Pro-Akoto candidates win big in U/W

0
Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto

As political stakeholders still come to terms with the “shocking performance” of how pro Akoto candidates beat the top 3 contenders to win 42% of total valid votes cast in the North, the “Akoto factor” is still making impressive inroads across the sister regions of the North.

Results from our independent research from the Upper West Region further cements what we have already known and predicted; that Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto is strongly preferred by the grassroots within the party.

Official election results coupled with our research indicates that pro Owusu Afriyie Akoto candidates have once again won a majority of positions in the recently ended party elections across the 11 constituencies in the region.

The table below contains official data on the outcome of elections from the 11 constituencies in the Upper East Region.

From our table, the data is clear in its interpretation and breakdown.

We observed that pro Akoto candidates won 80% of all 10 contested positions in Lambusie, 90% in Wa West, 70% in DBI, 80% in Wa East, 90% in Jirapa, 60% in Nadowli, and 30% in Lawra and Wa Central respectively and 20% in Sisala East.

However, in the Sisala West and Nandom constituencies, team Akoto lost ground to pro-Bawumia candidates adding up to team Bawumia’s victory in other areas including Nandom, Lawra and Wa Central. However, these wins are not significant compared to margins of pro Akoto candidates.

For the 11 constituencies that our team independently verified, team Afriyie Akoto won 50 % of total regions, followed by team Bawumia with 34% of valid votes cast, 15% for team Alan Kyerematen and 1% for team Agyarko.

From the data, we also observed that 1% of party members across the 11 constituencies were undecided and/or preferred to remain neutral.

Aside from these two regions, our independent research team has data from other regions across the country which puts team Akoto ahead of all the other candidates in the race.

In this decisive period, our research is pointing us in a peculiar direction that the Akoto factor is still leading in the NPP’s search for a new leader to break the 8.

Although some may say our prediction is too early, we are keenly observing that the party is speaking, and this time, quite succinctly through their votes.

The message is clear: “It is Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto’s moment” and he is seizing it tactfully.

Accra Lions, Aduana Stars game end in stalemate

Aduana Stars

Accra Lions held Aduana Stars to a draw stalemate at the Accra Sports Stadium. Debutants Accra Lions were in need of all the three points at home but ended up sharing the spoils with visiting Dormaa Aduana Stars, to climb to the 12th spot with 40 points, whilst Aduana dropped to the 5th spot with 44 points.

In a fairly defensive match that saw a lot of action in the middle of the field which failed to yield any clear cut scoring opportunities for either team, both sides, especially Lions, will be content with the outcome, which left them not succumbing to the Ogya lads on their home turf.

Bechem United vs Legon Cities

Bechem United blew the chance to return to second place on the table after playing out a 0-0 draw with Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League.

Legon Cities needed to respond after their last visit ended in a 1-0 defeat against Accra Lions.

For Bechem, the midweek’s 2-2 draw at Real Tamale United might have contributed to this situation.

And they have not won at home in their last two matches- drawing 1-1 with Karela and Hearts of Oak.

Bechem United remain in third place with 49 points and Legon Cities improve to 43 points and in seventh place.

Mbappe scores hat-trick after new PSG deal

Mbappe joins colleagues to celebrate

Kylian Mbappe celebrated signing a new three-year Paris St-Germain contract in style by scoring a hat-trick in the champions’ final Ligue 1 game of the season. After announcing pre-match he had turned down a move to Real Madrid to stay in Paris, the striker was at his best as PSG relegated Metz. Brazilian Neymar was also on target, scoring his 100th goal for the club.

Angel di Maria completed the scoring in his last appearance for PSG. The Argentine has been with the club for seven years and has been linked with a move to Juventus.

Mbappe’s treble means he finishes Ligue 1’s top scorer with 28 goals, three ahead of Monaco’s Wissam ben Yedder. The result sent Metz into Ligue 2 along with Bordeaux, who were relegated after 30 consecutive years in the top flight despite a 4-2 win at Stade Brestois as they finished bottom of the table.

St Etienne salvaged a 1-1 draw at Nantes to finish 18th and set up a relegation/promotion play-off with Auxerre. Mbappe, 23, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, had been heavily linked with a move to Spain before committing his future to PSG. Spain’s La Liga has reacted angrily to the news, calling the deal “scandalous” and announcing it plans to file a complaint to Uefa as well as French and EU authorities.

