Ex-French president Sarkozy given five-year sentence after Libya case

0
Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a case related to millions of euros of illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The Paris criminal court acquitted him of all other charges, including passive corruption and illegal campaign financing.

The ruling means he will spend time in jail even if he launches an appeal, which Sarkozy says he intends to do.

Speaking after Thursday’s hearing, the 70-year-old, who was president from 2007-12, said the verdict was “extremely serious for rule of law”.

Sarkozy, who claims the case is politically motivated, was accused of using the funds from Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election campaign.

In exchange, the prosecution alleged Sarkozy promised to help Gaddafi combat his reputation as a pariah with Western countries.

Judge Nathalie Gavarino said Sarkozy had allowed close aides to contact Libyan officials with a view to obtaining financial support for his campaign.

But the court ruled that there was not enough evidence to find Sarkozy was the beneficiary of the illegal campaign financing.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of €100,000 ($117,000, £87,000).

There was a shocked intake of breath in court when the judge read out her sentence.

Sarkozy could be sent to prison in Paris in the coming days – a first for a former French president and a humiliating blow for a man who has always protested his innocence in this trial and the other legal cases against him.

Donald Trump says London wants ‘to go to sharia law’

0
President Donald Trump

US president Donald Trump has claimed in an address to the United Nations that London wants to “go to sharia law”.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump again attacked London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and also criticised UN assistance for asylum seekers.

“I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed,” he said. “Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that.”

A spokesperson for Sir Sadiq said of Trump’s comments: “We are not going to dignify his appalling and bigoted comments with a response.”

They continued: “London is the greatest city in the world, safer than major US cities, and we’re delighted to welcome the record number of US citizens moving here.”

Trump has repeatedly attacked Sir Sadiq since 2015, when the Labour politician condemned the then presidential hopeful’s suggestion that Muslims should be banned from travelling to the US.

During last week’s state visit, the president said Sir Sadiq was “among the worst mayors in the world” and claimed he had asked that the mayor not attend events during the visit, including a state banquet hosted by the King at Windsor Castle.

Sir Sadiq said he was “indifferent to President Trump” and had “more important things to worry about”.

Sir Sadiq did not attend the state banquet and the BBC understands he did not seek or expect an invitation. A source close to the mayor said Trump’s politics sowed “fear and division”.

In 2019, Trump called the mayor “a stone-cold loser” and Sir Sadiq accused him of stirring up far-right politics.

How to Get Rid of Cold Sores

0

If you’ve ever had a cold sore, you know the signs. It starts with tingling, then the edge of your lip or corner of your mouth begins to burn. This is followed by the outbreak: A red sore appears, and a few days later, it breaks open and crusts over. Within one to two weeks, your sore usually goes away.

Cold sores, or fever blisters, are caused by a virus and have no cure. When you feel one budding, you want to get rid of it, fast.

But you probably don’t need a doctor. There are things that you can do at home to soothe your discomfort as they heal – anything from using ice or aloe vera to using pain medication from your medicine cabinet.

How to Treat Cold Sores

There are many things that you can do at home to soothe the sting of a cold sore, such as:

Ice. You can numb the pain if you apply a cold compress to the sore. But don’t put ice directly on your skin – that could damage it.

Pain relievers. When a cold sore really stings, you may get some relief from an over-the-counter painkiller like acetaminophen.

Over-the-counter creams.You can buy products at the drugstore to help ease your cold sore discomfort or help keep the skin soft while it heals.

Prescription drugs. Because cold sores are caused by a virus, your doctor may suggest an antiviral medication to help you heal more quickly. The antivirals used to treat cold sores include acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), penciclovir (Denavir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex).

Sunscreen. Getting a sunburn may trigger a cold sore. Using sunscreen when you’re out in the sun may prevent it.

Aloe vera gel. The same gel used for sunburn may help a cold sore to heal. Some studies show that the gel may help fight viruses, including herpes simplex.

Lysine. This supplement may help treat your cold sores. It comes in a cream or in capsule form.

Propolis. This is a resin-like material made by bees from the buds of poplar and cone-bearing trees. It may be used like an ointment to treat cold sores.

Lemon balm. Some research has shown that lemon balm extract can help cold sores get better, too.

Tea tree oil. Some research has shown that this strong-smelling oil helps a cold sore heal more quickly.

Peppermint oil. Research has found that peppermint oil may help fight the virus causing cold sores.

