Honey and Diabetes: Is It Safe?

0
Honey

Some people add honey to their coffee and tea or use it as a sweetener when baking. But is honey safe for people with diabetes? The short answer is yes, but only under certain conditions.

People living with diabetes have to control and manage their carbohydrate and sugar intake. This doesn’t mean they have to avoid sweets altogether.

In moderation, honey isn’t only safe, but it has anti-inflammatory properties that might also reduce diabetes complications.

What is honey?

Honey is a thick, golden-colored liquid produced by honeybees and other insects, like some bumblebees and wasps.

It comes from the nectar within flowers, which bees collect and store in their stomachs until back at the hive.

Nectar is made up of sucrose (sugar), water, and other substances. It’s roughly 80 percent carbohydrate and 20 percent water. Bees produce honey by ingesting and regurgitating the nectar over and over again. This process removes the water.

Afterward, bees store the honey in honeycombs to be used as an energy source during the winter when it’s harder to find food.

Although it’s a natural sweetener, honey has a bit more carbohydrates and calories per teaspoon than table sugar.

According to the United States Department of AgricultureTrusted Source, 1 tablespoon of raw honey has about 60 calories and 17 grams of carbohydrates.

Honey also contains many vitamins and minerals, including iron, vitamin C, folate, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It’s also an antioxidant, which are substances that prevent and slow cell damage.

Honey can be raw or processed

Raw honey is also known as unfiltered honey. This honey is extracted from a beehive and then strained to remove impurities.

Processed honey, on the other hand, undergoes a filtration process. It’s also pasteurized (exposed to high heat) to destroy yeast and create a longer shelf life.

Processed honey is smoother, but the filtration and pasteurizing process does remove some of its nutrients and antioxidants.

There are about 300 different types of honey in the United States. These types are determined by the source of the nectar, or more simply, what the bees eat.

For example, blueberry honey is retrieved from the flowers of the blueberry bush, whereas avocado honey comes from avocado blossoms.

The source of the nectar affects the taste of the honey and its color.

How does honey affect blood sugar?

Because honey is a natural sugar and a carbohydrate, it’s only natural for it to affect your blood sugar in some way. When compared to table sugar, however, it appears that honey has a smaller effect.

A 2004 study evaluated the effects of honey and table sugar on blood sugar levels. This study involved individuals with and without type 1 diabetes.

Researchers found that in the group of people with diabetes, honey caused an initial increase in blood sugar 30 minutes after consumption. However, participant’s blood sugar levels later decreased and remained at lower levels for two hours.

This leads researchers to believe that honey, unlike table sugar, may cause an increase in insulin, which is an important hormone for controlling blood sugar. More research is needed.

Can honey prevent diabetes?

Even though honey may increase insulin levels and help people with diabetes control their blood sugar, there doesn’t appear to be any conclusive research supporting honey as a preventive factor for diabetes. This might be plausible, however.

Researchers have found a possible connection between honey and a lower glycemic index.

In a study of 50 people with type 1 diabetes and 30 people without type 1 diabetes, researchers found that, compared to sugar, honey had a lower glycemic effect on all participants.

It also raised their levels of C-peptide, a substance released into the bloodstream when the body produces insulin.

A normal level of C-peptide means the body is making sufficient insulin. More studies are needed to determine whether honey can be used for the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Are there risks to eating honey if you have diabetes?

Keep in mind that honey is sweeter than sugar. If you substitute honey for sugar, you only need a little.

Because honey can affect blood sugar, avoid it and other sweeteners until your diabetes is under control.

Honey should be consumed in moderation. Speak with your healthcare provider before using it as an added sweetener.

If your diabetes is well-controlled and you want to add honey to your diet, choose pure, organic, or raw natural honey. These types are safer for people with diabetes because all-natural honey doesn’t have any added sugar.

However, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems shouldn’t consume raw honey, as it’s not pasteurized.

If you purchase processed honey from a grocery store, it may also contain sugar or syrup. The added sweetener can affect your blood sugar differently.

Love For Nkrumah by The Great Hypocrites (2)

Kwabena Amikaketo sat in his favourite chair on his balcony, viewing the setting sun which was making way for the shadows to grow longer and soon cover his part of the world like some dark blanket.

The chilly weather is now gradually abating, making way for the warm spells before the heat arrived.

Today, like yesterday, Kwabena was very indignant about what he had now accepted as evil plots by socialists in Ghana to re-write history and achieve their long-cherished dream that Kwame Nkrumah was the only one who decided that our country must gain independence and he single handily made sure of that

This nonsense must stop, because Kwame Nkrumah himself once said that there were people before him in the struggle for independence.

Before, he continued from where he left off last night, Kwabena decided to deal with some serious nonsense and gross stupidity coming out from the socialist’ camp and that was the matter concerning founder(s) and the Big Six.

