2023 Presidency: Buhari speaks on his successor

0
President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has downplayed the possibility of having a preferred candidate for the 2023 Presidential election.

Buhari said he has no favourite candidate for the 2023 Presidential election.

He promised to hand over power to whoever Nigerians elect as his successor in 2023.

Buhari spoke while fielding questions from journalists after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers in Abuja.

Buhari said he has no special candidate to replace him next year.

Instead, the President said the one who would succeed him is “the person that Nigerians elect”.

The President also urged security agencies to redouble efforts in the fight against insecurity.

“We’ll continue to make the environment secure, especially when the rainy season is coming, so that farmers can go back to their farms and we wouldn’t have problems of food security.

“Heads of the services — army, navy, air force, the inspector-general of police, and so on — are very much aware of the situation. It’s their duty to know where the terrorists are and eliminate them,” he said.

Kwaw Kese calls out Burna Boy for performing ‘Second Sermon Remix’ at Madison Square Garden without Blacko

Kwaw Kese

Rapper, Kwaw Kese, has called out Nigerian musician, Burna Boy, for performing Black Sherif’s song alone at his concert in Madison Square Garden, New York.

According to him, the Grammy award-winning artiste had promised to take Black Sherif on tour with him to perform the Second Sermon remix following its release in 2021.

However, the recent action of Burna Boy has brought into question whether he meant his words or lied, Kwaw Kese noted.

Taking to Twitter, the Abodam hitmaker wrote “Burna promised to take Blacko on tour but he’s on tour performing Blacko songs without him. @burnaboy you lied ???”

This comes barely 24 hours after Burn Boy performed at his sold-out concert at the Madison Square Garden in New York to elated fans.

Among the songs he performed was the remix of Second Sermon he did with rapper Black Sherif.

The DJ at the concert, before Burna Boy showed up on stage, also played ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ and many of the patrons in attendance were seen singing along.

After his performance many Ghanaians applauded Burna Boy for pushing the Ghanaian talent’s music as much as he can, especially since he also performed it in Geneva when he was on tour.

Thus, while a section of the public sided with him, many people disagreed with Kwaw Kese’s opinion.

They believe this is a good thing for Ghanaian music and Black Sherif’s career, especially since many of the audience were seen singing along to the lyrics in Twi.

I stopped shooting night scenes because I was going blind – Agya Koo

0
Agya Koo

Ghanaian actor, Agya Koo, says he quit acting in the night because the lights on set were damaging his eyes. According to the popular actor and comedian, although he told some Kumawood Movie Producers and Directors about this condition, they didn’t believe him.

He indicated that they rather thought he was being arrogant.

Agya Koo, who is known legally as Alex Kofi Adu, said the producers and directors claimed his uppity arose because he thought he had no competitor in the industry.

“I stopped shooting night scenes in movies because I was going blind. The light used to shoot night scenes was affecting my eyes and it gave me some eye problems.

“I told the producers what I was going through. And implored them to remove night scenes from my scenes to help protect my eyes.”

He made this revelation in an interview with Ike De Unpredictable on Kumasi-based Angel Fm’s Entertainment show.

In recent times, Agya Koo has been heard on numerous platforms talking about a group of Kumawood producers, directors and actors who orchestrated his elimination from the industry.

Responding to the comments by Agya Koo on the same show, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), Mawule Ekpe Peter, known popularly as Abro, challenged Agya Koo to name the producers who met to plot his undoing.

He added that Agya Koo’s perception is not factual as any such meeting was held.

“I have also heard the same allegation from Agya Koo that some Kumawood Producers plotted his downfall but I swear to God that no producer plotted Agya Koo’s downfall.”

He continued that the Kumawood Movie Industry and its producers “still need Agya Koo back.”

He said he “will be very happy if Agya Koo will be bold enough to name the producers who plotted against him.”

With the future in mind, Abro indicated that it’s high time this longstanding issue is solved to help rebuild Ghana’s wobbling movie industry.

“We need to draw the line and address this issue. So, Agya Koo should help the executives of FIPAG and name the producers who plotted against him. It will help us address the issue between him (Agya Koo) and the producers so we can work together as a team and revive the industry.”

Agya Koo, who chose not to mention any names, however said he is sure his assertions will be proved correct someday.

“I leave everything to God because it seems people always get me wrong when I speak the truth but God will surely fight for me. One day the truth will come out and the world will know the bad treatment I received from some producers.”

Low water levels reveal body in barrel at Lake Mead, officials say more are likely to be found

0
The Las Vegas Boat Harbor & Lake Mead Marina in February.

The plunging water level in Lake Mead — the country’s largest reservoir, besieged by drought — unveiled another disturbing discovery over the weekend, police say: a body in a barrel.

A person who was spending time at the lake Sunday afternoon found the barrel, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Homicide Lieutenant Ray Spencer. The person could see the remains in the barrel because it was corroded.

