Mr Oppong (L) presenting coconut seedling to a farmer

The agricultural policies, programs and interventions of the government are meant to ensure food security and enhanced the incomes of farmers, Mr. Francis Kwadwo Oppong, Dormaa West District Chief Executive (DCE), has indicated.

Mr. Oppong reiterated to practicalise and actualise its plans of ameliorating the socio-economic conditions of the citizens, the government had introduced a number of initiatives such as the Planting for Food and Jobs (PfFJ), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), and Rearing for Food and Jobs (RfFJ) being implemented

He cited “one coconut seedling now costs GH¢10.00”, saying “if a farmer receives 100 seedlings free, the government is enabling him/her to be making profit and more money out of GH¢1000.00 in a short time”.

Mr. Oppong was speaking at a short presentation ceremony of 7,000 coconut seedlings to some beneficiary farmers in the District at Nkrankwanta, in fulfillment of the government’s pledge under the PERD’s program to improve their livelihoods.

He advised the farmers to use the seedlings for its intended purpose, adding “the Assembly will liaise with the District Directorate of Agriculture to monitor the progress of their activities in their farms”.

Mr. Paul Avah, the District Director of Agriculture expressed the government’s determination to enhance the agriculture sector through distribution of seedlings to farmers in the district and across the country.

He advised farmers not only to engage in cocoa cultivation but must diversify their production base to include the cultivation of tree crops.

Mr. Avah entreated the farmers to take proper care of the seedlings to enable them to achieve positive results.

Cash crop farmers in the district had previously benefited from the distribution of 5,000 oil palm seedlings and 8,000 coffee seedlings from the Assembly.

Cardiovascular diseases kill 18.6m annually -Report

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, are said to be accountable for nearly half of all Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) deaths, according to a report. Dr. Robert Yeboah, Senior Technical Advisor, Non-Communicable Disease, PATH Ghana, an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has said cardiovascular disease was the world’s leading cause of death, claiming 18.6 million lives each year.

He also stressed that Hypertension was a silent killer associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. These disclosures were made at a Health Screening Programme organised by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) with support from PATH Ghana at the Sofoline Lorry Terminal, as part of activities to mark World Heart Day. It was themed:

“Use Heart for every Heart.”

The day is observed to increase awareness on cardiovascular health and presents an opportunity to unite in the fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden.

It also offers another opportunity to heighten awareness on hypertension and other related cardiovascular conditions, and to accelerate efforts at prevention, screening, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to reduce mortality from its complications.

Dr. Yeboah reminded the general public on the need for concerted action to ensure that people know that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, at least, 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.

He underscored that, as the implementing partner for the Healthy Heart Africa (HHA) programme in Ghana, PATH was collaborating with the Ghana Health Service to improve health outcomes for people living with hypertension, many of whom were unaware of their status.

Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), explained that, the heart was the muscle at the centre of the circulation system, pumping blood around the body as it beats.

He indicated the heart is the only organ one can hear and feel, and is the first and last sign of life as oxygen and nutrients are sent to all parts of the body through the blood and carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products.

He indicated that, some of the ways to reduce risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) include eating healthy balanced diet, be physically active, keep to healthy weight, give up smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, enough sleep and keeping ones blood pressure

under control by checking frequently and early reporting of illness at health facilities.

ECG – Digitisation without Commonsense – Who Cares?

0
Customers queuing to buy ECG power credit

The story is told of an Arabian King who visited the West. He was so fascinated with the goodies thereof – water and light at the tap of a button among others.

Prior to his departure, he bought all the necessary gadgets (sockets, plugs, tap etc) apparently to fix same in his home country and enjoy associated benefits thereof.

He realized the “actuals” when the gadgets failed to deliver – certainly, there was more to it.

This is the “quagmire” ECG finds and has placed itself in.

Yah, its much touted digitalisation of operation ‘DID NOT ATTACH COMMONSENSE.’

