Arsenal, Sunderland share the spoil at the Stadium of Light

Arsenal vs Sunderland

Brian Brobbey scored a dramatic late equaliser as Arsenal conceded their first goals since September and had to settle for a point against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats have been a breath of fresh air on their return to the top flight and rose to the challenge of facing a side who had won their past 10 games across all competitions.

Sunderland were rewarded for an impressive first-half display when Dan Ballard – who came through the Arsenal academy – drove in the opener as the visitors let in a goal for the first time in 812 minutes.

Arsenal came out stronger in the second half and equalised when Declan Rice won the ball in midfield and it was worked to Bukayo Saka, who squeezed in a right-foot shot at the near post.

Martin Zubimendi struck the woodwork with a fierce effort as Arsenal pushed for a winner, which they thought they had got when Leandro Trossard sent a superb 20-yard finish into the top left corner.

But the hosts did not give up.

David Raya made one stop to thwart Brobbey, but the substitute was not to be denied when another chance came his way to be the Sunderland hero.

He hooked a shot into the back of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time to spark delighted celebrations on Wearside.

Manchester United, Tottenham in four-goal-thriller

Matthijs de Ligt scored an equaliser

Matthijs de Ligt scored an equaliser deep into stoppage time to earn Manchester United a point in a dramatic finale to their Premier League match at Tottenham.

The Dutch defender headed home a corner in the last of six minutes of stoppage time to snatch a draw for United in a game they seemed to have control of – then almost lost.

Bryan Mbeumo had put the visitors ahead in the first half by heading home Amad Diallo’s precise right-wing cross.

When United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made excellent saves to deny Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven after the break, Tottenham looked to be heading for their third successive home Premier League defeat.

However, the boos that accompanied Mathys Tel’s introduction for Xavi Simons midway through the second half turned to cheers when he swivelled on to a cross six minutes from time, evaded the attentions of De Ligt and crashed a shot home.

The relief inside the stadium was palable – but much more was to come.

Richarlison – the subject of so much criticism recently – thought he had won it for Spurs when he flicked Wilson Odobert’s long-range shot past Lammens.

But United, who finished with 10 men as striker Benjamin Sesko was injured after they had used all five substitutes, had other ideas.

Holy Stars players celebrating a goal

Basake Holy Stars recorded their first victory of the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over reigning champions Bibiani GoldStars at the AAK Sports Arena in Ampain on Sunday.

After eight games without a win, the hosts finally came alive in front of their home fans, producing a commanding first-half display that sealed all three points before the break.

Prince Opoku opened the scoring for Holy Stars in the 36th minute, finishing off a well-worked team move that left the GoldStars defence flat-footed.

Four minutes later, Prince Tweneboah doubled the lead with a composed effort, sending the home supporters into celebration for the first time this season, as their side took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

GoldStars, who came into the game unbeaten in their last four matches, struggled to impose themselves and were second-best for much of the contest.

Despite a few second-half chances, the visitors could not find a way past a resolute Holy Stars defence, which stood firm to protect their first clean sheet of the season.

The result ends Holy Stars’ eight-game winless streak and lifts morale in Ampain, while GoldStars’ inconsistent away form continues to be a major concern for the Miners.

Morifing Donzo’s Goal Gives Kotoko Victory over Hearts

Kotoko and Hearts players fight for the ball

Morifing Donzo’s first-half goal handed Asante Kotoko a crucial 1–0 victory over archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak on Matchday 9 of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The atmosphere was electric even before kickoff, with both sets of fans confident their teams could claim the bragging rights.

Kotoko started the brighter side, showing more intent and sharpness in the opening stages. Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when they were awarded a penalty, which Donzo calmly converted and that ultimately decided the game.

Hearts of Oak returned from the break with renewed energy and dominated much of the second half. They looked threatening in attack, but once again, their lack of clinical finishing in front of goal proved costly a problem that has plagued them since the start of the season.

Head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani made several tactical changes that swung the momentum toward Hearts, but Kotoko’s disciplined backline stood firm and repelled every dangerous move.

In the dying moments, Hearts thought they had equalised, but their goal was ruled out for offside. Despite their improved second-half performance, Kotoko held their ground and walked away with all three points.

After the final whistle, a few Hearts players confronted the referee in a manner that breached the spirit of fair play. While the situation was quickly brought under control, it highlighted the need for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to strengthen measures that ensure the protection of match officials.

Although it’s still early in the season, history suggests that the winner of the first-round clash between these two giants often goes on to win the league while the losing side struggles to recover. Kotoko fans will certainly hope that pattern continues in their favour.

Police Probe Death of Siano Soccer Academy Player Amid Sexual Abuse Allegations

Ghana Police
The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior footballer with Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, who allegedly suffered sexual abuse at the hands of his coach before his death.

According to a statement from the Police, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police in February 2025 that her son had died after falling ill on February 28, 2025. She further alleged that before his death, Ransford had confided in her that his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him.

