Any Lessons Learnt (2) Any Measures to Promote what God has given us?

And he put it so beautifully and directly factual, that“Every bullet, every bomb, every shell that hits a target in Ukraine, hits our pockets and our economies in Africa, our president H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo must be applauded.

But the question is, why should it be so? Why should a country, like Ukraine with a land size of almost 604,000 km² and arable land of about 400,000 km² and very far from Africa, grow enough food to feed a continent, almost fifty-one times its size?

Ideally, Africa, have allowed ourselves to be directed by the super-power nations who dictate what we should and should not do.

Before Rawlings gate-crashed into the national scene in 1979, Ghana, even though there were economic challenges, had Ghanaian owned businesses growing and spreading over to parts of Africa, making them multinational companies.

In his jealousy and envy, he confiscated these industries and businesses, nationalised them, and after collapsing them, he handed them over to Western owned companies.

In his desire to bring down every business owned by Ghanaians, he first banned Ghanaian businesses and services, gave very lax terms of service to foreign-owned companies while saddled Ghanaian counterparts with higher taxes and very unattractive terms.

He then collapsed the Asutsuare and Komenda sugar factories. Then he signed us into binding international trade agreements, which among many things demanded us not to subsidized agriculture.

In other binding trade agreements, Rawlings opened up the way for the importation of food products we earlier produced here, namely chicken, sugar and rice.

And with rice, when the Kufuor administration took over government, his dedicated agriculture minister, Courage Quarshigah, went out of his way to openly promote local rice and sought to make sure that our rice farmers had all they needed to make rice production easier and attractive for them.

The NDC “owned” television station, TV 3, came out with a documentary during prime-time to campaign against local rice.

Today, our poultry industry which was internationally acclaimed during the seventies, is now almost extinct. In place, chemically induced poultry meat which have been stored for years and with little nutritional value, are been loaded on us. Rice imported into Ghana taste like chaff compared to rice sold abroad.

As it is today, Ghana spends over $200 million a year on wheat importation; over $300 million on poultry; almost $400 million on rice, over $150 million on fish and almost $250 million on sugar. A cool $1.3 billion to import commodities we could produce here and even have better substitutes.

With this government’s great drive to promote food production, especially in Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), it is very ridiculous that the opposition sees nothing good here.

Unnecessary attacks and criticisms labelling the policy as a failure, without coming out with better alternatives, the NDC took the path it knows best, by convincing Ghanaians that anything NPP is nothing good.

Meanwhile an ex-NDC MP who took advantage of the PFJ is all over giving good testimonies. The NDC had severally warned him to just shut up.

Today, in these economic challenging times for the first time, food is available, however it is expensive because down the delivery chain, transportation cost and selfish desires of middlemen to make hay while the sun of economic crunch shines, price of food item could increase twenty-fold in the market.

What lessons are we to learn here? Given that God who put us on this side of the globe, provided for all we will need for ourselves. Colonialisation introduced strange foods and drugs to us and we seem stuck to them, ignoring what is traditionally available here.

We just cannot throw away what has always been here and very available to us. In my opinion, we should immediately embark on the Ethiopia Way. This Eastern African nation, on the back of the Ukraine crisis, has started wheat production on such a large scale that within a few years it can export the commodity to African countries.

Our move should include fully implementing the gazetted zoning of the country which clearly maps out areas for food production. And then, government must take a look at the land turner system and invite land owners to the table and get them to lease out their lands for food production.

With no way of going round the binding agreement of not subsidising food production, government could encourage banks and other businesses to subsidise food production for an attractive cut in taxes and other obligations.

The food production must be made very attractive to the youth so that most of them will go into it and enjoy what they do.

It must be added here that food producers must not take their produce to the market but rather have it taken at the farmgate.

Lastly, since we have Friday wear, Ghana must institute two days out of the week where only Ghanaian dishes would be served in all eateries across the country.

Government must endeavour to make sure that only Ghanaian dishes are served during state functions, and to top this, GhanaWeek must be instituted to last the first seven days of March to coincide with our Independence Day celebrations.

During this period only Ghanaian foods must be served publicly and by the way, not forgetting the proverbial Ghana Wear.

2023 Election Campaign: Fears over bandits, unknown gunmen threats

Unlike previous election years, the 2023 election campaign may be marred by the activities of the bloodthirsty bandits and unknown gunmen who have been unleashing terror on unsuspecting citizens of the country.

DAILY POST recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had slated September 28 for the commencement of the 2023 election campaign.

The security crisis rocking the entire nation may, however, mar the campaign activities in several States, particularly the Northern and Southeastern parts of the country.

While the Boko Haram insurgents and the Islamic State of the West African Province, ISWAP fighters continue to wreak havoc in the North, the daredevil unknown gunmen still remain a big threat to peaceful gathering in the Southeast.

DAILY POST recalls that amid declaration by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, that there would be no elections in the Southeast over their agitation for secession, several government facilities belonging to the electoral body had been attacked and destroyed by the unknown gunmen. However, the IPOB continue to dissociate themselves from the activities of the unknown gunmen.