Even rats, have thought us to make room for contingencies by creating several exits points, should…

ECG just embarked on its wholesale digitalization of its metering system without factoring into the vocabulary, the word CONTINGENT – WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A SYSTEM FAILURE?

Since Tuesday, I have been without electricity and I am not in the equation alone.

In fact, hundreds, if not thousands of customers have not, not because E -levy has scooped their salaries, but because ECG has simply failed to think outside the box.

A post of theirs dated September 28, 2022 sought to appeal and assure the general public of addressing the issue – One Hundred & Twenty  (120) uninterrupted  hours thereafter, the equation holds – NO ELECTRICITY.

I tell you, dear brethrens and sisters, Ghana Sweet, aka, NOTHING WILL HAPPEN, AND NO ONE WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, after all, it’s God who gives and takes, aka, FAMA NYAME.

Listening to their Head of Corporate Services or whatever on Umara Sanda’s Citi FM Eye Witness last Friday, there was every indication that ECG cared not.

To make matters worse, it seems they have not realized the need to work around the clock to serve customers from their District offices where THEY ALLEGE, the system was operational, but have chosen to go by the status quo of their normal working hours of 9am to 4pm- if it were their Fathers job, would they have adopted this lackadaisical attitude?

And that too, there was NO SHOW as my boy said Good bye to them around 2pm at their District Office at Kwabenya, sandwiched between Atomic Energy and Adwoa Safo’s FSHS after reporting at the said facility as early as 5am yesterday – WHO CARES EVEN IF YOU SLEPT THERE?

It’s time the authorities revisit this digitalisation or whatever concept. It’s a good novelty, but we must tread cautiously in its implementation by making concrete provisions should the system face any challenges or hacked as they have chosen to brand their incompetency, actions, inactions and plain – ‘I don’t careism.’

I am yet to hear from the loud mouthed Energy Minister and his deputies thereon.

No wonder the Bureau of National Security (NIB) and its sister organization, National Security see no security threat in this – THEY ARE IN FACT SLEEPING ON THE JOB, WHO CARES AND WATCHES THE WATCHMAN?

Recall years back, a Kumasi based Business man, the late P.K. Boateng, had cause to drag ECG to court for their failure to provide him with electricity, which culminated in his essential drugs going waste, BUT WHO CARES?, after all, no one within and or outside ECG will be hauled before anyone to answer any questions, aka, IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL –

No lessons learnt?

Ukraine declares full control of Lyman after Russian forces pull out

Ukrainian troops pose for a photo after they seized back control of Lyman

Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed Ukraine has “fully cleared” Russian forces from the key eastern city of Lyman, a day after Moscow admitted its troops had pulled out after they were encircled.

In a short video clip on his Telegram channel, Zelenskiy thanked serving Ukrainian troops for liberating Lyman. “As of 1230 [Kyiv] local time Lyman is completely cleared,” he said, adding: “Glory to Ukraine.”

Earlier the Ukrainian president said his army would continue its offensive in the south and east and would “return back” all of the territory occupied by Russia, including Crimea. He suggested Russian generals were now “biting each other” after a series of embarrassing setbacks.

Their loss of Lyman four months after Russian servicemen seized the city in the Donetsk oblast amounts to a humiliating moment for Vladimir Putin. On Friday, in a move rejected by the international community, he annexed Donetsk together with three other Ukrainian regions, and said they were a part of Russia “for ever”.

Poland demands nearly $1.3t in World War II damages from Germany

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau has signed a diplomatic note to Germany concerning reparations for World War II, formalising Poland’s demand for compensation before a visit by Berlin’s top diplomat.

Monday’s move comes after Poland’s ruling nationalists last month estimated Germany owed the country 6.2 trillion zlotys ($1.26 trillion). Germany, Poland’s biggest trade partner, has said all financial claims linked to the war had been settled.

“[The note] expresses the position of the Polish minister of foreign affairs that the parties should take immediate steps to permanently and effectively … settle the issue of the consequences of aggression and German occupation,” Rau told a news conference.