Manuka honey. Medical-grade manuka honey may work as a topical medication to treat your cold sores, according to some studies.

Vitamin C and vitamin E. Both of these vitamins have been shown to fight cold sores. Studies have shown that vitamin C can inactivate the herpes simplex virus, the virus that causes cold sores. Other research has shown that vitamin E can help heal cold sores.

Stress reduction. Taking steps to lower your stress levels may help ward off cold sores. Try meditation or deep breathing exercises.

What Not to Do With Cold Sores

Certain habits or behaviors could trigger a cold sore outbreak or make new cold sores appear elsewhere on your body.

Prevent the Spread

How to stop cold sores from spreading.

Avoid triggers

If a hot, sunny day at the beach or a lot of stress makes you break out in cold sores, try to avoid those situations when you can. You may be able to stop a cold sore in its tracks, or at least keep it from getting worse.

Don’t touch

If you pick at your cold sore, you may spread the virus to another part of your body. And that can make your outbreak worse. Keep your hands away from your mouth, and wash your hands often, especially when you touch your face.

Don’t pop sores

The virus is most likely to spread after a cold sore appears and before it heals. Popping the sores may spread the virus to other parts of your body.

Don’t give or receive oral sex

When you have a cold sore, you can spread it to other parts of the body, including your genitals.

Causes of Cold Sores

Cold sores are caused by a common virus called herpes simplex. Most people get exposed to the virus when they’re babies or children. Although there’s no cure for it, you can treat it. Once you’ve been exposed, the virus is always in your system, even if it doesn’t often cause cold sores or other symptoms. Knowing what causes cold sores can help you prevent the spread.

Herpes simplex is spread by close contact. If you kiss someone with a cold sore, or touch their face and then your own, you can catch the virus. You can also get herpes simplex by sharing things with someone who has it, such as:

  • Lip balm
  • Forks or other utensils
  • Mugs or plates
  • Razors or towels

You’re most likely to get the virus from someone who has an active cold sore. But it’s also possible to contract it from someone who doesn’t have a sore or blister showing.

Adutwum’s chances of winning presidential primary looks brighter’

0
Dr Yaw Adutwum

Mr Kwasi Annan Frimpong, one of the pioneers and founders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region has described Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, one of the Election 2028 presidential hopefuls of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a “dark horse”.

A “dark horse” is a candidate for office for whom little is known or for whom expectations are low, but who then goes on to unexpectedly win or succeed.

The party’s upcoming presidential primary to elect its presidential candidate for Ghana 2028 presidential election, is slated for January 31, 2026.

Some aspirants who have filed to contest in the primary are: Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Frimpong said the chances of the former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region remained brighter.

Mr Frimpong said: “The eyes of the NPP aren’t set on Dr Adutwum yet; however, he can spring a surprise if you critically follow his political campaign so far.”

Mr Frimpong noted that all the five presidential aspirants contesting the party’s “are perfectly fit for the President of the nation”, with exceptional track records.

He indicated, however, that Dr Adutwum had built a strong grassroot support base in the NPP, nationwide.
“In fact, he continues with his demeanour and clean campaigns; I will not be surprised if Dr Adutwum wins our presidential primary and subsequently leads the NPP to regain political power in the Election 2028,” Mr Frimpong said he stated.
Describing the party’s presidential race as very competitive, Mr Frimpong emphasised that “if you follow his campaign and how it is grass rooting, you can deduce that Dr Adutwum has something different that can lead the NPP to win the next General Election.”
That notwithstanding, he advised the presidential aspirants and their supporters to put the interest of the party first and remain decorous in their campaigns in order not to create an “unrepairable factionalism” in the NPP after the primary.
Mr Frimpong also urged the aspirants to prepare to accept the outcome and support any of them who might win the primary in the supreme interest of the NPP.

God Is Sovereign And Faithful

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.  They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills.  Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceit of their minds no limits.

They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression.  Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.  Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. They say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”  This is what the wicked are like- always free of care, they increase in wealth.  Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been plagued, I have been punished every morning.

If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed your children.  When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.  Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.  How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!  As a dream when one awakes; so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.  Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.  But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. – PSALM 73.

This psalm deals with a disturbing problem. Although God is sovereign (He has absolute power and authority to do as He desires) and His justice is complete, still wicked people often prosper while those who serve God seem to suffer more. The psalmist, who serves God faithfully, has become discouraged as he compares his troubles with the ease and happiness of many who reject and disobey God. However, his confidence in God is renewed when God reveals the tragic destiny of the wicked and the true reward of those who remain faithful to God.

