One Dead, Dozens Displaced in Violent Chieftaincy Clash at Asemkow –Butre

A longstanding chieftaincy dispute between two sister communities – Asemkow and Butre – in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region has erupted into violent clashes, leaving one person dead, several others injured and hundreds displaced.
The Chief of Butre, Nana Egya Butia, reportedly sustained cutlass wounds during the skirmishes and is currently battling for his life at the Dixcove Hospital.

A victim of machete attack battling for his life

Several houses at Asemkow have been set ablaze, forcing many residents to flee for their lives. Asemkow is now a ghost village, given the rise in the number of women and children, plus men, who have deserted the once vibrant fishing community.
Information gathered by The Chronicle indicates that the violence stems from a protracted dispute over Asemkow’s bid to separate from Butre as a Divisional Stool.

A group of Asemkow indigenes petitioned the Ahanta Traditional Council (ATC) to recognise Asemkow as an independent community. However, the petition was dismissed.
The group subsequently appealed to the Western Regional House of Chiefs (WRHC), but the appeal was also thrown out, heightening tensions between the two communities.
The situation is said to have reached boiling point on Monday, when the Chief of Butre and his entourage reportedly visited Asemkow.

Their presence reportedly provoked anger among some residents, leading to an attack on the chief and his entourage.
According to security sources, the chief was the target, but he managed to escape, despite sustaining machete injuries on his arm, but one of his aides was killed in the melee.
In retaliation, a group from Butre stormed Asemkow, torching houses and destroying properties. Many families were attacked and displaced as a result.

Sylvester Eshun, a Catechist and resident of Asemkow, narrated his ordeal to reporters.
“My wife, children and mother escaped by canoe. My provision store, hair salon, electrical gadgets, Bible, robes, passport, documents and money, everything has been burnt. I have nothing left apart from the clothes I’m wearing,” he said.

A taxi driver, Sylvester, added that virtually every house in Asemkow had been destroyed, leaving residents homeless and uncertain about their future.
“It’s heartbreaking to see our people turn against each other over matters that could have been resolved peacefully,” he lamented.

Another burnt house

Meanwhile, the Ahanta West Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and the Western Regional Police Command have visited the scene. Three persons have been picked up in connection with the incident.
An aide to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) said his boss, together with the Divisional and Regional Police Commanders, assessed the situation on the ground.

National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) he added is also expected to visit to evaluate the extent of the damage and provide relief to affected residents and victims.

Ghana needs bigger venues to support growing concert demand –Event Factory

Ethan Laurence

Ethan Laurence, the Production Manager for Event Factory, has shared insights into the challenges his team faced during the setup for Sarkodie’s Rapperholic Homecoming Concert at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Speaking in an interview on The Chat with Ekow Koomson on Channel One TV on October 4, Laurence explained that while the event was a huge success, the production process came with several logistical difficulties particularly in terms of space and infrastructure.

He revealed that the team had to navigate tight working conditions and limited setup areas, which made preparations for such a large-scale concert demanding and time-consuming.

Laurence emphasised the need for Ghana to invest in larger, purpose-built event spaces that can comfortably accommodate major concerts and large gatherings.

“We go through a lot during event setups because of limited space and infrastructure. Ghana really needs bigger venues to support the growing demand for large-scale concerts,” he noted.

He further highlighted that with the rapid growth of the entertainment industry and the increasing demand for high-quality productions, expanding the country’s event infrastructure would greatly enhance the overall concert experience for both artists and audiences.

The Rapperholic Homecoming Concert, produced by Event Factory, drew massive crowds and received praise for its impressive stage design, lighting, and overall execution despite the challenges faced.

Three killed in latest Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Belgorod region

The governor of Belgorod shared images showing the aftermath of the latest attack

Three people have been killed and at least nine others injured in Ukraine’s latest attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod, according to its governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov.

The strike hit the village of Maslova Pristan early on Wednesday, Gladkov said. Emergency workers were searching for people feared trapped under rubble.

It is the third consecutive day Ukraine has struck the region, leaving thousands of people without power and at least two others dead.

