi capped it off, firing home a third goal that all but sealed Gold Stars’ first-ever Ghana Premier League title.

Coach Frimpong Manso’s side will have their highly impressive home form to thank for this historic feat, losing just once at the DUNS Park all season, with just 5 goals conceded in 17 games.

Pastor Entangled in GH¢130,000 Land Fraud Allegations

0

A 48-year-old pastor, David Doe Kwaku, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, for allegedly defrauding a Ghanaian nurse based in the United States of America of a total of GH¢130,000.00 under the pretext of securing land.

Pastor Kwaku, who resides at Dawhenya near Tema, is facing two counts of defrauding by false pretence, contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). He pleaded not guilty when he made his first appearance on June 4, 2025. He was previously scheduled to appear on June 2, but failed to show up, prompting an adjournment.

The court has granted him bail in the sum of GH¢150,000.00, with three sureties — two of whom must be public servants residing within the court’s jurisdiction and earning no less than GH¢5,000.00, and one justified with title deeds equivalent to the bail amount. The accused has also been ordered to deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and to report weekly to the police until further notice.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, outlined the allegations as follows:

Count One: In 2018, the accused allegedly obtained GH¢70,000.00 from the complainant, Senyo Tsakpoe Nelson, under the false claim that he could secure a parcel of land near Central University, Tema. Pastor Kwaku is said to have made the claim knowing it to be false and failed to provide any documentation or land despite repeated demands over a two-year period.

Count Two: In 2023, the pastor allegedly convinced the same complainant to part with an additional GH¢60,000.00 for a different parcel of land located at Abbey, Dawhenya. This transaction also failed to yield any tangible results, with the land remaining untraceable and no documentation produced.

The court heard that Mr. Tsakpoe, a Ghanaian nurse currently residing in the United States, had entrusted Justice Amenuveve Agboh, a teacher based in Dome, Accra, with power of attorney to act on his behalf. According to the prosecution, Pastor Kwaku, who was once a close friend of the complainant, took advantage of that trust to orchestrate both fraudulent land transactions.

Following years of failed promises and unverifiable claims, the complainant’s wife — who witnessed the payments — urged him to cease dealings with the accused. Suspecting fraud, Mr. Tsakpoe instructed his attorney-in-fact to report the matter to the police in March 2025.

Investigations revealed that Pastor Kwaku was already in custody in Aveyime, Volta Region, for a similar fraud case. A wireless alert from the Accra Regional CID led to his transfer to Accra on March 18, 2025. After being granted police inquiry bail, the accused failed to comply with the conditions and went into hiding.

On May 30, 2025, with the assistance of the complainant, police re-arrested Pastor Kwaku from his hideout. During interrogation, the accused admitted in his cautioned statement that he collected GH¢92,000.00 from the complainant to secure land, though the full amount in question totals GH¢130,000.00.

The court has ordered the prosecution to file all disclosures and witness statements by August 4, 2025, ahead of the Case Management Conference (CMC).

The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.

Trader Remanded for Faking Robbery After Allegedly Stealing US$60,000

0
Remanded

Two traders, Mustapha Mohammed and Dauda Mohammed, have been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court over allegations of stealing US$60,000 that was entrusted to them for business purposes.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing, abetment of crime, and deceiving a public officer during a court session held on June 4, 2025.

The presiding judge, Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, ordered the accused to be remanded in police custody and adjourned the case to June 16, 2025.

Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye, prosecuting, told the court that on May 22, 2025, the complainant, Hassan Muntari, a businessman based in Awoshie, handed over US$60,000 to the first accused, Mustapha Mohammed, under the impression that it was to be delivered to a contractor in Achimota. The amount was to be returned in Ghana cedi equivalent (GH¢720,000.00).

According to the prosecution, Mustapha claimed the contractor needed the funds urgently. However, after receiving the money around midday at Okaishie, Mustapha failed to return as agreed.