What at all was KKD lamenting about on television the other day? And has he got the moral nerves to come out in public after that sex scandal he was accused of and never really proved his innocence?

As for KKD, someone who now holds himself as a traditional leader, if what Kwabena heard was true that he sexually abused a lady, to now come out and talk and propagate lies he heard from Kwesi Pratt Jr, should be a big shame to him. He should not exhibit his ignorance if he wants to maintain the decency and respect that is left in him.

Socialists in Ghana are becoming so pathological liars who have upped their game of propagating the untruth to make it sound like the truth.

One such character, who has no standing even in his own political party, but has always been going the NDC way, claiming to represent his PNC, while all of his party will go the NPP way, is Bernard Mornah.

History of our struggle for independence recorded the arrest and detention of six Ghanaians who were members of the UGCC. Bernard Mornah is saying nothing like that ever happened and that there was nothing like six persons arrested who later became known as the Big Six.

Kwabena understood Bernard’s infantile way of thinking. It was all about the issue of whether there are founders or there is only one founder of the nation.

And because those six gentlemen and politicians, of the UGCC, namely by rank in the party, J.B. Danquah (vice-chairman), Kwame Nkrumah (general secretary), Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, Edward Akufo-Addo and William Ofori-Atta, stood out unchallenged to be called founders, Bernard decided to lie big time to erode off the rest and leave Nkrumah alone, standing.

The colonial government, led by Governor Sir Gerald Creasy had blamed the UGCC for the disturbances leading to and the riots after the killing of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey.

He issued a removal order for the arrest of the leadership of the UGCC after his intelligence informed him that these six gentlemen were those involved in the acts to destabilize the government.

According to Bernard Mornah, Edward Akufo-Addo was not even a member of the UGCC, but had calculatedly invited himself to tea and was there drinking tea, at the tea party, with the UGCC members when the police swoop came and arrested them.

Kwabena wondered the level of education that Bernard had, since such talks are only associated with semi-illiterates. For the sake of narrowing down the founders of this country, oneshould be said to be a gate crasher at tea parties.

Kwabena was so angry and suddenly realised that unlike him, very harsh words were pouring out from his thoughts. If the educated and those who know the truth or can easily find out the truth, are now re-writing history and spewing lies, the impact on the vulnerable would be very sad and pathetic, because irresponsible people only want to re-write history and insist that Ghana has only one founder.

The founders of Ghana are all those who led in the independence struggle from John Mensah Sarbah’s ARPS, with the Asantes as catalysts, through to the UGCC and finally to Nkrumah who led us into independence. After all, one person cannot bring a child into this world.

Kwabena suddenly realised that he was allowing himself to be distracted. The issue tonight was to establish that those Nkrumaists, who are all about the place making noise about Nkrumah and how much they love him, are in fact great hypocrites who inwardly hate the gentleman to the core.

They helped undermined the Limann regime which was the socialist government directly in line from Nkrumah’s CPP. When vote was to be cast in Parliament on Limann’s budget, with his PNP having 71 seats out of the 140 seat House, only 51 showed up and the budget was rejected by 54-51 votes. And in that era, MPs cannot be giving any government appointment, so what kept the rest? Kwabena continued from where he left off, last night.

5). When the ban on partisan politics was lifted again, one would have thought that all the Nkrumaists would have come together and form another formidable party. But that was not to be.

Gallery of socialist parties emerged, with as many as nine different political parties coming up, all in the name of Nkrumah. And shockingly, the National Convention Party, which is the core of today’s CPP and the EGLE party formed an alliance with NDC and the three collectively put-up Rawlings as their flag bearer, the man who openly did not honour Nkrumah and rejected him.

6). In 1993, the People’s Heritage Party merged with the National Independence Party to form the People’s Convention Party which in 1996 merged with the National Convention Party to reform the CPP.

Currently, among the six Nkrumaist parties, there is the CPP and PNC who could be said to be the strongest.

And upon all their noises, collectively, the Nkrumaist parties never made any impact during General Elections. Apart from 1992 and 1996 where they secured 11.32% and 10.30% respectively in the presidential elections, it had been downhill with the 2020 elections results, when they secured0.02%.

In the parliamentary elections, their best was nine seats in 1992 which declined to 2 seats in 2012 and since 2016, the Nkrumaists have no seat in Parliament.Their bulk of support and resources are in the NDC, founded by someone who never believed in Nkrumah.

7). Instead of concentrating on membership drive, the Nkrumaists decided to drive out very important gems like Paa Kwesi Nduom and Samia Nkrumah from their midst. Samia’s case truly demonstrated that Nkrumah was not wanted or loved within the Nkrumaist parties, especiallyin the CPP.

