The newly-appointed Niger State Coordinator of Nigeria Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Ahmed Emimaru, has called on marketers to desist from selling above the regulatory price of product in the state.

Emimaru made this known during a meeting with the officials of the state Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Minna.

He explained that to ensure strict compliance, the authority will conduct more monitoring and surveillance as frequently as possible in the state.

In his response, the chairman Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Minna, Adamu Ahmed Erena, noted the need for harmonious working relationship between the authority and his members devoid of witch hunting.

He lamented that the owners of private depots were their major challenge as they sell above the official price currently.

He then appealed to the authorities to intervene by compelling them to comply with the policy to ensure quality service delivery to the people and nation.

Earlier at a maiden meeting he held with newly deployed workers to Minna office of NMDPRA, Emimaru warned them not to be found wanting in anything that will undermine the organization.

He also advised the worker on the need to respect the organizational procedure in carrying out their responsibilities to enhance development to ensure better results.

Lagos govt cracks down on commercial motorcyclists

Following the killing of a sound engineer, David Umoh, last week at Admiralty Way, the Lagos State Taskforce on environmental offences said it has arrested 10 commercial motorcyclists operating in Lekki.

Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the Director, Press and Public Affairs of the agency, said in a statement Monday that the agency also impounded 123 motorcycles.

The police had earlier arrested four people who allegedly took part in the jungle justice against Mr Imoh, 38.

The task force spokesperson said the raid of the motorcycles was in connection with Mr Imoh’s killing by some commercial motorcyclists.

He said that the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, Shola Jejeloye, led a team of officers and men to the axis to carry out the raid on commercial motorcyclists operating illegally in that area.

Mr Abdulraheem said the operation lasted for about four hours, beginning in the early hours of Monday at Lekki Epe Expressway, Lekki Phase 1 axis, Admiralty Way, and its environs.

He said the agency had always arrested and seized motorcycles plying one-way and restricted routes but the motorcyclists return to the same roads the following week.

“Some even put up resistance when apprehended because they see nothing wrong in what they are doing,” he added.

“The murder of Mr David Imoh by the suspected Okada men is a painful and tragic incident, hence the need to intensify our activities in the axis and in the State.

“We want to ensure that the menace of Okada is brought to a complete halt and also prevent a reoccurrence of such an inhumane and barbaric act.”

Mr Abdulraheem noted that they would reinforce Operation Kogberegbe, which was launched because of the menace of the Okada operators, to put an end to the nuisance caused by them.

Gbenga Omotoso, the commissioner for information and strategy, stated on Monday that he had spoken with Mr Imoh’s family and that two survivors of the act were still in the hospital.

He extended the condolences of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and assured that the government would address the root cause of the mob attack and similar incidents, which had caused public anxiety.

“Government implores residents to remain calm as police continue to investigate the matter.

“Lagos has no room for savagery and anybody found to have been involved in the barbarism will surely face the law.

“We condemn and will not condone any kind of jungle justice, no matter who the perpetrators are,’’ Mr Omotoso said.

Music producers must be paid well –Kwesi Arthur

Kwesi Arthur

Versatile Ghanaian artist, Kwesi Arthur, says music producers in the country must be well remunerated because the amounts they are paid are not good enough. In an interview with pulse.com.gh, the rapper and singer, who has just released an album dubbed “Son of Jacob,” said producers deserve more than they get from their work.

“There is more that could be done. Most of the producers get paid a certain amount and that is it. They don’t get any royalties or anything and the amount they are paid is not good at all.”

He pointed out that when he looks at what goes on behind the scenes, it is largely the artists and the record labels that benefit from the songs mostly.

“I feel like there’s more that could be done to compensate our producers fairly and keep them going. I see some of the things that goes on in the background and most at times, the artists are the ones who get most of the funds or the label. Producers too should get something.”

Kwesi Arthur big-upped the producers who assisted him to complete his first studio album. To him, their contributions were “instrumental” and without them the project wouldn’t have been what it is. Producers have often complained about the seeming disregard of their input in the music industry.