DESTINY OF THE WICKED.

  1. This revelation helps the psalmist view his problems in a more balanced way. He realizes that he and other godly people will enjoy the best for eternity, but they also have the greatest benefit in the present life as well. They have access to God’s power and presence. In the end, everything will be made right. All God’s people will be victorious with him, while the wicked will perish.
  2. Considering how short life is, if we evaluate things simply from our limited, earthly, human perspective, we will almost certainly become discouraged. We must depend on God’s Word and His Holy Spirit in order to complete our life’s journey with faith and confidence in God’s goodness and justice.

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US

No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Joshua 1:5

God’s foundational promise to Joshua – “I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” – is the same promise God gives to all of His followers as they go through the struggles of life walking by faith. God’s constant presence is now a reality through His Son and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8.

The New Testament applies this promise to all who sincerely receive Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Believers are assured that if they love God above all else and depend on Him rather than on material security, the Lord will never desert nor forsake them. He will be their helper.

Because of this promise, we must “be strong and courageous”, persevering in trials, resisting temptations, trusting in the Lord and fully obeying Him.

THROUGH THE LOVE OF GOD OUR SAVIOUR – MHB 525

1 Through the love of God our Saviour,

All will be well;

Free and changeless is His favour,

All, all is well:

Precious is the blood that healed us;

Perfect is the grace that sealed us;

Strong the hand stretched forth to shield us;

All must be well.

2 Though we pass through tribulation,

All will be well;

Christ hath purchased full salvation,

All, all is well:

Happy still in God confiding;

Fruitful, if in Christ abiding;

Holy, through the Spirit’s guiding;

All must be well.

3 We expect a bright tomorrow;

All will be well;

Faith can sing through days of sorrow,

All, all is well:

On our Father’s love relying,

Jesus every need supplying,

Then in living or in dying,

All must be well.

Feature: ASANTEHEMAA’S DƆTE YIE

0
Africanus Owusu Ansah (Hot Issues)

“The passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III, my beloved senior sister, the Asantehemaa and Mother of the Golden Stool, has left an emptiness in my heart and in the soul of Asanteman. It is not easy for me, as King, to put into words the depth of my grief, for the Nation has lost a mother, and I have lost not only a sister, but one of my greatest pillars of strength”. – Tribute by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

AKWAABA:  Come to Asante (Ɛsa nti: because of wars) and you will hear many folktales, one of which is that when the dead go to Asamando they return to share food and drinks with the living, Aberewa (old lady/woman) is imbued with so much wisdom that a panel settling a case will have to “consult” aberewa for guidance and judgment.

We Asantes have our enviable culture, and we believe in certain traditional norms, believe in traditional systems, and we are ready to die for our Kings and Queens – because they are an embodiment of the Asante nation. Thus, it does not bother us to carry our Kings and qmQueens in palanquins.

You may have read Kwadwo Nyantakyi’s historical book: The Kingdom of Asante, and he writes; “Legends have it that some of the clans of Asante Nation originated from a hole at Asantemanso near Essumeja …  Some … state that their ancestors descended from the skies … when the Asante clan chiefs united under Nana Osei Tutu, they were forbidden to relate their past history since that would sow the seed of disunity …”

The late Nana Yaa Konadu Yiadom III (Asantehemaa) born as Nana Ama Konadu in 1927 and enstooled in February 2017 as the 14th Asantehemaa (on the death of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II) went to the village (kɔɔ akuraa) on Thursday August 7, 2025.

The one-week observance was held on August 21, 2025 and four days were set aside for the dɔte-yie (the “dust to dust, ashes to ashes” rites echoed in Genesis 3:19; “… for dust you are and to dust you shall return”).

Manhyia was hectic throughout the four days earmarked for the ceremonies. The turn of the Judiciary and the Ghana Bar Association came on, on Wednesday September 17, 2025 – the time when the “main” Bar was attending the 2025 annual conference at Wa. The book of condolence was signed by Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, the inheritor of the embattled Georgina Torkonoo and the affable, soon-to-be Chief Justice, for the Judiciary and Lawyer Anaglate for the Bar.