According to INEC, in the past two years, about 41 offices of the commission have been attacked with several properties destroyed across Nigeria by armed non-State actors.

The attacks, according to the data recently published by the commission, occurred in 14 States between February 2019 and May 2021.

Southeast, especially Imo State topped the log with the most attacks during the period under review.

“These are attacks as a result of election-related violence, protests unrelated to elections and activities of thugs and unknown gunmen,” INEC chairman, Mahmud Yakubu said.

Similarly, terrorist groups, including armed bandits had threatened a showdown with politicians as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections.

2023: Don’t vote for killers; Jonathan warns Nigerians

Former President Goodluck Jonathan

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has warned Nigerians not to vote for those he described as “killers” during the 2023 election.

Jonathan stated this on Sunday in Uyo during a special interdenominational service to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the creation of Akwa Ibom State.

“In 2023, you must not make the mistake to vote killers.

“Those who will carry knives, guns, and all kinds of gadgets to go and kill people because of politics, are the enemies of society.

“If you kill to become a leader, you will continue to kill to remain a leader.

“The people will continue to suffer. Make sure that from the House of Assembly to the House of Representatives to Senate to governor, you vote for the right people in Akwa Ibom State,” Jonathan said.

Corruption has dwarfed growth in Africa; President Buhari

0
President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in New York lamented that corruption has dwarfed growth in Africa and tainted nations within the continent.

The   President posited that Africa remains at the far end of the development index and that the concerted efforts made in the last few years need to be sustained, and deepened by good governance and accountability that are guided by the rule of law.

Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, urged African leaders to fight tirelessly to get rid of corruption, lamenting that the continent has remained at the far end of the global development index because of its menace.

The President spoke in his capacity as the African Union Champion on efforts to eliminate corruption in the continent at a High-Level side event on ‘’Food Security Response: Combating Illicit Financial Flows and Securing Asset Returns for Sustainable Development’‘, on the margins of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Providing his perspectives on the effects of corruption in the continent and the way forward at the event co-hosted by the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigerian leader said he was honoured to serve as AU Champion on anti-corruption since 2018:

‘’As you are all aware, this will be my last official participation at the United Nations General Assembly as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

‘’I remain honoured and privileged to be President of Nigeria for two terms and I am grateful to the African Union for making me the Continental Organisation’s Champion on efforts to eliminate corruption nationally and continent-wide.

‘’Over the years, we came to the painful realisation on how deeply embedded corruption has become in our countries and continent, as well as how corrosive it can be.

‘’Corruption has dwarfed our growth and tainted our nations and continent. Africa remains at the far end of the development index and concerted efforts made in the last few years need to be sustained, and deepened by good governance and accountability that are guided by the rule of law.

‘’I have strong faith that Africa and our national governments can do this with strong resolve and commitment to eliminating Illicit Financial Flows”.

Mark Okraku-Mantey encourages more collaboration between Ghana, Nigeria musicians

0
Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture

Mr. Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture has charged Ghanaian and Nigerian musicians to collaborate more. In an earlier conversation he had with HitzFm’s Doreen Avio, Mr.Okraku-Mantey described the presumed rivalry between the two industries as “behind the times.”

Further, Mr.Okraku-Mantey also described the relationship between Ghana and Nigerian music as one that has to be protected.

“I hear this conversation on Ghana and Nigeria. Are we not tired of asking the same question for far too long? The truth is that the thing between Ghana and Nigeria is outmoded.

“We are supposed to talk about how our collaborations can us forward and not the competition between Ghana and Nigeria.”

He also mentioned the African Continental Free Trade Area initiative that was signed in 2018.

“We have signed a treaty called the African continental free trade area which means that Africans are supposed to work together. Now we are even breaking the boundaries of the countries. 55 countries signed this treaty and Ghana signed first.”

The heat should focus on healthy competition which will refuel positive energies to breaking the international music market.

“I think I am here to make that conversation rest. Let’s begin to think of how to do more things together to compete against other parts of the world.”

The long conversation about these two industries on who does it best has to be buried, rather he holds the opinion that all that banter should be channeled into collaborations to project Africa togetherness.

New nuclear threats raise risk from a ‘cornered Putin’: Experts

0
A Ukrainian fighter stands on the top of a tank in Kharkiv

Even before Russian troops invaded Ukraine, U.S. officials warned global peace would be endangered if Russian President Vladimir Putin were allowed to brazenly seize another sovereign country.

Vladimir Putin

At the same time, analysts have warned that if he faced no option but defeat in that bid, the outcome could prove to be even more dangerous — a so-called “cornered Putin.”

Ukrainian successes on the battlefield have not only pushed Russian troops back but now have pushed Putin further into a corner — forcing him to take a series of dramatic steps to reinvigorate his brutal campaign: a sweeping military draft, labeled as a “partial mobilization,” to surge thousands of soldiers to the fight, and orchestrating what the West has called “sham” referenda in occupied territories in Ukraine — intended to pave the way for them to be “annexed” — considered, in Putin’s view, to be part of Russia.