For how can you claim to love the father and cherish him so much that even his name is something sacred and yet you deny his only daughter from leading the party by being a flag bearerand finally drove her away? If anyone is to truly inherit Nkrumah, it should be Samia.

By the way, Kwabena hoped the members of the CPP would realise their party is now dead. Thinking that the name CPP would bring back victories, they resurrected it and were on board in 2000, where they secured only 1.78% of the presidential votes.

Their greatest performance was in 2004 when they secured 4% of presidential votes. Today, they could only secure 0.09% of presidential votes.

Could it be that, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah realising that his party is made up of non-loyal hypocrites and sycophants, placed a curse on them so that they would never perform well in elections?

Most ironically, that these people who hold Nkrumah as the next after God; these people who dared to equate Nkrumah to God when they deceived young minds of the Young Pioneer by making them believe that the sweets that rained on them while they were made to sit under trees, was solely from Nkrumah and that God could not give them sweets and these people who would swear that they will die for Nkrumah have suddenly turned a full semi-circle to support Rawlings, the very man who openly declared that he never believed in Nkrumah.

Kwabena Amikaketo heard steps coming up and with it was the voice of his darling daughter, Echele talking to one of her siblings about something. Kwabena rose and walked to the door as it opened to reveal the sweet smiling face of the lass. They exchanged smiles and he allowed himself to be ushered to his room.

If only the truth would be out, these Nkrumaists will never cease to deceive Ghanaians and bring about conflict into the country.

Araujo poised to miss World Cup after injury with Uruguay

Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo

Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is in danger of missing the World Cup after his club, Barcelona, said on Monday he would undergo surgery on a torn thigh muscle. The centre-back is likely to be sidelined for between two and three months, according to reports in Spain. That would probably rule him out of the tournament in Qatar, which starts on November 20.

The Uruguayan sustained the injury in the first minute of a friendly with his country last week against Iran and has opted for surgery as opposed to more conservative treatment.

Araujo met Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez and the club’s medical staff on Monday to discuss the best course of action.

“The operation will be undertaken by doctor, under the supervision of club medical services, in Turku, Finland,” said Barcelona. “Once the operation is complete a new medical statement will be made.”

Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti made the opposite decision in a similar situation in 2018, and became a world champion with France, but has been hampered since.

The surgery also rules Araujo out of key club games, including the rest of the Champions League group phase and the Clasico on October 16.

Araujo’s injury means he joins Jules Kounde on the sidelines at Camp Nou, after the French centre-back suffered a hamstring injury on international duty.

Barcelona also confirmed on Monday that Dutch duo Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay both had hamstring problems sustained in the Netherlands’ 2-0 win over Poland last week.

John Obi Mikel

Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel announced his retirement after a long and decorated career on Tuesday, saying “all good things must come to an end”.

“I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape,” the 35-year-old posted on his Instagram account.

Among his many achievements was helping Chelsea to their first Champions League title in 2012.

And his former club were quick to pay tribute to the player who joined them “as a fresh-faced 19-year-old”.

In a decade of service, he clocked up 372 appearances in a Chelsea shirt, winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the Europa League and two League Cups.

Maguire gets criticised more than I ever seen -Luke Shaw

Harry Maguire

Luke Shaw says England and Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire receives more criticism than he has “ever seen before in football”.

Centre-back Maguire made mistakes in the build-up to two of Germany’s three goals in England’s 3-3 draw on Monday.

His selection, and place in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up, has been questioned after he was dropped earlier in the season by United.

“Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character,” Shaw told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He’s taken a lot of stick – probably more than I’ve ever seen before in football.

“He never hides away, he’s always there. You can have people who can hide away and not want to be in the spotlight. He keeps putting himself in the spotlight, it shows the strength and character he’s got.

“Everybody knows he’s an unbelievable player. At the moment the confidence might not be there because it could feel like the whole world is against him.

“It’s tough for him, but us as players and staff are all behind him because he’s a very important player. It shows Gareth’s trust because he’s played in both games [this week] – and look at the Euros what he’s done.

“People need to understand he’s a big part of the England team and have to accept it.”

In another early kick-off, African champions Senegal drew 1-1 with fellow World Cup-bound Iran in Austria.

Senegal took the lead after 55 minutes when defender Morteza Pouraliganji struck into his own net from an acute angle after trying to cut out a pass.

The Teranga Lions only held onto the lead for nine minutes before Sardar Azmoun equalised. The Iran forward headed home from a cross by left back Ehsan Hajsafi.

The draw follows a 2-0 win for Senegal over Bolivia at the weekend.

Aliou Cisse’s men will play Netherlands in their opening fixture in Qatar, followed by clashes with the hosts and Ecuador in Group A.