Lukasz Jasina, Poland’s foreign ministry spokesman, told reporters that Rau would raise the issue with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock during her visit to Warsaw on Tuesday.

About six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Armenia, Azerbaijan top diplomats hold peace talks in Geneva

Mirzoyan (2nd R) and Bayramov (2nd L) and their respective delegations meet in Geneva

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan have held talks in Geneva on a future peace treaty, according to officials in Baku and Yerevan, following recent deadly clashes between the arch-foes.

Last month, at least 286 people were killed on both sides before a United States-brokered truce ended the worst clashes since the Caucasus neighbours’ 2020 war.

Baku and Yerevan fought two wars – in 2020 and in the 1990s – over the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan.

Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov met on Sunday in Geneva to begin “drafting the text of the peace treaty”, the foreign ministry in Baku said on Monday.

It said the talks followed up the EU-mediated meeting on August 31 in Brussels between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Azerbaijan called for “full withdrawal of the Armenian armed units from the territories of Azerbaijan, the opening of transport and communication lines”, the ministry said in a statement.

Brazil’s Lula and Bolsonaro face run-off after tight result

0
Brazil's Lula and Bolsonaro in tight race

Brazil’s election is going into a second round in which left-winger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will face far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. With almost all the votes counted, Lula had won 48% against Bolsonaro’s 43% – a much closer result than opinion polls had suggested.

But Lula fell short of the more than 50% of valid votes needed to prevent a run-off.

Voters now have four weeks to decide which of the two should lead Brazil.

Winning outright in the first round was always going to be a tall order for any candidate – the last time it happened was 24 years ago.

But President Bolsonaro and Lula had given their supporters hope that they could achieve just that. For Lula, who could not run in the 2018 election because he was in prison after being convicted on corruption charges which were later annulled – this spells a remarkable comeback.

Chechen leader vows to send teenage sons to fight with Russian forces

Ramzan Kadyrov says it is time his teenage sons experience a real battle

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov says his three sons, aged 14, 15 and 16, will soon travel to the Ukraine front line to fight with Russian forces. Kadyrov is a strong ally of Vladimir Putin, although has recently criticised Russian military leadership.

On social media, he wrote that a father should teach his sons how to protect their family, people and fatherland.

Russia has signed a UN treaty aimed at preventing children under the age of 18 from taking direct part in hostilities.

Using children under the age of 15 to participate in hostilities is considered a war crime by the International Criminal Court. However Russia does not recognise its jurisdiction.

In a long post on the Telegram messaging app, Kadyrov said his sons’ military training began when they were much younger, and the time had come for them to experience a real battle.

He also took aim at those “empty-worded” people who claimed the Chechen leader’s loved-ones were not taking part in the military operation in Ukraine.

The post was accompanied by a slickly-produced video of his sons firing various weapons at a training ground.

Iran protests: Supreme leader blames unrest on US and Israel

0
Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran’s supreme leader has blamed the US and Israel for the anti-government protests sweeping the country, in his first public comments on the unrest. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said “riots” had been “engineered” by Iran’s arch-enemies and their allies, and alleged that Qurans had been burned. He also called on security forces to be ready to deal with further unrest.

The protests – the biggest challenge to his rule for a decade – were sparked by the death in custody of a woman.

Mahsa Amini, 22, fell into a coma hours after being detained by morality police on 13 September in Tehran for allegedly breaking the strict law requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf. She died three days later.

Her family has alleged that officers beat her head with a baton and banged her head against one of their vehicles. The police have said there is no evidence of any mistreatment and that she suffered “sudden heart failure”. Addressing a graduation ceremony of police and armed forces cadets on Monday, the supreme leader said Ms Amini’s death “broke our hearts”.

“But what is not normal is that some people have made the streets dangerous, burned the Quran, removed hijabs from veiled women and set fire to mosques and cars.”