Ukraine has not commented on the attacks but has repeatedly struck targets inside Russia, including Belgorod, during the war.

Russian strikes also caused power outages in several Ukrainian regions, Ukraine’s energy regulator said.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As winter approaches, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia is targeting Ukraine’s critical energy-generating facilities, while Kyiv has been targeting key Russian oil refineries.

Wednesday’s series of drone and missile attacks damaged homes, vehicles and power lines in multiple districts of Belgorod, Gladkov wrote on Telegram.

He shared photographs from Maslova Pristan showing a sports centre with its roof and walls blown apart, and said rescue workers were clearing debris and assessing the damage.

The strikes follow two days of similar attacks that have caused blackouts and structural damage in Belgorod city and surrounding areas. Videos verified by BBC Verify showed explosions and fires near a local power station late on Tuesday.

Nearly 40,000 residents were affected by power cuts across seven municipalities, according to Gladkov.

Trump calls for jailing of Illinois governor and Chicago mayor in immigration standoff

0
National guard troops at an Illinois training center

President Donald Trump has called for the jailing of Illinois officials, accusing them of not doing enough to ensure the safety of federal immigration officers who are conducting raids in Chicago.

The president wrote in a social media post that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, both Democrats, “should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers!”

Trump has previously called the city a “war zone” amid protests against immigration enforcement. Pritzker has called the president’s actions “authoritarian”.

The Republican president spoke as hundreds of National Guard troops arrived in the city as part of his immigration crackdown.

The standoff raises the temperature in an already heated rhetorical battle between Trump and local officials in Democratic-led cities and states.

The Chicago mayor quickly fired back at Trump, saying “this is not the first time Trump has tried to have a Black man unjustly arrested. I’m not going anywhere.”

Pritzker vowed: “I will not back down.

“Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power. What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?”

The arrival of National Guard troops in Chicago follows similar deployments to Los Angeles and Washington DC to stem what the president has described as “out of control” crime.

Crunch moment in French crisis as outgoing PM tries to avert new election

0
Lecornu became the third French PM to leave his job

Hours before his deadline for resolving France’s political crisis, outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said political parties have shown a “willingness” that could stave off the threat of new parliamentary elections.

Lecornu on Monday became the third French PM to leave his job in less than a year. He has until Wednesday evening to come up with a plan for the “stability of the country” and has held talks with several political parties.

Like his predecessors, Lecornu was unable to push through a budget to bring down the government’s deficit and tackle public debt.

Ahead of a second day of talks, Lecornu said he had detected a “willingness to have a budget for France before 31 December”.

“And this willingness creates movement and convergence, obviously, which makes the prospect of dissolution [of parliament] more remote,” he said in a statement in the courtyard of his Paris residence at the Hôtel Matignon.

The outgoing prime minister then began talks with Socialist leaders. He is due to go on French TV at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) to give details of whether he had found a solution.

His best hope appears to be some kind of political pact to prevent any new government being thrown out in a confidence vote.

Commentators and officials said Lecornu’s TV appearance meant it was unlikely President Emmanuel Macron would himself give an address.

Lecornu’s shock resignation on Monday left France in renewed political turmoil, 18 months before the end of Macron’s second term in office. Macron’s decision to call snap elections in mid-2024 left France with a hung parliament and a succession of minority governments.

US and regional mediators join talks in push to end Gaza war

0
The talks seek to end the devastating war in Gaza

Top US envoys and regional figures are taking part in the third day of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas in Egypt on President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza.

Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh on Wednesday along with Qatar’s prime minister and Turkey’s intelligence chief for what is expected to be a key day indicating whether progress can be made.

A senior Hamas official told the BBC it had shown “the necessary positivity” in the negotiations and submitted a list of the Palestinian prisoners it wanted Israel to release in exchange for the hostages held in Gaza.

Israeli media cited officials as saying there was “cautious optimism”.

Trump also struck a positive tone, saying: “There’s a real chance that we could do something.”