Repeated attempts by the complainant to reach him were unsuccessful. Later, Mustapha claimed he had been robbed by four men on two motorbikes and was receiving treatment at Achimota Hospital.

When questioned by police at the Achimota School Police Station, Mustapha alleged the robbery took place around 6:30 p.m. on the same day. However, further investigations revealed inconsistencies in his account. An itemised phone bill showed he had not been at Achimota as claimed. Nearby hawkers also denied witnessing any robbery.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the second accused, Dauda Mohammed, who confessed to involving Mustapha in the scheme. Dauda claimed he needed the money to clear goods at the Tema Harbour and had promised to return it with interest after selling the items.

However, Dauda and another accomplice, Zakaru Musah (currently at large), allegedly took the money to a spiritualist known only as “Mallam” (also at large), claiming the Mallam could “double” the money. Both Zakaru and the Mallam disappeared with the cash.

After realising they had been duped, Dauda reportedly advised Mustapha to fake a robbery. Mustapha then inflicted an injury on himself and went to the hospital before filing a false report to the police.

Mustapha now faces three charges: stealing under Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, abetment of crime, and deceiving a public officer under Section 251 of the same Act. Dauda is charged with abetment of crime.

The police are continuing investigations and efforts are underway to apprehend Zakaru Musah and the Mallam, both of whom remain at large.

Confidence tricksters defraud Mzbel of GH¢800k and £30,000 in recruitment scam

0
Mzbel

Ghanaian Hiplife musician, Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has become the latest victim of a high-profile fraud scheme involving a promise of overseas employment for Ghanaian youth.

The case was brought before the Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, June 5, 2025, presided over by His Honour Jojo Amoah Hagan.

The court heard that Mzbel was defrauded of GH¢829,637.00 and £30,028.53 by a syndicate led by Janice Inez Mensah, who is currently at large.

Two alleged accomplices, Japheth Tete Mensah, aged 44, a driver, and Bernard Boakye Boateng, aged 34, a hotelier, have both been arrested and arraigned.

They face charges of abetment of crime namely defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Sections 20(1) and 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Both accused pleaded not guilty and have been granted bail to Japheth Tete Mensah – GH¢100,000 bail and Bernard Boakye Boateng – GH¢500,000 bail.

Each is to present two sureties, with at least one surety to be justified with title deeds.

The Scheme

According to facts presented by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, Janice Inez Mensah, a UK-based Ghanaian and long-time friend of Mzbel, proposed a scheme to help young Ghanaians secure employment in the United Kingdom in fields such as caregiving, salon work, and construction.

Mzbel, believing in the authenticity of the offer, advertised the opportunity through her Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram platforms, ultimately mobilizing 26 of her followers.

Between March and May 2025, Mzbel and the recruited individuals transferred large sums of money to Janice and her associates.

Investigations by Detective Sergeant James Kwesi Turkson revealed that GH¢447,590.00 was deposited into the account of Bernard Boakye Boateng and GH¢75,443.00 was deposited into the account of Japheth Tete Mensah.

These funds were later withdrawn or disbursed without any jobs being secured for the applicants. Japheth Tete Mensah has since refunded GH¢10,000.00 to the police as investigations continue.

The Charges

The court has brought three main counts against the accused:

Count 1: Japheth Tete Mensah is accused of abetting Janice Inez Mensah to defraud Mzbel of GH¢75,433.33

Count 2: Bernard Boakye Boateng is accused of abetting Janice to defraud Mzbel of GH¢447,590.00

Count 3: Janice Inez Mensah, the principal suspect (currently at large), is accused of defrauding Mzbel by false pretences to obtain GH¢829,637.00 and £30,028.53

What’s Next

The court adjourned the case to July 14, 2025, for further investigations and proceedings. Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend Janice Inez Mensah, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

Mzbel has not yet issued a public statement following the court hearing but is believed to be cooperating fully with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
