China Declares Support For Nigeria, Opposes Trump’s Military Threat

China has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty following a threat of military action from the United States.

The Chinese government reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, praising Nigeria for pursuing a development path that reflects the country’s unique national realities.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, made the remarks when she chaired a regular press conference, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria confirmed in a post on X on Tuesday.

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people to a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities,” Mao Ning was quoted to have said.

The Chinese government maintained that issues of religion and human rights should not be used as excuses for external interference in sovereign nations.

In an explosive post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said that he asked the Pentagon to map out a possible plan of attack in Nigeria, one day after warning that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Africa’s most populous country.

In his post, Trump said that if Nigeria does not stem the killings, the United States will attack and “it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians.”

Nigeria’s Constitution Does Not Tolerate Religious Persecution –Tuggar

0
Minster of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, on Tuesday said the Nigerian constitution does not allow religious persecution.

Tuggar’s comment comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention over the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

“It’s impossible for there to be a religious persecution that can be supported in any way, shape or form by the government of Nigeria at any level,” Tuggar said at a press conference in Berlin, Germany.

Trump said on social media over the weekend that he had asked the Pentagon to map out a possible plan of attack because “they’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers”.

But Tuggar said Nigeria has a “constitutional commitment to religious freedom and rule of law”.

Africa’s most populous country, which is roughly evenly split between a mostly Christian south and Muslim-majority north, is home to myriad conflicts, which has killed and displaced both Christians and Muslims, often without distinction.

But claims of Christian “persecution” in Nigeria have found traction online among the US and European right in recent months.

Tuggar warned against any attempts to divide Nigeria along religious lines, as he drew parallels with Sudan.

“What we are trying to make the world understand is that we should not create another Sudan,” he said.

“We’ve seen what has happened with Sudan with agitations for the partitioning of Sudan based on religion, based on tribal sentiments and you can see the crisis even when the partitioning was done according to religion or according to tribe,” Tuggar said.

Court jails man 8 years for stealing containers worth GH¢316,317

The Circuit Court 3 in Accra, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful, has sentenced a 25-year-old man to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 277 cartons of empty containers valued at GH¢316,317.00.

The convict, Richard Yevugah, was found guilty after a full trial and convicted on a charge of stealing contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo led the prosecution.

Case Background

According to the facts presented in court, the complainant, Abdul Mumuni Ahmed, a herbalist residing at Nima, uses moringa snuff as part of his herbal treatment products. He employed Yevugah to assist in producing the snuff.

Mr. Ahmed reportedly purchased 419 cartons of empty bottles valued at GH¢336,327 to be used for packaging the herbal product, out of which he had received 277 cartons. These were stored in two rooms at Nima, with Yevugah given a spare key for safekeeping.

Shortly after the purchase, the complainant fell ill and halted production. On June 11, 2022, at about 7:15 p.m., a witness, Suraji Alhassan Ahmed, informed him that Yevugah had loaded the containers into a vehicle and moved them away.

The complainant rushed to the storage facility and found all the containers missing. He confronted Yevugah at his residence and subsequently accompanied him to the Nima Police Station to lodge a complaint.

During police investigations, Yevugah admitted in his caution statement that he had taken 100 of the boxes and used them to package snuff he produced personally, which he later transported to Nigeria for sale without his employer’s knowledge.

Upon completion of investigations, he was charged and brought before the court. After deliberations, Her Honour Susana Eduful sentenced him to eight years imprisonment with hard labour.

Car dealer granted GH¢600k bail over alleged Toyota Land Cruiser fraud

Bail Granted

The Circuit Court 10 in Accra, presided over by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, has granted a GH¢600,000 bail with four sureties to a car dealer, Yakubu Seidu, who has been accused of defrauding a businessman under the pretext of selling him a 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Two of the sureties are required to justify with immovable property.

Yakubu Seidu pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence, contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Chief Inspector Clemence Takyi is prosecuting the case.

Background

According to the brief facts presented to the court, the complainant, Augustine Amankwah, a businessman residing at Manso-Atwere, sought to purchase a 2015 model Toyota Land Cruiser in 2023. He was introduced to the accused, Yakubu Seidu, a car dealer based at Gbawe-Gonse in Accra.

