The Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, has advised workers in the informal sector to get registered under the SSNIT pension scheme, stressing that all workers, irrespective of the nature of work they do, would definitely go on retirement one day.

Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang explained that SSNIT, the only state pension institution, was to serve all manner of workers, and that the impression that it only served public sector workers was wrong, and called on self-employed people such as hairdressers, carpenters, masons and dressmakers, to register under SSNIT to guarantee a brighter future when they grow old.

The Director General, who was speaking at the launch of the National SSNIT Mobile Service Week at the Volta Regional capital, Ho, explained that the national launch of the Mobile Service Week in the Volta Region formed part of a comprehensive educational activity of his outfit to make retirement life for all Ghanaians more comfortable.

Dr. Tenkorang said SSNIT was the only pension scheme that did not discriminate against workers, and embraced all Ghanaians engaged in any economic activity and had been able to provide decent retirements for workers over the years.

He contended that SSNIT had been able to reduce poverty among the aged on retirement, thereby increasing their lifespan.

He observed that self-employed workers in the country constituted the largest working population, and that the SSNIT Mobile Service being offered would include the issuance of statement of accounts of registered members, registration of employers and workers, processing of benefits initiation, renewal of pension certificates, merging of SSNIT and National Identification Authority (NIA) numbers, and general enquiries among others.

Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang noted that the theme for the national launch, “You also Deserve a Pension; Join SSNIT Today,” was apt and the campaign would end on Friday, October 7, 2022, and urged all workers to take advantage of the opportunity, and be registered to enable them enjoy a decent pension scheme under SSNIT.

He announced that a total of 69 vantage points were available in the 16 regions to provide services to members and clients to enable them access the services of the Trust without difficulties, saying, the 69 service centres across the country would enable members and clients to initiate registration onto the Scheme, view nominee list, check member information, initiate and track benefits applications among others.

The Director General also disclosed that starting from October 10, 2022 pensioners would be able to renew their pension certificates and view pension payment advice, using mobile money, which would not attract E-levy, and by the close of the year 2022, SSNIT APP would be fully in operation.

According to Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang, SSNIT had an active membership of over 1.7 million in September 2022. The Trust also paid a total of GH¢281.07 million to 230,831 pensioners and the highest pension earner received GH¢142,564.97 per month, while the lowest earning pensioner gets GH¢300.00.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, lauded the efforts SSNIT have been making to educate the public particularly the informal sector to be registered under the Scheme, which he described as the best practices to reduce poverty among the aged who retired in the informal sector.

The Paramount Chief of Kpenoe Traditional area, Togbe Kotoku XI, who chaired the programme, also commended SSNIT for making the necessary efforts to ensure that all Ghanaians, who were engaged in any kind of economic activity, had been registered under the state insurance scheme.

Togbe Kotoku, therefore, asked workers in the informal sector to take advantage of the SSNIT pension Scheme, to enable them to live decent lives after retirement, which he said, protected the beneficiaries and their families during the period of retirement.

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its over seven-month industrial and return to the classrooms.

“I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available.

“This administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years.

“The Federal Government will continue to mobilize resources both internationally and nationally towards funding education to ensure that our citizens are well educated and skilled in various vocations in view of the fact that education is a leading determinant of economic growth and employment generation,” Buhari said in his 2022 Independence Day address on Saturday.

The President also shared the pains of Nigerians and assured them that his administration would do all possible to alleviate the situation.

“I share the pains Nigerians are going through and I assure you that your resilience and patience would not be in vain as this administration continues to reposition as well as strengthen the security agencies to enable them to deal with all forms of security challenges,” the President said.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022 over contending issues including unpaid allowances and poor welfare of lecturers of public universities.

Nigeria to award flared gas contracts by end of 2022

Petroleum Minister Timipre Sylva

Nigeria will award contracts for its flared gas by the end of December under an accelerated programme to harness gas that is released as a byproduct of oil production, its petroleum regulator has said.

President Muhammadu Buhari first launched the programme to auction rights to capture and sell flared gas in 2016. Four years later, the government approved 200 bidders but the process was stalled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Sunday, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission chief executive Gbenga Komolafe said the auction was being restarted and would be open to previous applicants and new bidders.

“The auction process has been streamlined to enable an accelerated delivery schedule for this exercise with the announcement of winners planned for December 2022,” Komolafe said in a statement.

The government has said flaring costs it roughly $1bn a year in lost revenue. The gas can be used in power plants, in industry or exported.

Last month, Petroleum Minister Timipre Sylva said Nigeria’s plan to commercialise gas burned from its oilfields was at an advanced stage and would help cut 15 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

Nigeria, which has Africa’s largest gas reserves of more than 190 trillion cubic feet, first targeted gas flaring in the late 1970s and, through various schemes and regulations, has more than halved it since 2001.

Questions raised as hundreds win jackpot in Philippine lottery

One winner posing with a cheque

A lottery in the Philippines that saw 433 people hit the jackpot has drawn surprise and triggered scrutiny. It was the highest number of people to have ever won the Grand Lotto’s top prize, according to local media.

The winning combination for last weekend’s 236m peso ($4m; £3.5m) jackpot was a series of numbers which were all multiples of nine.

Philippines senate minority leader Koko Pimentel has called for an inquiry into the “suspicious” results.

Participants in the Grand Lotto select six numbers from one to 55. To win the jackpot, all six of a player’s numbers have to match those drawn by the lottery’s operator.

“These lotto games are authorised by the Republic of the Philippines. Therefore, we need to maintain and protect the integrity of these gambling games,” Mr Pimentel said as he called for an investigation into the lottery’s unusual outcome.

Iran schoolgirls remove hijabs in protests against govt

School girls remove hijabs

In an unprecedented move, schoolgirls have joined the protests that have swept Iran since the death of a woman detained for breaking the hijab law.

Videos verified by the BBC show teenage students in uniforms waving their headscarves in the air while shouting slogans against clerical authorities.

The chants echoed those heard at the wider protests over the past two weeks.

In Karaj on Monday, hijab-less girls were filmed forcing a man thought to be a local official out of their school.

The footage shows them shouting “shame on you” and throwing what appear to be empty water bottles at the man until he retreats through a gate.

In another video from Karaj, which is just to the west of the capital Tehran, students are heard shouting: “If we don’t unite, they will kill us one by one.”

In the southern city of Shiraz on Monday, dozens of schoolgirls blocked traffic on a main road while waving their headscarves in the air and shouting “death to the dictator” – a reference to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters. Credit: bbc.com

North Korea fires ballistic missile over Japan

North Korea fires ballistic missile

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile over Japan, in what appears to be a deliberate escalation to get the attention of Tokyo and Washington. The missile travelled 4,500km (2,800 miles) before falling into the Pacific Ocean – far enough to hit the US island of Guam if it took another trajectory. It is the first North Korean missile launch over Japan since 2017.

Japan issued an alert to some citizens to take cover. The US and South Korea responded with joint bombing drills. The South Korean joint chiefs of staff said four aircraft from each side had taken part in the exercise, firing at a mock target on an uninhabited island in the Yellow Sea. A statement said the drill demonstrated Seoul and Washington’s will to respond sternly to the threat from Pyongyang.

The UN prohibits North Korea from testing ballistic and nuclear weapons. Flying missiles towards or over other countries without any pre-warning or consultation also contravenes international norms.

Most countries avoid doing it completely as it can easily be mistaken for an attack. While it is not as big as a nuclear test – which could be next – it can be considered hugely provocative.  Credit: bbc.com
