Israel court paves way for eviction of 1,000 Palestinians from West Bank

Palestinians from West Bank

After a two-decade legal battle, Israel’s high court has ruled that about 1,000 Palestinians can be evicted from an area of the West Bank and the land repurposed for Israeli military use, in one of the single biggest expulsion decisions since the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1967.

About 3,000 hectares of Masafer Yatta, a rural area of the south Hebron hills under full Israeli control and home to several small Palestinian villages, was designated as a “firing zone” by the Israeli state in the 1980s, to be used for military exercises, in which the presence of civilians is prohibited.

According to the Geneva conventions pertaining to humanitarian treatment in war, it is illegal to expropriate occupied land for purposes that do not benefit the people living there, or to forcibly transfer the local population.

Israel has argued, however, that the Masafer Yatta villagers living in Firing Zone 918, farming and raising animals there, were not permanent residents of the area when the firing zone was declared, and therefore have no rights to the land.

Drug Lord. Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias ‘Otoniel’ (R)

One of Colombia’s most notorious drug lords has been extradited to the United States to face drug trafficking charges.

“I want to reveal that Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias ‘Otoniel’ has been extradited,” President Ivan Duque announced on Twitter on Wednesday, calling him “the most dangerous drug trafficker in the world”.

Usuga, 50, was the most wanted person in Colombia until he was arrested last October in the northwest of the country after a massive military operation.

Duque described Usuga as a “murderer of social leaders and police, an abuser of boys, girls and teenagers”.

On Wednesday afternoon, a convoy of five bulletproof police vehicles transported Usuga from a prison in the capital, Bogota, to a military airport, where he was handed over to US Drug Enforcement Administration officials.

Images shared by local media showed a handcuffed Usuga seated in a plane alongside Colombian police and an Interpol official.

Togo agrees to mediate in Mali political crisis

Togo President Faure Gnassingbe

Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe has agreed to act as a mediator in Mali’s political crisis as the West African country’s military government faces pressure to re-establish civilian rule, their foreign ministers have said.

Since August 2020 when the military seized power in the Sahel state, Mali has been in turmoil. There are ongoing negotiations within the administration over the length of time needed to restore constitutional order.

Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and his Togolese counterpart told reporters late Wednesday in Togo’s capital Lome that Gnassingbe had agreed to act as a facilitator in the crisis.

“We asked President Faure Gnassingbe to use his good office, wisdom and experience to facilitate dialogue with regional actors and more broadly dialogue with the entire international community,” Diop said. “The situation we are in today requires that we show political genius about how to get out of this situation.”

Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey confirmed the offer was accepted.

Chinese woman rescued from rubble after six days

Chinese woman rescued

Rescuers in the central Chinese city of Changsha have pulled a woman alive from the rubble of a six-storey building six days after it collapsed. She was conscious during her extraction just after midnight (16:00 GMT Wednesday) and advised rescuers how to bring her out safely, state media say. Ten people are known to have survived the disaster but at least five were killed and dozens are still missing. Arrests have been made as the building’s safety is investigated.

Weak safety and construction standards, along with corruption among local officials, have led to a number of building collapses in China. Rescuers in Changsha used traditional methods to detect signs of life – shouting, knocking and sniffer dogs – as well as drones. The survivor brought out early on Thursday had spent about 132 hours trapped in the debris.

Another woman who was rescued after 88 hours has described how she kept herself alive by rationing drinking water and staying warm. The unnamed 21-year-old was in bed when the rear of the building, which contained flats and businesses, caved in last Friday afternoon.

Flight returns to Heathrow after pilot roster error

The Virgin Atlantic aircraft was bound for New York JFK Airport

A Virgin Atlantic aircraft turned back to Heathrow after it emerged the first officer had not completed his final flying test. About 40 minutes into the flight to New York on Monday, the two pilots became aware of the “rostering error”, the airline said. Flight VS3 had reached the skies over Ireland before returning to Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic said a replacement for the first officer was found and the plane departed again for New York.

The airline insisted safety was not compromised and explained the initial first officer joined Virgin Atlantic in 2017. He was fully qualified under UK aviation regulations, the airline added, but had not completed a final assessment flight that was part of the airline’s internal requirements.

The flight turned back as the captain had not been designated as a trainer. Control of an aircraft is usually shared between a first officer and the captain, but the latter holds ultimate responsibility for what happens on a flight.

Wealthy Russians flee to Dubai to avoid sanctions

Dubai

Dubai has emerged as a haven for wealthy Russians fleeing the impact of western sanctions over the war in Ukraine. Russian billionaires and entrepreneurs have been arriving in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in unprecedented numbers, business leaders told the BBC.

Property purchases in Dubai by Russians surged by 67% in the first three months of 2022, a report said. The UAE has not put sanctions on Russia or criticised its invasion of Ukraine.

It is also providing visas to non-sanctioned Russians while many Western countries have restricted them.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people have left Russia over the last two months – although exact figures are not available. One Russian economist said as many as 200,000 Russians had left in the first 10 days after the war began.

Virtuzone, which helps companies to set up operations in Dubai, has seen a huge surge of Russian clients. “We are receiving five times more enquiries from Russians since the war began,” said chief executive George Hojeige.