The main event was held on Thursday, 18th September, 2025.  Before the day, an order had been issued for the closure of shops, banks, offices and schools.  It was virtually a holiday.  The Central Business District; (Kejetia, Adum, Ashanti New Town) as well as Asafo, Tech (Ayigya) and even all the small towns and villages like Pakyi, Pankronu, went to sleep early (before 6 pm) – even the mad people had apparently got a hint of the “curfew” and could not be seen anywhere.  Baffour Kantankrakyi, Asantehene’s senior linguist clarified the order, so as to dispel fears of violating the 1992 Constitution saying “Asanteman will go silent”.

A man who allegedly insulted Asanteman, saying on social media “only fools will obey the order and sleep” – the video went viral; we saw Mustapha beaten to pulp by ghosts and in another clip he was seen apologising profusely for his mis-statements.

Transport operators, pharmaceutical shops, restaurants were exempted from the order, but there were no passengers, nor sick people, nor famished itinerants.  Like Millicent Afum, majority of Asantes hailed the order, stressing, “As a society, despite the advent of “modernity” we must jealously guard our culture” OR the woman who noted: “Da koro pɛ, w’annidi a wonnwu” OR Rastafarian Blakk Rasta’s condemnation of the ban, “beautifully” chastised by Hon. Daniel Dugan in “The Chronicle” of  September 23, 2025: “…

Get educated that it is part of tradition and culture to temporarily ban economic activities in Kumasi during the funeral and burial of the Asantehene or Queen, so as to ensure unified mourning, respect for the deceased and security for the large crowds of mourners and dignitaries … this one-off event … Nana Aba Anamoah looked at the positive sides and beauty of the funeral with culture at its best, emphasising on how it united Ghana with the presence of other ethnic traditional leaders …  Asanteman honours and respects the tradition and culture God gave to Asantes.  Your diverse opinions would mean nothing.  God specially created Asantes as they are”.

You could not have missed the horse dancing to the fine adowa; nor the fetish priest who sat on his stool and did the long distance to the funeral ground… OR the unmanned hut that moved on its own.

All the dignitaries who mattered were there in their numbers; His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, the President of the Republic, former Presidents Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo; Hon. Addo Kufuor, Hon. S. K. Boafo, Asiedu Nketia, Julius Debrah, Hon. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister … Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Representatives of foreign countries, Ambassadors, High Commissioners (U.K., France, USA, Germany, China, UN, Nigeria, Cote d’lvoire, Togo, Russell Dlamani and Thuisile Dladla – Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini) – Eze,  The Ibo King (in Ghana) although appearing gorgeous with a large entourage might have expected to “shake hands” with Otumfuo, just as Yagbonwura did, but the security men thought “bowing” was adequate.

Kwaku Bonsam could have suffered a similar fate, despite the “spraying” of cedis.  The presence of the people from Anlo signified the bond of friendship between Anlo and Asante in the 18th century that culminated in the ceding of land in Anlo for Asantes and land in Kumasi for the Anlo people (Anloga) under Kwaku Dua I and Awadada Axorlu I (Anlo kotsiklolo, naketi deka nor dzomebinu – Anlo the united state, one firewood is able to prepare a meal …)  Business-men including Kwame Despite, the East Legon Executive and Nick Danso of ICUMS were there.

The body of the Asantehemaa lay in state in a well-decorated closet. The mixed choir group: Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, Saviour Church were where the body lay,

pouring out scintillating songs. The funeral service was held in the open, and our brother, James Osman Adjei could be seen moving up and down among them our good friend, Prof. Yinka Sarfo.

Nana awu o, yɛmmua nna, so off to Brother man’s spot at Patasi. The Director of the pub with open arms made available to us various drinks (beer, Guinness) and some food – all gratis.

In the funeral brochure the soothing and powerful words of ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor was poignant: “A quintessential royal of Asante, Nana Yaa Konadu Yiadom III was ordained by destiny to inherit the illustrious matriarchal throne of her revered ancestors, custodians of the stool since the inception of the Asante nation, some 350 years ago”.

Need we say anything more? Except to remind readers that it was a solemn occasion and our mother, Nana Konadu, is lying peacefully at Bremang.

Juventus, Atalanta go toe-to-toe at Allianz Stadium

0
Francisco Conceicao, Juventus

Both unbeaten in Serie A, Juventus and Atalanta BC will vie for victory on Saturday evening, as they go toe-to-toe at Allianz Stadium.