The first two days of the indirect talks between Israel and Hamas have focused on mechanisms for ending the two-year-long war in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory, and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Gaza.

It is hoped that the presence of heavyweight negotiators will add to the momentum for a deal.

Witkoff and Kushner, who served as Trump’s Middle East adviser during his first term, flew into Sharm el-Sheikh early on Wednesday.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi called their arrival “very encouraging”, saying they came “with a strong will, a strong message, and a strong mandate from President Trump to end the war in this round of negotiations”.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and the director of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation, Ibrahim Kalin, also joined the talks on Wednesday.

And Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reportedly arrived in the afternoon to lead the Israeli delegation.

Representatives from two other Palestinian armed groups, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), were also present.

Health Benefits of Eating Apples

0
Apples

Apples can do a lot for you, thanks to plant chemicals called flavonoids. And they have pectin, a fiber that breaks down in your gut. If you take off the apple’s skin before eating it, you won’t get as much of the fiber or flavonoids.

Phytochemicals

Nutritionists and other scientists get excited about apples because of their phytochemical content. Phytochemicals are substances found in plants that may be good for human health. They go by many different names, such as phytonutrients, polyphenols, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and flavonoids. You shouldn’t peel your apples, as most of the phytochemicals are in the skin.

Fiber

The fiber can slow digestion, so you feel fuller after eating. This can keep you from overeating. Eating fiber-rich foods helps control symptoms and lessens the effects of acid reflux. An apple’s fiber can also help with diarrhea and constipation.

Blood vessel and heart damage protection

Some studies show that plant chemicals and the fiber of an apple peel protect against blood vessel and heart damage. They also can help lower your cholesterol, and they might protect your cells’ DNA from something called oxidative damage, which is one of the things that can lead to cancer.

Antioxidants

Research shows the antioxidants in apples can slow the growth of cancer cells. And they can protect the cells in your pancreas, which can lower your chances of type 2 diabetes.

Other health benefits

Scientists also give apples credit for helping:

  • Your lung strength
  • Your heart
  • With asthma
  • Bone health
  • Weight loss
  • Your brain (easing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related memory loss)
  • Your immune system
  • Your gut health

You don’t need to be concerned about the sugar in apples. Although they have carbs that affect your blood sugar, these carbs are different from other sugars that strip away fiber that’s good for you.

Apple Nutrition

Apples are low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. They don’t offer protein, but apples are a good source of vitamin C and fiber.

One medium apple has about:

  • 25 grams of carbohydrates
  • 19 grams of sugar
  • A variety of strong antioxidants

How much fiber in an apple?

One medium apple with the skin has around 4 grams of fiber, while one without the skin has around 2 grams.

How many calories are in an apple?

You’ll get about 100 calories when you eat a medium apple.

Side Effects of Apple

Although apples do have health benefits, eating too many of them (like anything) can be bad for you. Too much fruit can cause you to gain weight.

There are a few other things to keep in mind:

Pesticides. Apples are one of the fruits that have high pesticide residues because bugs and disease are more likely to affect them. It’s always best to wash fruits like apples before you eat them.

Seeds. You might’ve also heard that eating apple seeds or the core is bad for you. The seeds do have chemicals that turn into cyanide in your body, but you would have to crush and eat many seeds for them to harm you. In fact, an average adult would have to eat at least 150 crushed seeds for a risk of cyanide poisoning. The seeds are actually rich in protein and fiber.

Interactions. Apple juice can interact with the allergy drug fexofenadine (Allegra). The juice makes it hard for your body to absorb the medicine.

How to Buy and Prepare Apples

When you’re buying apples, make sure they feel firm and heavy. The skin shouldn’t have bruises, cuts, or soft spots.

Apples are healthiest when eaten fresh and unpeeled. Cut apples turn brown quickly because of a process called enzymatic browning. The darkened fruit isn’t harmful, but it may look less appealing. To prevent enzymatic browning, dip the apples in a lemon juice solution or use a commercial product.

Make sure to store apples in your refrigerator to keep them fresh longer. They can be stored at room temperature, but they’ll ripen much faster.