Most alarming, in a rare televised address, Putin also issued a new round of thinly-veiled nuclear threats — warning that Russia will use “all available means” to protect what he now portrays as Russian people and territory.

While some of his rhetoric isn’t new, the changed circumstances in the conflict are. ABC News spoke to experts and former U.S. officials about why Putin’s latest saber-rattling escalates risks — for both Putin and the world.

Losing the home crowd

Putin’s “partial mobilization” to send Russians who have gone through military training to serve in Ukraine is broadly seen as a tacit acknowledgement that his military is failing to accomplish Moscow’s goals in Ukraine.

But Max Bergmann, a former State Department official and the director of the Europe Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says it also puts Putin’s control over his own country in question.

“What is clearly happening here is that the Russian military position in Ukraine is collapsing,” he said. “Forcing people to go and fight in Ukraine is an extremely risky political decision. This is one of the most incredibly disruptive things that can be done to a society.”

Although economic penalties for the invasion continue to have a mounting impact, Bergmann says the move will bring the war home to many Russians for the first time. And what’s worse, he adds, is that Putin hasn’t even officially called his invasion of Ukraine a war — still describing it as a “special military operation.”

“There’s a total disconnect between the Russian government messaging that this is just some sort of tactical military effort in Ukraine, versus the need to suddenly rip men that have maybe at one time in their life served in the military for a year away from their families — many with children — and from their jobs, off to a battlefield where tens of thousands of people are dying,” he said.

Despite the Kremlin’s efforts to silence protest, Bergmann says if enough discontent builds, Putin risks losing public support, and with it, his grasp on power.

“He is gambling his entire regime over Ukraine,” he said.

A powerful tool in Putin’s arsenal is the state propaganda machine, but Bergmann believes Putin still has a steep hill to climb in portraying the war as defending the motherland.

“Putin hopes he can harken back to Russia’s past of repelling invaders, whether it’s Napoleon’s army or Hitler’s. But then, Russia was being invaded. It was an existential war. This is a war of imperial ambition,” he said. “He’s going to have to work incredibly hard to convince the Russian public that it’s worth it to lose their husbands, fathers and sons in an oblast in Ukraine.”

While the Russian president still appears to wield uncompromising control, Bergmann warns the tide can shift quickly.

“Autocratic regimes look incredibly stable until they’re not,” he said.

Buying time

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his speech this week to the United Nations General Assembly, warned Moscow was trying to wait his fighters out.

“Russia wants to spend the winter on the occupied territory of Ukraine and prepare forces to attempt a new offensive,” he said in a recorded address.

Analysts also say buying time to move newly conscripted troops to the front might be the motivator behind other elements of Putin’s strategy.

“Those troops will take a while to get to the battlefield,” said John Hardie, deputy director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Russia Program. “It’s definitely a game on his part.”

Putin’s latest efforts towards annexation, coupled with promises to defend its land, are likely aimed at giving Ukraine second thoughts about pursuing its counteroffensive — and giving the West second thoughts about supporting it, Hardie and Bergmann said. But they say it’s unlikely to prove effective.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Final Resting Place Marked with New Ledger Stone

0
The final resting place for the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II‘s final resting place at the King George VI Memorial Chapel has been marked with a new ledger stone, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

The stone is made of Belgian black marble with brass letter inlays to match the previous ledger, and it now sits within St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. The ledger stone now includes the dates of birth and death for George VI, Elizabeth, Elizabeth II, and her husband Philip, who died at age 99 in April 2021.

The memorial chapel was commissioned by Her Majesty in 1962 following the 1952 death of her father, King George VI, and its construction was completed seven years later after being designed by George Pace. The ashes of Her Majesty’s sister, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, are also in the chapel.

St. George’s was the location of Queen Elizabeth’s Committal Service on Monday, and the service was attended by family, friends and close staff following the state funeral at London’s Westminster Abbey. It was the first time a monarch’s committal service was seen by the public.

In attendance were the Queen’s four children, King Charles IIIPrincess AnnePrince Andrew and Prince Edward, who followed the Queen’s coffin as it was carried into the church. Prince WilliamPrince Harry, the Queen’s nephew, David Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, and her cousin, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, were not far behind as it marked the final funerary event Monday.

On Tuesday, nearly two weeks after the longest reigning British monarch died on Sept. 8, the United Kingdom ended its official period of mourning. Flags on British government buildings returned to flying at full mast following Monday’s services, however, the royal family’s official period of mourning ends seven days after the funeral.

After the funeral services, the Palace shared on social media that Queen Elizabeth would receive a private burial at the memorial chapel.

“This evening a Private Burial will take place in The King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor. The Queen will be Laid to Rest with her late husband The Duke of Edinburgh, alongside her father King George VI, mother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and sister Princess Margaret,” the palace wrote.

Following her services, Buckingham Palace changed their royal reference to the monarch from “Her Majesty the Queen” to “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.” This was explained by Gert’s Royals, who shared that the “The” in Queen Elizabeth’s title had represented the “current title holder.”