Brazil ease to commanding 5-1 win over 10-man Tunisia

Brazil vs Tunisia

Neymar closed in on Pele’s all-time Brazil goalscoring record as the Selecao eased to a commanding 5-1 win over 10-man Tunisia at the Parc des Princes.

Playing on his home ground at club level, the Paris Saint-Germain forward netted his 75th senior international goal from the penalty spot – moving two shy of equalling the tally of legendary striker Pele.

Raphinha struck twice, while Richarlison and Pedro were also on target as Tite’s side completed their World Cup preparations in emphatic fashion.

Montassar Talbi scored what proved a consolation for Tunisia, who had Dylan Bronn sent off as they suffered their first defeat in eight games.

Brazil led in the 11th minute when Casemiro’s floated ball into the box was met by Raphinha, who sent a looping header beyond the dive of Aymen Dahmen.

Tunisia responded as Talbi nodded in from Anis Ben Slimane’s free-kick, but the Selecao regained the lead less than two minutes later with Richarlison latching onto Raphinha’s neat through ball and drilling through Dahmen’s legs.

Neymar made it 3-1 when he calmly converted from 12 yards after Aissa Laidouni dragged down Casemiro, before Raphinha fired home his second goal of the game from Richarlison’s lay-off.

Tunisia were reduced to 10 men before the break with Bronn shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Neymar.

Antony and Vinicius Junior went close to increasing the advantage in the second half, before Pedro scored Brazil’s fifth 16 minutes from time – the Flamengo forward brilliantly volleying in his first international goal.

Casemiro and Thiago Silva each almost made it six, but the Selecao had already done more than enough to stretch their unbeaten streak to 15 matches.

Son on target as South Korea beat Cameroon

Son Heung-min header earned South Korea victory

Son Heung-min’s first-half header earned South Korea victory over Cameroon in a friendly in Seoul on Tuesday. The 30-year-old nodded home a rebound in the 35th minute after Kim Jin-Su’s strike was parried by Indomitable Lions keeper Andre Onana.

The Central African nation, who fell 2-0 to Uzbekistan on Friday, have now suffered two defeats in their final warm-ups prior to naming their World Cup squad.

Coach Rigobert Song named a strong side against the Asians in the South Korean capital, but Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu’s ambitious long-range effort was just wide midway through the first half.

Exciting Hwang In-Beom and Kim Jin-Su both went close for Korea, before the latter broke free on the left to unleash a strike that was clawed away by Onana only to sit up nicely for Son’s powerful header.

Cameroon, who fielded Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo throughout, had missed chances through Olivier Ntcham, Martin Hongla, and Pierre Kunde, while Léandre Tawamba saw his stoppage-time effort saved.

The five-time African champions, who begin their World Cup campaign against Switzerland and are also grouped with Brazil and Serbia in Group G at the finals, will host Jamaica in a friendly in Yaounde on 9 November before leaving for Qatar, according to Song.

Ghana defeats 139th ranked Nicaragua in Spain

Black Stars team that faced Nicaragua

Ghana shrugged off last Friday’s defeat to Brazil to record a narrow victory over less fancied Nicaragua in a second friendly match on Tuesday evening. The Black Stars, despite a total dominance over the 139th ranked side, managed to put only one goal past them, to claim a 1-0 win at the Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco in Lorca, Spain.

Otto Addo made a couple of changes to the team that suffered the 3-0 loss to Brazil in France last Friday, with Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu and Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams getting their first starts.

Skipper Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew were made to start the game from the bench.

Richard Ofori was preferred in goal to Joseph Wollacott for the first time in a long time.

Germany-born forward Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer was brought in the second half to mark his debut after replacing the goal scorer Issahaku.

The Black Stars thoroughly dominated the entire first half of the match as the Nicaraguans failed to register an attempt on goal, which made Ofori have a free day.

Red Star Belgrade star Bukari came through with Ghana’s first attempt around the 18th minute after being put through beautifully by Gideon Mensah, but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Douglas Forvis.

Moments later, Mohammed Kudus had an opportunity to put Ghana ahead, but his effort after dribbling past about four defenders went wide.

Black Stars finally got the breakthrough in the 35th minute through youngster Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who scored his very first senior goal. Issahaku’s powerful curled shot from inside the box took a slight deflection to beat Forvis in goal for the Central Americans.

Kudus found the back of the net nine minutes after restart, but it didn’t count as it was ruled offside.

Williams came close to getting his first goal in Ghana shirt in the 71st minute after receiving a nice cross from Mensah, which he failed to connect.

Kudus had only the goalkeeper to beat to double the advantage for the Black Stars few minutes later, but he failed to get the ball at the back of the net, as Forvis made another save.

Ghana came close again in the 89th minute with substitute Antoine Semenyo’s shot from close range, which forced another save from Forvis.

Ghana play Switzerland in their last preparatory game in November, a week before their first match at the World Cup against Portugal.
