Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah presenting the ultimate prize to Team Asanko Gold Ghana
Asanko Gold Mines Limited has emerged winners of the 2025 Annual National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines. This year’s competition was hosted at Manso Nkran by Asanko Gold Mines under the theme: “Every Moment is an Ambush, Think Safety All the Time.”
The competition afforded Staff of large-scale mining firms and their community teams the opportunity to showcase their preparedness in responding to emergencies both within mining sites and in host communities.

Golden Star Wassa, Asanko Gold Mine, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi, and the Ghana Manganese Company Limited participated in the competition with both staff and community teams.
In the community teams category, Asanko Gold Mines emerged winners with 98%, beating Abosso Goldfields Damang (89%), AngloGold Obuasi Mine (85.5%) and the Ghana Manganese Company (27%).
In the staff category, however, Golden Star Wassa scored 59%, Asanko Gold Mine 58.5%, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi 52%, and AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem 50%. The oral segment of the competition is expected to be held in Accra next week on the National Television (GTV).
Mr. Christopher Opoku Darko, Director of Analysis, Research and Finance on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Mines, said the annual competition is a demonstration of life-saving first aid techniques that could make the difference between life and death in real-world emergencies.
He noted that such engagements not only align communities with corporate safety goals, but also provide practical knowledge applicable at home and at work.

He stated, “A mine is not truly safe unless the community around it is also safe. That is why we continue to engage community teams and especially empower women to actively participate in safety competitions.”
The Managing Director for Asanko Gold Mine Limited, Dr. Charles Amoah, emphasised that safety was a mindset and a way of life that must be prioritised at all times and not a one-day event.
He pledged Asanko Gold Mine’s commitment to improving its safety standards not only within the mine environment, but also in the host communities to ensure everyone’s safety at all times.
“At Asanko, safety defines who we are. It shapes our culture, drives our discipline, and reflects our commitment to excellence.
“Hosting this year’s competition is, therefore, not just an honour but a clear demonstration of our belief that safety is a shared duty across the entire mining industry,” he noted.
The MD commended the Ghana Chamber of Mines for granting Asanko Gold Mines the privilege to host this year’s National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition.
The Paramount Chief of the Manso-Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah lauded the initiative by the Ghana Chamber of Mines and commended Asanko Gold Mine for hosting the event in his area to create awareness on safety. He noted the competition would help move the mining industry one step closer to zero hazards.
Some Divisional Chiefs of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council (ENTC) have appealed to the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to urgently intervene to avert a possible chieftaincy clash in the area.

According to the chiefs, tension is mounting, following the alleged irregular installation (enstoolment) of one Egya Ackah, who is parading himself as the Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, with the stool name Awulae Blay.
They warned that unless security agencies step in immediately to stop him from holding himself as Omanhene, there could be violent confrontation in the community.
Addressing a press briefing in Takoradi, Nana Kwamena Bentum II, Divisional Chief of Salma, said the potential for conflict has heightened because the said ‘Imposter’, also known in private life as Berenger Flaton, has announced plans to celebrate the Kundum Festival on November 2, 2025.
He described the development as a threat to peace, stressing that the ENTC already has a gazetted and legitimate Paramount Chief, Awulae Amihere Kpanyile.
According to Nana Bentum, a small group of less than five chiefs, together with the Paramount Queenmother and a few members of the Ndweafo Royal Family, conspired to enstool the nephew of Awulae Kpanyile as Omanhene after claiming to have “traditionally destooled” the sitting Paramount Chief.
“We want to use this occasion to let the world know that Awulae Amihere Kpanyile remains the President of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, and nothing can change that,” he declared.
It has emerged that the Paramount Queenmother, Arvo Nyimah III and one Frank Kwasi, described as head of the Ndweafo Royal Family had earlier filed destoolment charges against Awulae Kpanyile at the Western Regional House of Chiefs (WRHC).
A three-member committee, chaired by Hima Dekyi, Omanhene of Upper Dixcove, with Okuamoah Tetretteh Seyim of Wassa Akropong, as a member, was constituted to hear the petition.
Before that, a mediation team made up of Nana Kobina Nketiah V (Essikado), Awulae Attibrukusu III (Lower Axim) and Kwesi Agyemang IX (Lower Dixcove) attempted to resolve the dispute amicably, but failed, leading to the formal hearing.
The petitioners accused the Omanhene of being unmarried and “incompetent”, among other unsubstantiated claims and prayed the committee to destool him.
However, before the committee could conclude its work, the petitioners, through their lawyers filed a Notice of Discontinuation, withdrawing the case “with liberty to reapply.”
The committee is yet to rule on the application for discontinuance.
Nana Bentum argued that given the pending nature of the case, it was wrong for the Queenmother and her allies to rush into installing another person. He said such actions amounted to “a travesty of justice” and called on REGSEC to act swiftly by arresting the self-styled Omanhene.
“Chieftaincy matters can easily spark conflict, and the police must act now to prevent bloodshed. There are clear procedures in the Chieftaincy Act for enstoolment and destoolment and no one has the right to bypass them under the guise of custom,” he warned.
He commended Awulae Amihere Kpanyile for his calm and restraint despite “false and provocative allegations” against him.
“Throughout this ordeal, Awulae Kpanyile has maintained his dignity. He has not uttered a word or retaliated, that is how a true chief behaves,” Nana Bentum said.
He further appealed to REGSEC and the Regional Police Command to ensure that Awulae Kpanyile returns safely to occupy his stool, saying the discontinuation of the petition means the Omanhene has “no case to answer.”
Exactly a year ago, an attempted assassination on Awulae Amihere Kpanyile at his palace was foiled by the Police.
Consequently, Amihere kpanyile was evacuated from the Atuabo palace to safety. The palace was also declared as a security zone by the police.
But why the same Police looked on for a rival to occupy the palace and same instal himself as Omanhene, and offered police protection raises questions.
Other chiefs, including Nana Simale Kpanyile of Anwia, affirmed their loyalty to Awulae Kpanyile, stating that they had sworn oaths to him and had not received any communication from the House of Chiefs regarding his destoolment.
The Senior Divisional Chief of Aiyinase Stool, Nana Etwe Kpanyile VI, identified as one of the kingmakers of the Atuabo Stool, added that no formal complaint from the royal family had been brought before them, a clear indication that due process had not been followed.

