Presidency hiring mercenaries to impersonate me –Atiku raises alarm

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm, alleging that the Presidency has “resorted to hiring faceless mercenaries to fabricate fake stories” about him.

Atiku, in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe distanced himself from one Kola Johnson, whom he said have been issuing statements in his name.

The statement clarified that the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, “has never engaged Kola Johnson as a media consultant, aide, or associate”.

The statement reads, “We have observed with concern a certain self-styled “media consultant,” one Kola Johnson, issuing press releases in the name of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“Our findings point directly to the Presidency, which in its desperation to smear opposition leaders, has resorted to hiring faceless mercenaries to fabricate fake stories and circulate unauthorized statements on Atiku.

“Particularly offensive is the false claim attributed to this individual that an Atiku administration would be dominated by a single ethnic group. This disinformation is part of a calculated propaganda project designed to ridicule Atiku in the media.

“Let it be clear: Atiku Abubakar has never engaged one Kola Johnson as a media consultant, aide, or associate.

“Any statement issued in that name is fake and should be disregarded. We urge media houses that have published such falsehoods to immediately retract them.

“We caution Nigerians, especially the media, to remain vigilant against the propaganda schemes of the Tinubu administration, which now include circulating fabricated statements through compromised journalists.

“For the record, authentic information from Atiku Abubakar is only released through the Atiku Media Office, signed by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, or the Special Assistant on Public Communications.

“Editors and media gatekeepers are strongly advised to verify with the AMO before publication.”

Nationwide blackout looms as Nigerian electricity workers begin strike

Nationwide blackout looms

Nigerians may experience blackout in the coming days as the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, commenced a strike action on Wednesday over non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualisation of workers and other demands.

The industrial action was disclosed in a notice signed by the Acting General Secretary of NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, on Wednesday.

The union said its decision to commence the strike action follows the expiration of the ultimatum issued to the Management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria,TCN, over its demands.

NUEE said it cannot fold its hands while the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, goes down the drain, hence the justification for the strike action.

“It is unfortunate that the TCN Management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and a lack of regard for the hard-working staff of TCN. This, they have displayed without any defined road map(s) to addressing them.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated and the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) going down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services.

“Members are hereby directed to withdraw services until such time that the management is ready to discharge its obligations towards the workforce,” the notice reads.

The union had downed tools in June 2024, leading to a disruption in electricity supply.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, is yet to respond to an enquiry from DAILY POST at the time of filing this report.

World Bank advises gov’t to initiate reforms to restore macroeconomic stability

Robert Taliercio, World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia

The World Bank has called on Ghana to urgently implement bold and comprehensive reforms to restore macroeconomic stability, boost productivity, improve infrastructure and strengthen human capital, stressing that these actions are key to achieving a “generational transformation.”

At the launch of the Bank’s 2025 Policy Notes report titled “Transforming Ghana in a Generation,” Robert Taliercio, World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia, outlined priority areas that could help Ghana sustain economic growth above 6.5 percent, triple per capita income by 2050 and avoid the middle-income trap.

He reminded stakeholders of Ghana’s past achievements, noting that between 2009 and 2019, the country’s economy grew at an average of 6.8 percent and poverty was halved between 1991 and 2016. “This progress outpaced much of Sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

“But in the past decade, Ghana’s economic and social prospects declined due to rising macroeconomic challenges, culminating in a severe crisis in 2022 that undermined poverty reduction and job creation efforts,” he added.

According to the report, Ghana’s income per capita has stagnated at around $2,200 over the last decade, while job creation remains weak. Between 2012 and 2023 only 250,000 net jobs were created, most of them in low-productivity sectors.

Mr. Taliercio warned that Ghana’s reform momentum must not be delayed further, particularly in the energy and cocoa sectors. He revealed that energy sector inefficiencies cost the government about US$1.4 billion in transfers in 2024 and are projected to rise to US$2 billion by 2026.

“Every month of delay is extremely costly for the nation,” he cautioned, while acknowledging a 40 percent increase in revenues through the cash waterfall mechanism this year as a positive step.

He also described reforms in the cocoa sector as urgent, noting that the current operational framework of COCOBOD creates inefficiencies that worsen debt and fiscal risks.