Playing in Turin for the second straight week, the visitors trail Juve by two points but can now overtake them with a win.

While there have been bumps in the road for Juventus this term, Igor Tudor‘s start to life as permanent head coach has gone relatively well so far, with 10 points on the board in Serie A.

Still undefeated in all competitions, Juve were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Hellas Verona last weekend, in a rather more prosaic contest than their previous two matches.

Following a spectacular 4-3 win over Inter Milan in the Derby d’Italia and an incredible eight-goal Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund, Tudor’s side were ultimately left frustrated.

Though Juve have won 10 of their last 11 Serie A matches as hosts, their sole setback during that time was a 4-0 humbling by Atalanta in March, which spelled the end for former coach Thiago Motta.

Indeed, Atalanta boast an unusually impressive record at Allianz Stadium, where they are unbeaten in seven league visits.

Home or away, they have lost just one of their last 11 Serie A clashes with Juventus, so fear should not be a factor this weekend.

Both teams have averaged at least two goals per game so far – and neither has quite managed to solve their issues at the back – so entertainment should be on the cards.

Atletico and Real faceoff in Madrid derby

0
Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid

Real Madrid will be aiming to make it seven straight wins at the start of the 2025-26 La Liga campaign when they head to bitter rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday for the latest instalment of the Madrid derby.

Los Blancos are top of the La Liga table, picking up 18 points from their first six matches, while Atletico are in ninth, only managing to collect nine points from their opening six games of the season.

Atletico have a record of two wins, three draws and one defeat from their first six matches, with nine points leaving them in eighth spot in the table, nine points behind the leaders Real Madrid.

The Madrid derby could provide the springboard that they need. Atletico are so often strong defensively, but that has not been the case this season, already conceding seven times in their six games, and that will be a concern ahead of facing the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

Each of the last three Madrid derbies in La Liga have finished 1-1, while Atletico are actually unbeaten in their last five top-flight encounters with Real Madrid dating back to September 2022.

It would have been easy to pick another draw here considering what has occurred in their recent meetings, but Real Madrid are grinding out win after win at the moment, and we are backing Alonso’s side to navigate their way to all three points in the Madrid derby.

Chelsea welcome Brighton to Stamford Bridge

0
Joao Pedro, Chelsea

After both taking down lower-league opposition in the EFL Cup, Chelsea and Brighton now resume Premier League duties at the former’s Stamford Bridge home on Saturday.

While the Blues had to survive a scare to conquer Lincoln City 2-1 in midweek, the sensational Seagulls hit Barnsley for six without reply.

Last weekend’s chaotic 2-1 loss to Manchester United spelled the end of Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season; a particularly damning statistic, the 10-man Blues collected more cards (six) than they had shots (five) at a rain-soaked Old Trafford last Sunday.

However, the Club World Cup winners have been rebuilding the Stamford Bridge walls over the past couple of seasons and enter the weekend unbeaten in 12 straight Premier League games at home, while also recording seven clean sheets from their past nine.

Midweek fatigue should not come into play for either side, as Maresca and Hurzeler are sure to make a plethora of changes from their EFL Cup XIs, and we can therefore not look past a first-choice Blues lineup.

Chelsea have plenty to shout about on home soil, where they have also kept three clean sheets in their last three.

Manchester United travel away to face Brentford

0
Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United

Searching for their third Premier League win in four matches, Manchester United travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford today at lunchtime.

Both teams are currently occupying a place in the bottom half of the table, with the Red Devils in 11th position with seven point and the Bees three points further back in 17th spot after five games.

Challenging fixtures against Man City, Liverpool and Newcastle are on the horizon for Brentford, but they will welcome Saturday’s encounter with Man United as they have won two of their last three Premier League home games against the Red Devils (D1), while they have only lost one of their last six league matches at the Gtech (W3 D2).

Under-fire Man United head coach Ruben Amorim was able to breathe a sigh of relief last weekend after his Red Devils outfit capitalised on Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute dismissal to secure a priceless 2-1 win over Chelsea in torrential rain at Old Trafford.

Both Brentford and Man United have been far from watertight at the back so far this season, but they have posed a regular threat in the final third, so an entertaining contest with goals at both ends could be on the cards this weekend.

Taking into account the Bees’ strong home record, the Red Devils’ seven-game winless streak on the road and the fact that there is little to separate these two teams at present, we feel that the spoils will be shared in West London.