Singer Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau appear to have confirmed their relationship after being photographed holding hands at an event in Paris.
Celebrity news site TMZ published the photographs and video footage of the pair walking hand-in-hand before getting into a car. Trudeau is seen helping the singer into the back seat as photographers called out.
Neither Perry nor Trudeau have publicly commented on their relationship. But speculation has been growing for weeks with multiple pictures of the two together.
Trudeau was seen attending Perry’s concert earlier this year, fuelling rumours of a romance with the pop star.
The appearance in Paris coincided with Perry’s 41st birthday over the weekend and appeared to mark their first public outing as a couple.
Representatives for Perry and Trudeau’s Liberal party did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment.
During a recent tour in London, Perry did appear to allude to her relationship status.
After a fan proposed to her from the audience during a performance, the singer joked: “I wish you’d asked me 48 hours ago.” This was just days after photographs of her and Trudeau were first published online.
Perry was previously in a long-term relationship with actor Orlando Bloom. The pair, who were together for a decade and share a daughter, separated over the summer.
Trudeau, who served as prime minister of Canada from 2015 to 2025, was previously married to Sophie Grégoire for 18 years before the couple split up in the summer of 2023. They share three children.
Direct flights have resumed between India and China after a five-year hiatus, the latest sign of warming relations between the world’s two most populous countries.
IndiGo flight 6E 1703 departed from India’s Kolkata airport at 10pm on Sunday, touching down in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou some three-and-a-half hours later.
Flights between India and mainland China had been suspended since early 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and remained halted after a deadly clash on their disputed Himalayan border escalated tensions.
The two nuclear-armed neighbors have since been working to reduce frictions, reaching an agreement last fall on military disengagement along their disputed border and resuming high-level dialogue for the first time in five years.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, Yu Jing, confirmed the flight, writing in a post on X: “Direct flights between China and India are now a reality.”
State-owned China Eastern Airlines is also set to resume flying between Shanghai and Delhi on November 9, according to Yu, and IndiGo said it is launching a new Delhi–Guangzhou service on November 10.
The Indian government said the return of direct flights will “facilitate people-to-people contact” and help “the gradual normalization of bilateral exchanges.”
Argentina’s President Javier Milei has led his party to a landslide victory in Sunday’s midterm elections, after defining the first two years of his presidency with radical spending cuts and free-market reforms.
His party, La Libertad Avanza, won nearly 41% of the vote, taking 13 of 24 Senate seats and 64 of the 127 lower-house seats that were contested.
His gains will make it easier for Milei to push ahead with his programme to slash state spending and deregulate the economy.
President Donald Trump congratulated Milei on social media, saying: “He’s making us all look good.” Before the vote, Trump made it clear a $40bn US lifeline for Argentina would depend on Milei keeping political momentum.
Milei’s supporters welcomed that, though critics accused Trump of foreign interference in Argentina’s elections.
In a nod to his North American ally, Milei told cheering supporters: “We must consolidate the path of reform we have embarked upon to turn Argentina’s history around once and for all… to make Argentina great again.”
Before these elections his party had just seven Senate seats and 37 seats in the lower house.
That meant his programme of spending cuts and reforms faced various political obstacles.
His vetoes of bills to boost funding for state universities, people with disabilities and children’s healthcare were all overturned by opposition lawmakers.
After Sunday’s result, hundreds of his supporters gathered, cheering, outside a hotel in Buenos Aires where he was watching the result.
Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has declared that President Paul Biya, leader of the country since 1982, has won re-election in a vote accompanied by deadly violence.
The council announced on Monday that the 92-year-old incumbent had secured 53.66 percent of the vote in the October 12 election. Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma received 35.19 percent, it added.
“Hereby proclaimed president-elect: the candidate Biya Paul,” said Clement Atangana, president of the Constitutional Council.
Tchiroma, a former government spokesperson and minister in his late 70s, had claimed victory days before the announcement, citing results he said were collated by his party. Biya dismissed the claim.
On Sunday, at least four people were killed in Cameroon’s largest city, Douala, as security forces clashed with protesters demanding credible results.
After the results were announced, Tchiroma claimed in a post on Facebook that gunfire was being directed at civilians gathered outside his home in the northern city of Garoua. iya has held a tight grip on power since coming into office 43 years ago, doing away with the presidential term limit in 2008 and winning re-election by comfortable margins since.
A new seven-year term could keep the world’s longest-serving ruler in power until he is nearly 100 years old.
Desmond Ngala, head of Civic Watch Cameroon, told Al Jazeera ahead of the announcement that the outcome of the polls was “more or less expected” and that Biya would win.
He added that there are fears that the country could be “paralysed” if unrest continues. Amid such forecasts, the delay in the vote-counting process has raised the suspicions of the opposition. Credit: aljazeera.com