On the social side, he stressed the need to strengthen the targeting of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program and improve efficiency of health spending, particularly the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The Policy Notes lay out four foundations for Ghana’s transformation:

  1. Restoring macro-financial stability through improved revenue mobilisation, expenditure management and fiscal discipline. Ghana’s tax revenue collection remains at 13 percent of GDP, far below its estimated capacity of 21 percent and below the Sub-Saharan African average.

  1. Raising productivity and competitiveness by investing in human capital, improving the business environment, and reducing systemic barriers. For instance, registering a business in Ghana takes nearly twice as long as in Morocco, while court cases take an average of 900 days to resolve compared to 225 days in Côte d’Ivoire.
  2. Promoting sustainable natural resource management and resilience, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure, to protect the environment and broaden the economic base.
  3. Strengthening governance and public institutions to ensure reforms are credible and build trust with citizens.

“The potential payoff is significant. With ambitious reforms, Ghana could more than triple per capita income by 2050, moving decisively toward upper-middle-income status,” Mr. Taliercio stated.

He emphasised that transformation was a collective endeavour requiring government commitment, private sector innovation, civil society engagement, and international partnership. Programs such as the government’s 24-Hour Economy and Big Push could serve as vehicles for reform if implemented effectively.

“The choices Ghana makes now can unlock a generation of inclusive, resilient growth, and deliver on the promise of sufficient quality jobs for its citizens. The World Bank stands ready to support Ghana’s leadership and the efforts of all stakeholders to make that promise real,” he concluded.

Cardi B says Offset eyeing her property

Cardi B and Offset

When Cardi B confirmed that she was indeed pregnant for her boyfriend, Steffon Diggs, it generated uproar, as she’s still married to rapper Offset.

But in true Cardi B fashion, she’s unbothered about the situation and brazenly explains why she refuses to be held hostage in a “marriage.”

The rapper hopped on Twitter Spaces to clear the air after fans kept pointing out that she’s still married to Offset, despite moving on with Stefon Diggs.

“Yes, I’m having a baby with somebody else, yes, that’s life…It happens, and let me tell you something. I did things the correct way the first time; I fell in love, I got two rings on my finger, and I lasted seven years that I didn’t need to last with someone in.”

Cardi made it clear that the marriage has long been over in every sense but legally, accusing Offset of dragging out the divorce process for financial gains.

“So stop saying, ‘But you’re still married’, no, I’m legally separated. The only reason I’m still married is that he wants me to pay his taxes even though I pay for mine. He wants me to also give him one of my properties, and I’m fighting against that.”

Cardi B, who filed for divorce in 2024, made it abundantly clear that she was not willing to put her life on hold over the lingering proceedings.

Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has revealed that she has been celibate for three whole years.

She made the revelation while appearing as a guest on the popular American radio show The Breakfast Club, where she talked about her musical journey and addressed some controversies surrounding her personal and romantic life. While there, she confessed that she had not been intimate with anyone in three years.

“I’ve gone like 3 years without sex,” she said. “It’s not something I really like or I’m crazy about. I have to be with someone to think about sex with them.”

Tiwa Savage’s confession comes days after she revealed the traumatising experience she had to endure after her sex tapes leaked in 2022. It might also be worth noting that her revelation of a 3-year-long celibacy coincides with the sex tape episode.

During the interview, the singer also light-heartedly revealed that she doesn’t even use sex toys. “I don’t even use sex toys, maybe I need to, maybe that’s what I need for Christmas,” she said, revealing the absolute state of her celibacy.

She also admitted that her celibacy is directly tied to her lack of romantic relationships.

Sarkodie reacts to NSA boss’ caution of use of stadium ahead of Rapperholic concert

Sarkodie at Baba Yara Sports Stadium

Rap icon Michael Owusu Addo, professionally known as Sarkodie, has given his word that the pitch at Baba Yara Sports Stadium will remain untouched during his much-anticipated Rapperholic Concert scheduled for 27th September 2025 in Kumasi.

The award-winning rapper clarified on social media that the stage set-up and production would not extend onto the grass pitch. Acknowledging the guidelines laid down by the National Sports Authority (NSA), Sarkodie wrote: “The rules were set from day one, and we are not ready to break it.”

This assurance follows a warning from NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who stressed that the government would not tolerate any damage to the pitch, which is being carefully maintained for upcoming national football matches. Speaking on Asempa FM, he explained that Sarkodie had been authorised to use the stadium as a venue, but “not the pitch itself”. He further noted that any harm caused to the turf would attract fines.