Man City incredibly score 3 goals in 5 minutes to win title

Man City players celebrating the win

Manchester City staged a stunning late comeback with three goals in five minutes to beat Aston Villa and win the Premier League as their title chances looked to be slipping away amid dramatic scenes at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s needed victory to secure their fourth title in five seasons but were facing the prospect of ending the season empty-handed as goals either side of the interval from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho put Villa 2-0 ahead and in control.

It looked as if Villa manager Steven Gerrard might help his former club Liverpool secure the title – until City turned the game on its ahead in at atmosphere bordering on hysteria.

Ilkay Gundogan, on as a substitute for Bernardo Silva, gave City hope with a far-post header in the 76th minute, and Etihad Stadium was a wall of noise when Rodri drove a low finish past Villa keeper Robin Olsen two minutes later.

The title-winning recovery was complete with nine minutes left as Gundogan once again arrived at the far post to put City in front, the decisive contribution on this nerve-shredding final day.

City did need those three points as Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers – with City boss Guardiola overcome with emotion and breaking down in tears at the final whistle.

Radio stations are breaking up homes

0
Supt. Kaakyire Owoahene Achampong – Asokwa Municipal Police Commander

Supt. Kaakyire Owoahene Achampong, Asokwa Municipal Police Commander, has expressed worry over the discussion of marital issues and private life of couples in the air waves in the name of public interest.

The Police Chief’s worry stems from the fact that most of these radio stations are unable to amicably resolve the numerous marital problems they expose and make public on a daily basis without restraint and caution. “Eventually they (radio stations) start exposing what they cannot resolve, thus breaking homes,” the Commander pointed out.

According to him, most of the radio stations end up making mockery of the couples who they pretend to be helping to resolve issues, and attributed the many cases of divorce and broken homes to this emerging trend and development.

Speaking at a Public Education forum on the Ghana Case Tracking System and use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), organised by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Africa Office (an implementing partner of USAID Justice Sector Support Activity), in collaboration with the Muslim Family Counselling Services (MFCS) and the Asokwa Municipal Assembly, Supt. Achampong disclosed that most of these couples would use any abusive and unpredictable words against each other and expose their private lives in the public domain on the radio.

He noted that most of the couples later regret their actions and deeds and may want to come back to live together, but things might have got out of hand – beyond settlement. The Police Commander expressed the view that married issues and differences among couples were supposed to be resolved and settled by only the family members who were involved in the marriage rites and should not be on radio, and suggested that if possible, they should seek amicable settlement from Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), instead of exposing their privacy in the media, thus make things worse rather than resolving their differences.

Supt. Kaakyere Owoahene Achampong also sensitised on the human rights issues, cautioning the public to know their rights to avoid abusing their right to life, right to freedom and privacy, and ensure that we are equal before the law, irrespective of one’s status in society.

He further pleaded with Nananom (chiefs) to stop the act of double sales of land to different people to mitigate litigations.

Mr. Tijani Mahmoud, Programme Manager, stated that, in 2019, Ghana launched the first electronic Integrated Criminal Justice Case-Tracking System, and the success of the CTS required citizens’ involvement and their demand for utilisation of the ADR for resolving cases by justice sector institutions.

He explained that the education aims at advocating the effective utilisation of the system and thus increase  citizens’ awareness and understanding on the Case Tracking System (CTS) and encourage the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), Africa Office (an implementing partner of electronically access) and back the various stages of criminal cases from the point of arrest.

He underscored that (CTS) project is to support key stakeholders in the justice delivery system to collect, collate and harmonise statistical data for effective justice delivery.

Mr. Dickson Frimpong, the Asokwa Municipal Director of Social Welfare, stated that, the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is common to the people in the communities which they are applying without appreciating it, and for that matter, they are scaling up the sensitisation to reach out to the people in the communities to channel their cases.

He disclosed that, the Municipality receives a number of cases with regard to custody and maintenance and is able to educate their people and encouraged members of the public to seek for ADR, because the court process is huge and takes a lot of time and cost the poor people saying the ADR is the best option.

He mentioned some of the cases that could be addressed through ADR as family-related issues, including child paternity and maintenance issues, divorce cases, inheritance and property sharing issues, impasse between Landlord and tenants, insurance issues, Employer and employee issues, Debt recovery issues and others.