The prosecution said Seidu claimed he could supply the vehicle and showed pictures to the complainant, leading both parties to agree on a price of GH¢800,000. On November 23, 2023 the complainant reportedly paid GH¢600,000 as part payment.

Yakubu Seidu is said to have handed the vehicle to the complainant’s acquaintance, who delivered it to him in Kumasi.

However, upon inspection, the complainant discovered that the vehicle was a 2009 model, not the 2015 model he had paid for.

The court heard that when confronted, Seidu promised to replace the vehicle and later accepted its return, but failed to supply the agreed model.

Multiple requests for a refund were unsuccessful, prompting the complainant to lodge a report with the Police.

Yakubu Seidu was arrested on August 23, 2024, and during investigations allegedly asked for three months to refund the money.

He has since refunded GH¢120,000, leaving a balance outstanding. He was subsequently charged and arraigned.

The case has been adjourned to December 9, 2025, for continuation.

FABAG calls for Business-Friendly 2026 Budget

0
John Awuni, Chairman of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG)

Ahead of the presentation of the 2026 National Budget Statement and Economic Policy, the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has urged the government to deliver a business-friendly budget that supports local industries and stimulates economic growth.

In a statement copied to The Chronicle, the Association said a budget tailored to promote industrial competitiveness would create a “win-win situation” for both government and businesses.

“We believe that a business-friendly 2026 Budget will not only stimulate investment and production, but also enhance revenue generation and improve the welfare of Ghanaians,” the statement said.

FABAG emphasised that the upcoming budget must clearly outline measures to attract both local and foreign investment into the agro-processing and manufacturing sub-sectors.

Such policies, it said, would ensure value addition, technology transfer, and the creation of decent jobs for Ghanaians.

As a key stakeholder in Ghana’s manufacturing and trade ecosystem, FABAG expressed optimism that the 2026 Budget would reflect policies that promote business recovery, competitiveness and sustainable industrial growth within the food and beverage sector.

“Over the past years, our industry has endured numerous challenges, including high import duties, rising production costs, unstable exchange rates, inflationary pressures and excessive taxation,” the Association noted, warning that these conditions have eroded competitiveness, threatened jobs and reduced Ghana’s attractiveness as a business destination.

Reduction in Nuisance Taxes

FABAG called on the Minister of Finance to review the multiplicity of taxes, levies, and charges imposed on the sector, including the COVID-19 levy, excise duties, the Environmental Excise (Producer Responsibility) tax, container fumigation fees and various regulatory fees.

According to the Association, the cumulative tax burden has increased the cost of doing business, undermined competitiveness and encouraged the smuggling of cheaper products into the country.

FABAG, therefore, urged the government to introduce targeted tax reliefs for local producers, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to stimulate investment, job creation and formalisation.

On the issue of currency depreciation, FABAG expressed concern over the persistent decline in the value of the cedi and its impact on import and production costs.

“FABAG urges the government to adopt pragmatic fiscal and monetary measures that ensure exchange rate stability and control inflation to support price predictability and investor confidence,” the statement read.

The Association also called for incentives and tax reliefs to enhance the capacity, productivity, and export potential of local manufacturers.

These should include access to affordable credit, energy cost reduction, and infrastructure support to help factories operate competitively.

FABAG cautioned against the introduction of new taxes or levies in the upcoming budget, saying the business community is already overburdened.

Instead, the Association urged government to focus on improving revenue collection efficiency and expanding the tax net.

Streamlining Regulatory Functions

FABAG further appealed to the government to harmonize overlapping regulatory roles among agencies such as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

It said this would help reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, duplication, and operational costs.

The Association also encouraged the government to promote environmentally sustainable packaging and production by providing incentives such as tax rebates or grants for companies adopting eco-friendly technologies.

According to FABAG, such measures would better align Ghana’s industry with global sustainability standards and the nation’s climate commitments, rather than imposing additional environmental taxes.

Baba Sadiq highlights role of Creative Arts Agency in data collection

0
Baba Sadiq

Ghanaian politician, entrepreneur and innovator Baba Sadiq has stressed the need for the Creative Arts Agency to take charge of providing credible data for the country’s creative industry.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, Baba Sadiq said data plays a crucial role in shaping policy and guiding corporate decisions within the creative sector.