In a video posted online, Sarkodie offered fans a glimpse of his production layout. The preview showed that the performance would utilise the stands and tartan tracks, leaving the pitch itself untouched. This was his latest attempt to reassure both authorities and supporters that the football field would be fully protected.

South Korea legalises tattooing by non-medical professionals

South Korea legalises tattooing

South Korea has legalised tattoo artistry by non-medical professionals for the first time in more than 30 years, following a campaign by members of the profession to work without fear of prosecution or harassment.

Though tattoos are commonplace in the east Asian nation, offering them has been limited to medical professionals following a 1992 Supreme Court ruling.

But, after the passing of the Tattooist Act by the General Assembly on Thursday, non-medical professionals – who compose most of the industry – will be able to obtain a licence.

Lim Bo-ran, president of the Korea Tattoo Federation, cried at the law’s passing, saying: “I can’t speak because it feels like a dream. I am truly grateful.”

Between 1992 and now, anyone offering tattoos without medical credentials faced up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million Korean won ($35,000; £28,000).

There are no official statistics on how many tattooists have been prosecuted, but South Korea’s Tattoo Union says it gives legal support to at least 50 each year, and believes there are many more that result in fines.

As of 2021, there were an estimated 350,000 tattoo artists in the country, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare – most of whom specialised in semi-permanent make-up for lips, eyebrows or hairlines.

But relatively few of these have medical qualifications. Instead, most come from art or beauty backgrounds like elsewhere in the world.

By technically engaging in an illegal practise, tattoo artists in South Korea have been subjected to threats or reported by disgruntled clients.

Over 1,000 children fall ill from free school feeding in Indonesia

Children fall ill from free school lunches

More than 1,000 children have fallen ill from free school lunches in Indonesia this week, according to authorities – the latest in a string of mass food poisoning events linked to President Prabowo Subianto’s multi-billion-dollar nutritious meals programme.

Yuyun Sarihotima, head of West Java’s Cipongkor Community Health Center, told BBC Indonesia that the total number of poisoning victims recorded between Monday and Wednesday had reached 1,258.

It follows the poisoning of 800 students last week in West Java and Central Sulawesi provinces.

President Prabowo has made the nutritious meals programme – which aims to offer free lunches to 80 million school children – a signature of his leadership.

But a spate of mass food poisoning incidents has led non-governmental organisations to call for authorities to suspend the programme due to health concerns.

Muhaimin Iskandar, Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, said on Wednesday that “there are no plans to stop it”.

Victims of the recent outbreaks complained of stomach aches, dizziness, and nausea – as well as shortness of breath, which is a non-typical symptom of food poisoning.

In previous cases of food poisoning stemming from the free lunch programme negligent food preparation has been cited as a suspected cause.

This week’s victims ate meals that included soy sauce chicken, fried tofu, vegetables and fruit – but past poisoning incidents have been linked to expired sauce and, in one case, the serving of fried shark.

The head of Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency (BGN) Dadan Hindayana said on Wednesday that the mass food poisoning in Cipongkor last week was the result of a technical error by the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG).

Ex-French president Sarkozy given five-year sentence after Libya case

0
Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a case related to millions of euros of illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The Paris criminal court acquitted him of all other charges, including passive corruption and illegal campaign financing.

The ruling means he will spend time in jail even if he launches an appeal, which Sarkozy says he intends to do.

Speaking after Thursday’s hearing, the 70-year-old, who was president from 2007-12, said the verdict was “extremely serious for rule of law”.

Sarkozy, who claims the case is politically motivated, was accused of using the funds from Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election campaign.

In exchange, the prosecution alleged Sarkozy promised to help Gaddafi combat his reputation as a pariah with Western countries.

Judge Nathalie Gavarino said Sarkozy had allowed close aides to contact Libyan officials with a view to obtaining financial support for his campaign.

But the court ruled that there was not enough evidence to find Sarkozy was the beneficiary of the illegal campaign financing.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of €100,000 ($117,000, £87,000).

There was a shocked intake of breath in court when the judge read out her sentence.

Sarkozy could be sent to prison in Paris in the coming days – a first for a former French president and a humiliating blow for a man who has always protested his innocence in this trial and the other legal cases against him.