In an interview on HitzFm last month, renowned music producer, Wei Ye Oteng, lamented about the wages producers get for their work, describing it as unreasonable.

“Sometimes the charges that our artistes in this country would want to pay for that quality, oh my God, it’s so absurd… it’s sad.”

“Most of the musicians in this country do not pay the engineers well.”

North Korea on brink of Covid-19 catastrophe, say experts

0
North Korea leader Kim Hong-Ji

North Korea stands on the brink of a Covid-19 catastrophe unless swift action is taken to provide vaccines and drug treatments, experts have warned, as the number of people reported to have fallen ill rose to almost 1.5 million.

The isolated country reported another big rise in new cases of what it continues to refer to as “fever” on Tuesday, days after it admitted it had identified Covid-19 infections for the first time since the start of the global pandemic.

It recorded 269,510 additional cases and six more deaths – bringing the total to 56 since late last month. About 1.48 million people have become ill with the virus since the first case was reported last Thursday and at least 663,910 people were in quarantine, according to official figures. The outbreak is almost certainly greater than the official tally, given a lack of tests and resources to monitor and treat the sick.

A significant Covid-19 outbreak could unleash a humanitarian crisis in North Korea, where the economy has been battered by the pandemic-enforced closure of its border with China – its main trading partner – natural disasters, and years of international sanctions imposed in response to ballistic missile tests.

Clashes in Libya as would-be prime minister attempts to claim power

Forces loyal to Abdul Hamid Dbeibah patrol Tripoli

Fighting broke out in Tripoli after one of the two rival Libyan prime ministers entered the capital to claim the role only to flee hours later when he realised he had misjudged the scale of military opposition.

Fathi Bashagha said he had retreated to prevent further bloodshed. It was clear he found that the levels of militia support he had been promised were not forthcoming. He had entered the city in secret overnight with the support of one powerful armed group, the eighth brigade, but it found itself isolated and no other support arrived from outside the city.

In statements before his retreat, Bashagha’s camp made it clear they had planned to take control of the government, and claimed he had received a warm reception in the capital.

The bulk of the clashes occurred at dawn.

There has been stalemate in Libya with rival groups claiming to run the country. Parliamentary and presidential elections planned for last December had to be shelved as the eligibility of various candidates was disputed, and there was no consensus that the result would be honoured.

Ethiopia to get $300m World Bank grant for reconstruction

Ethiopia gets $300m from World Bank

Ethiopia and the World Bank have signed a pact for a grant of $300m to assist reconstruction and recovery in conflict-hit areas, the finance ministry said.

Fighting that erupted in the northern region of Tigray in November 2020, and spilled over into neighbouring Afar and Amhara last year, has eased since a unilateral ceasefire was declared by the federal government in March.

“The resource will be used to finance the activities designed to support … basic services,” the ministry said in a statement late on Monday.

Services that stand to benefit are education, health, water supply and a special effort to support survivors of gender-based violence in conflict-hit areas, it said.

Areas in Amhara, Afar, Tigray and the regions of Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz are targeted to receive the funds, it said, adding that the government would sign up with third-party organisations to execute the project in high-conflict areas.

The violence in Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz, home to several ethnic groups, is separate from the war in Tigray.

Guinea Bissau president dissolves parliament in new political row

0
President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau

President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has dissolved Guinea-Bissau’s parliament and said early parliamentary elections would be held this year to resolve a long-running political crisis.

Tensions between parliament and the presidency have gripped the West African state for months.

Embalo cited “persistent and unresolvable differences” with parliament, which he described as “a space for guerrilla politics and plotting”, in a statement on Monday.

“This political crisis has exhausted the capital of trust between the sovereign institutions,” he said. “I have decided to give the floor back to Guineans so that this year they can freely choose the parliament they wish to have.”

A presidential decree said parliamentary elections would be held on December 18. The former Portuguese colony of about two million people is notoriously unstable and has suffered four military coups since 1974, most recently in 2012.

In 2014, Guinea-Bissau decided to return to democracy, but it has enjoyed little stability since and the armed forces wield substantial clout.