He made the remarks while discussing the record-breaking turnout at Shatta Wale’s ShattaFest 2025, which drew an estimated crowd of over 400,000 fans to the Black Star Square on 18th October 2025.

When asked whether the Creative Arts Agency should be responsible for gathering and publishing figures from major events such as Shatta Wale’s birthday concerts, Baba Sadiq responded affirmatively.

“It’s inherent in their mandate to lead research and advocacy for industry so I don’t know what they are doing. Once it’s inherent in their mandate, they are supposed to,” he stated.

The Creative Arts Agency was established in 2021 to develop and promote the creative sector, lead policy research, support capacity building, advocate for industry growth, and coordinate data-driven initiatives that enhance the global competitiveness of Ghana’s creative economy.

Kim Kardashian has taken her law exams but says: I could never be a divorce lawyer

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian may be weeks away from finding out if she’s passed her law exams, but she says practising divorce law is not in her future.

The 45-year-old, who plays divorce attorney Allura Grant in the Disney+ upcoming legal drama All’s Fair, tells the BBC she’s “more into criminal justice and reform work” and adds, “I don’t think I can ever really do family law”.

Kardashian has been studying to become a lawyer for the last six years, undertaking an apprenticeship that negates the need for a university degree.

“It was the wildest idea that I was going to law school – but to me it all makes sense and I hope that I’m forever curious and always want to try new things,” she says.

Kardashian, who has four children with ex-husband Kanye West, also runs fashion and shapewear brand SKIMS and appears in the reality series The Kardashians with her family.

Her interest in criminal justice has been documented on her reality TV shows, where she has advocated for prison reform in the US and sentence reduction for first-time offenders.

Not content with her already packed-out schedule, her recent pivot to acting has raised eyebrows – but it hasn’t dented Kardashian’s ambition.

“I guess I just don’t live in those expectation boxes,” she says.

She says she “loves taking on constructive criticism” but doesn’t understand why people think she “can’t do something that you want to do or are curious or want to learn about”.

My Nollywood “bad boy” image was a career strategy

0
Jim Iyke

Nollywood Actor Jim Iyke has revealed how his refusal to play minor roles and his determination to redefine standards in Nollywood established him as one of the industry’s most recognisable names.

“When I came into Nollywood, they refused to give me lead roles. I refused to take small roles. It was a deadlock,” he stated. “Producers called me stubborn. They thought I was arrogant, but I had a plan.”

He recounted a pivotal moment when, after being offered a lead role in ‘Prisoner’, he decided to elevate the production’s quality himself.

“They gave me 22,000 naira. I took 18,000 and bought my own costumes. I wanted to look like the rich character I was playing. They thought I was crazy, but it worked.”

Jim said his insistence on excellence was born out of a desire to prove himself beyond industry bias.

“I told a producer who mocked me, ‘Very soon you’ll work for me.’ I didn’t know why I said it, but it came from conviction.”

The actor said that his so-called “bad boy” image was a strategic choice. “They thought it was just attitude. But I had an agenda, to impose myself on a system that refused to see my worth.”

Death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi reaches 40 in the Philippines

Rescue workers walk carrying a man after flooding caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi

The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has risen to 40, officials said on Tuesday, as the powerful storm unleashed heavy rains and floods across the central region, submerging homes and forcing thousands to evacuate.

Although Kalmaegi, locally named Tino, has weakened since making landfall early on Tuesday, it continued to lash the country with winds of 130 kph (81mph) and gusts of 180 kph (112mph) as it swept across the Visayas islands headed for northern Palawan and towards the South China Sea.

The number of people killed climbed to 40 late on Tuesday, all but one of those in the central province of Cebu, provincial information officer Ainjeliz Orong said. One person was reported dead on the nearby island of Bohol, according to the disaster agency.

Asked why the sudden jump in casualties, Orong said rescue operations were underway and information had just started to come through.

“Search and rescue efforts continue and there are missing and unaccounted individuals,” Orong said in a phone message, adding the deaths were due to drowning and falling debris.

Tens of thousands of residents were evacuated across the Visayas region, including parts of southern Luzon and northern Mindanao, authorities said. The typhoon was expected to leave the Philippines late on Wednesday or early Thursday.