Investigators believe the body to be that of a homicide victim from the 1980s, based on the items recovered from the barrel, Spencer says.

“The lake has drained dramatically over the last 15 years,” Spencer said, noting that “it’s likely that we will find additional bodies that have been dumped in Lake Mead” as the water level drops more.

“The barrel was likely dropped hundreds of yards off the shore back then,” Spencer said, “but that area is now considered the shoreline.”

Homicide investigators plan to consult with scientists at the University of Nevada Las Vegas to determine whether the rate of corrosion is consistent with the barrel being in freshwater for that long.

The body underwent an autopsy Monday morning, Spencer says. Autopsy results were not yet available Monday afternoon, according to the Clark County Coroner’s office.

Mali: Military government breaks defence accords with France

Malick Diaw, right, addresses members of the council during a meeting to vote on a revised charter in Bamako on February 21

Mali’s ruling military has announced it is breaking its defence accords with former colonial ruler France, condemning “flagrant violations” of its national sovereignty by the French troops stationed there.

The announcement was the latest sign of deteriorating relations between Mali and France.

Authorities in Bamako said they had informed Paris of the decision on Monday afternoon.

France so far has not issued an official reaction to the announcement.

“For some time now, the government of the Republic of Mali notes with regret a profound deterioration in military cooperation with France,” spokesman Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga said in a televised statement.

Maiga cited multiple instances of French forces having violated the country’s airspace.

He referred to the June 2021 move by France to end joint operations with Malian forces and mentioned another decision taken in February to pull French troops out of the West African state.

The agreements Mali has ended were those that set the framework for France’s intervention in Mali in 2014.

They were signed a year after France deployed a large force to help Mali’s army stop an offensive by armed groups there.

Tensions between France and the military government in Mali, which seized power in August 2020, had been rising for some time.

Since then, France’s relationship with Mali has worsened as the government resisted international pressure to set a timetable for a swift return to democratic governance.

Protests in US after leaked draft opinion to overturn Roe v Wade

0
A crowd of people gather outside the Supreme Court after a majority Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v Wade leaked

The 1973 ruling prohibited states from banning abortions across the US and is a bedrock of modern US abortion rights.

Pro-abortion rights supporters and anti-abortion rights activists took to the streets of the United States capital on Monday night, shortly after a leaked draft majority opinion indicated the country’s conservative-controlled Supreme Court planned to overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling, which legalised abortion nationwide.

The rival protests in Washington, DC embodied a debate over access to abortion that has polarised US politics for decades.

In front of the Supreme Court, hundreds of abortion rights supporters shouted “Abortion is healthcare” and “My body, my choice”.

Meanwhile, anti-abortion rights advocates also gathered at the site chanted slogans such as, “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Roe v Wade has got to go”.

The 1973 Roe v Wade ruling prohibited states from banning abortions within the first trimester of pregnancy, arguing that the hardship caused by prohibiting abortions amounted to a violation of an individual’s constitutionally protected right to privacy.

Subsequent Supreme Court rulings, notably in the Planned Parenthood of southeastern Pennsylvania versus Casey in 1992, have further prohibited states from creating “undue burdens” for those seeking an abortion.

Putin may soon officially declare war on Ukraine -US and Western officials say

0
Russia-Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin could formally declare war on Ukraine as soon as May 9, a move that would enable the full mobilization of Russia’s reserve forces as invasion efforts continue to falter, US and Western officials believe.

May 9, known as “Victory Day” inside of Russia, commemorates the country’s defeat of the Nazis in 1945. Western officials have long believed that Putin would leverage the symbolic significance and propaganda value of that day to announce either a military achievement in Ukraine, a major escalation of hostilities — or both.

Officials have begun to hone in on one scenario, which is that Putin formally declares war on Ukraine on May 9. To date, Putin has insisted on referring to the brutal monthslong conflict as a “special military operation,” effectively banning words such as invasion and war.

“I think he will try to move from his ‘special operation,'” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told LBC Radio last week. “He’s been rolling the pitch, laying the ground for being able to say ‘look, this is now a war against Nazis, and what I need is more people. I need more Russian cannon fodder.'”

Throughout the conflict Putin has continuously framed his invasion of Ukraine — a country with a Jewish president — as a campaign of supposed “denazification,” a description dismissed by historians and political observers alike.

Wallace added that he “would not be surprised, and I don’t have any information about this, that he is probably going to declare on this May Day that ‘we are now at war with the world’s Nazis and we need to mass mobilize the Russian people.'”

A formal declaration of war on May 9 could potentially bolster public support for the invasion. It would also, under Russian law, allow Putin to mobilize reserve forces and draft conscripts, which officials say Russia desperately needs amid a growing manpower shortage. Western and Ukrainian officials have estimated that at least 10,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war since Russia invaded just over two months ago.