The case has since been taken over by the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further investigation.

Police said the suspect, Anyass Ibrahim, was arrested on November 4, 2025, to assist with investigations. He was interrogated, his statement taken, and later granted bail, with a directive to report regularly to the CID Headquarters.

A review of medical reports submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Children’s Hospital) in Kumasi suggests that the deceased was treated for liver and kidney-related conditions prior to his death.

The Police added that efforts are underway to obtain official medical reports from both facilities to confirm these findings. A court order has been secured to compel the hospitals to release the documents after earlier requests were declined.

Meanwhile, investigators have extended their probe following the emergence of a viral video showing the suspect, Ibrahim, in a compromising situation with a minor.

The Police have urged members of the public with credible information related to the case to contact the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or report to the nearest Police Station to assist ongoing investigations.

Police Arrest Suspect

Two men, Issaka Jamal, aged 30, and Kwadwo Badu, aged 40, have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following a robbery and carjacking incident that occurred at Mpatasie, near St. Anthony Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

According to police sources, on November 7, 2025, the CID Headquarters intercepted intelligence from the Bohyen District Police concerning the robbery incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had escaped from Kumasi and were heading toward Accra in the complainant’s unregistered Hyundai Tucson.

Acting swiftly, the CID Unit Command activated its intelligence operations and mounted surveillance to track the suspects. On November 8, 2025, a team conducting follow-up operations spotted the said vehicle with about four occupants along the Ofankor Barrier–St. John’s stretch on the Accra–Nsawam Highway.

When the officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the suspects tried to flee. However, realizing they had been surrounded, they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The police pursued and arrested two of the suspects—Jamal and Badu—while the remaining two managed to escape.

During the arrest, one suspect sustained a gunshot wound while the other suffered minor injuries. Both were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they are currently in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Police retrieved the unregistered Hyundai Tucson, a customized number plate (Congo-1-24), GH₵5,900 in cash, and various documents and personal effects from the scene.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the two remaining suspects who are currently on the run.

Police urge the public to provide any credible information that could assist in their arrest.

Western Region NDC Chairman Fumes Over Railway Scrap Allegations

The Western Regional Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Kojo Toku, has strongly refuted allegations linking him to a supposed deal involving railway scraps in the region.

In a statement issued in Takoradi and signed by his Special Aide, Eric Kweku Kyeremah, the Regional Chairman described the claims as “baseless, mischievous, and a deliberate fabrication by detractors seeking to tarnish my hard-earned image.”

The controversy stems from claims by a group of scrap dealers, said to be sympathizers of the NDC, who allege they are demanding a refund of GH₵330,000, purportedly paid to some constituency chairmen of the party to secure access to 100 tonnes of railway materials.

One of the dealers, identified as Alhaji Razak, speaking on a Takoradi-based radio station, alleged that he and his colleagues had paid the amount to certain party officers and planned to petition the regional executives for a refund.

The allegations follow a National Security operation that reportedly clamped down on the activities of the said scrap dealers at the Takoradi Harbour.

However, in a swift response, the statement from the NDC Regional Chairman categorically denied any involvement in the matter.

“The Regional Chairman has no involvement whatsoever—directly or indirectly—in any transaction, decision, or activity relating to the said railway scraps,” the statement emphasized.

Nana Toku, who is widely regarded as a unifying figure within the NDC’s Western Regional structure, said it was regrettable that some individuals would attempt to smear his name for political gain.

“Any attempt to link my name to this matter is a deliberate act of mischief aimed at tarnishing my hard-earned reputation,” he declared.

He further stated that he remains steadfast in upholding the values of transparency, accountability, and integrity that guide his leadership within the party.

The Regional Chairman, therefore, urged party members, the media, and the general public to disregard the unfounded allegations and treat them with the contempt they deserve.

Meanwhile, party insiders say Nana Toku remains focused on strengthening unity within the NDC, mobilizing grassroots support, and ensuring the party maintains its dominance in the Western Region ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern over a road accident involving a team of journalists who were covering illegal mining activities in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In a statement issued on Friday, November 7, 2025, and signed by the Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, the Association conveyed solidarity and sympathy to the affected journalists, their families, and their media organizations.

“We stand in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organizations,” the statement read.

The GJA emphasized that the safety and welfare of journalists remain paramount, describing the incident as a stark reminder of the risks reporters face while pursuing stories of national interest, particularly on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The Association said it is working closely with relevant authorities and partners to ensure that the affected journalists receive the necessary medical treatment and emotional support.

Mr. Domfeh also called on institutions and agencies that engage the media in field operations—especially in high-risk zones—to prioritize safety protocols and ensure proper coordination and preparedness before embarking on such assignments.

“As journalists continue to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it is imperative that their safety be given topmost priority,” the statement added.

The Ashanti GJA reaffirmed its commitment to stand by its members and provide support as they recover from the incident.
